STRICTLY GENEALOGY (Page 5)

Isabella PHILLIPS-OSBORNE

My paternal grandmother, Isabella PHILLIPS-OSBORNE, can be first seen on the 1855 census of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands as follows: She is 1 year old, and was born in St. Thomas. Her mother, Eleanora ADAMS was also born in St. Thomas and was of the Moravian faith. Her father, "Rich" PHILLIPS, was born in Tortola, British West Indies. He is shown as a Ship's Carpenter, and a Episcopalian. Her brother Joseph PHILLIPS is 6 years old, and an Episcopalian. Her sister Jane PHILLIPS os 3 years old and a Moravian.

The next time we see Isabella is in the 1880 census of St. Thomas. She is with her husband Henry OSBORNE and their child Alfred Nathan OSBORNE (my father). Alfred is then 1 year old. Henry is a teacher who was born in St. Eustatius, the Netherlands Antilles in the Caribbean. He migrated to St. Thomas in 1872.

The next time that Isabella is seen is on a New York state census of 1905 of Manhattan. Isabella is enumerated with her son Alfred, who has assumed the name of Albert, and assumed the age of 16 when in reality he is 26. They, at that time, are listed as aliens. In 1910, Isabella is seen on the federal census of Manhattan. As before, she is enumerated with her son Alfred and his recently acquired bride Julia GLASS-OSBORNE. And this time, Alfred, at 31, has assumed the first name of Arthur and the age of 27.

In 1914, at the age of 61, Isabella dies from a stroke, and is buried in the 2nd Calvary cemetery in Queens, NY.
