U.S. Defeats Russia, 3-2! The first round of the Davis Cup is finally complete at Stone Mountain, Georgia. Jim Courier defeated 18-year-old Marat Safin after being down 0-6, 0-2, and later two sets to one. Courier rallied to win the final two sets to send the United States to the quarterfinals to face Belgium. Courier outlasted the young Russian, 0-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. In the previous match, Andre Agassi saw his 16 match Davis Cup winning streak come to a crashing halt when he lost to Yevgeny Kafelnikov in 90 minutes, 6-3, 6-0, 7-6 (7-3).
