Following the Sunnah and Avoiding the Bid'a

Sunnah is the social and legal usage set up by the Prophet "With clear Signs and Books (We sent the Messengers). And We have also sent down unto you (o Muhammed) the Reminder and the Advice (the Qur'an), that you may explain clearly to men what is sent down to them, and that they may give thought."

The Qur'an gives us commands and the Prophet "For he commands them what is just and forbids them what is evil; he allows them as lawful what is good (and pure) and prohibits them from what is bad (and impure). He releases them from their heavy burdens and from the yokes that are upon them. so it is those who believe in him (Muhammed), help him, and follow the Light which is sent down with him, it is they who will prosper."

So he acts as the society's law giver. The Prophet "O ye who believe! When the call is proclaimed to prayer on Friday (the day of Assembly), hasten earnestly to the Remembrance of Allah, and leave off business (and traffic): that is best for you if ye but knew!"

If we consider the Prophet "Ye have indeed in the Messenger of Allah an excellent example for him who hopes in Allah and the Final Day, and who remember Allah much."

And in Surat Al-Nisa':64,
"We sent not a Messenger, but to be obeyed, in accordance with the leave of Allah......."

Since we are encouraged in Islam to seek knowledge then it would be fair to say that putting that into action would also be advised. Some people will make the comment that "It's just the Sunnah." meaning it's not obligatory, but according to most of these verses, without "just" these Sunnah's we wouldn't be able to function properly. Allah "Say: "Obey Allah and His Messenger": but if they turn back, Allah loveth not those who reject faith."

Abu Hurairah(raa) relates that the Holy Prophet The significance of following the sunnah is the same as we apply to our lives, we follow certain rules to achieve certain goals. We study and listen to the teachers to get good grades, we follow company policies to get the promotions and so on. The Sunnah allows us to follow a very simple and outlined pattern to achieve our ultimate goal, Jennah (Paradise). Every act of Sunnah applied to our lives is like we are building a stronger foundation. It keeps us in remembrance of Allah [note]
There are three main classes of action:
1. Fard (Obligatory),no exceptions in this. Your prayers for example, zakat, fasting.
2. Wajib (Compulsory), these are sometimes mistaken for strong Sunnah but in fact is by itself. The witr prayer is wajib, for example, it should not be left without good reason.
3. Sunnah (tradition of the Prophet b. Hadith Nabawi, these are the sayings of the Prophet The Prophet He had deputies he would send out to teach not only hadith but the Qur'an as well---> This was considered the Verbal Method. All of the letters that he had sent to the kings and leaders, Muslim and non-Muslim. Many of these letters were filled with legal matters concerning tax, zakat, forms of worship and so on--->This was considered the Written Method. And of course the last was the Practical Method or demonstration. This would include all of his actions. he would answer many questions by telling the questioner to stay with him to observe what he does.

Recording the hadiths by the companions was performed in the same way it was taught, verbal memorization, written recordings, and practicing them. They used to learn the Qur'an and the hadith mostly when they attended the Masjid. When the Prophet For the companions of the Prophet After the Prophet's Some of the most heard of transmitters are, Abu Huraira, it is said that he transmitted around 1,236 of them. ibn Umar(son of Umar ibn Al-Khatab), Anas ibn Malik, and Aiyisha Ummul-Muminin.

The system of Isnad (transmitters) goes like this:
A Hadith quoted by Bukhari:
Bukhari said that Sulaiman Abu ar-Rabi' informed him saying that isma'il b. Jafar said that Nafi' b. Malik informed him on the authority of his father that Abu Huraira related that the Prophet(sAas) said: "The signs of the Hypocrite are three, Whenever he speaks he tells a lie. Whenever he makes a promise, he breaks it. Whenever trusted with something he proves to be dishonest.

The Prophet Muhammed "Muhammed is not the father of any of you men, but (he is) the Messenger of Allah, and the Seal of the Prophets, and Allah has full Knowledge of all things."

Our Faith dictates to us that we cannot accept some and reject others. So it is good for us to put into practice what we learn as much as we can and leave what was not left by Allah The word innovation means, the introduction of something new, a new idea, method or device. It should be understood that innovation to life in terms with automobiles, electricity, indoor plumbing, TV and so on, are not what we're discussing here. Bid'a means specifically innovating the religion. In Arabic the word 'ikhtira'a' is used for innovating (modern technology).

In most cases Bid'a came about in innocent way, by doing something 'extra' in our worship and not realizing that someone else may be following our act, and therefore propagating these Bid'as'. Sometimes we find ourselves doing something innovative to the religion and feel that because it 'inspires' us to be better or do more in our Faith, we continue and in turn pass it on. This is how Bid'a is spread. Allah "There is not an animal that lives on the earth, nor a being that flies on its wings, but (form part of) communities like you. Nothing have We omitted from the Book, and they (all) shall be gathered to their Lord in the end."

From this verse Allah "O ye who believe! Obey Allah, and obey the Messenger and those charged with authority among you. If ye differ in anything among yourselves, refer it to Allah and His Messenger, if ye do believe in Allah and the Last Day. That is best and most suitable for final determination."

Allah "Verily this is My Way leading straight. Follow it, follow not (other) paths. They will scatter you about from His Path: Thus does He command you, that ye may be righteous."

Each step we take outside this righteous Path laid by Allah Aisha(raa) relates that the Holy Prophet "If somebody tries to introduce into his Faith of ours (Islam) something which is not a part of it, it is to be rejected (and that person is condemned). [Bukhari & Muslim]

In conclusion, be careful with your worship. It is very easy for the Shayton to find a way in through our worship. By being careless and not checking the sources of information we can easily be led astray by him.
