Amazing Spider-Man #13 (454)
WRITER:  Howard Mackie & John Byrne
PENCILLER:  John Byrne
COVER BY:  John Byrne
INKER:  Al Milgrom
STORY TITLE: The End
REVIEW:
During the Final Chapter storyline, Peter made the fateful decision to retire his costumed alter ego once and for all. Peter now lives in a luxurious midtown Manhattan penthouse with his sickly Aunt May, thanks to the large income from his absent model wife, Mary Jane. He has just recently gotten himself a job at the Tri Corp Research Foundation.

In Amazing Spider-Man #2, after realizing that no one but him could stop the creature known as Shadrac (a.k.a. Greg Herd, a.k.a. Override), Peter made the fateful decision of reassuming the responsibility of being Spider-Man. This came after Mattie Franklin, who was granted the gift of power during the Gathering of Five ceremony, failed to perform as well as the real Spider-man when she adopted his identity when he decided to call it quits. Peter's wife, Mary Jane, who is away on photo shoots regularly doesn't know that Peter is still Spider-Man, although she is slowly starting to become suspicious.

In Amazing Spider-Man #9-10, Mary Jane, who is away on a photo shoot, is still receiving phone calls from an apparent stalker/obsessed fan. Upon receiving his latest call, she rushes back to New York.

In Amazing Spider-Man #11, Mary Jane is back in New York. But the stalker is hot on her trail. At the end of the issue, her limousine is stopped dead in its tracks by an explosion. When she gets out of the vehicle, there is a huge banner with a message from the stalker. At that same moment, Spider-Man drops in and takes her away. In Peter Parker Spider-Man #11, Mary Jane reveals to Peter that someone is stalking her and he reveals that he is Spider-Man once again. More information about the possible connection between Senator Ward and Arthur Stacy is revealed in that issue. The rest of the issue deals with the Eight Day crossover, which does not affect the continuity of the Amazing Spider-Man series.

In Amazing Spider-Man #12 and Peter Parker Spider-Man #12, the Sinister Six are reformed by the Sandman to take down Doctor Octopus and Senator Stewart Ward. The mastermind behind all of this is revealed to be the Wizard. At the end of PPSM #12, Senator Ward transforms into some sort of super-powered being; to what end, is not revealed. In that same issue, Mary Jane closely encounters her stalker when he ambushes her in a cab rigged with a bomb. Using mace, she blinds her stalker and leaps out of the car, which blows up, apparently killing its occupant. Spider-Man turns up but it is too late. Mary Jane is very angry at him.

ACT 1: While Spider-Man web-slings in the New York skies, Mary Jane gets her stuff ready to leave for another shoot. She is waiting for Peter to pick her up and drop her off at the airport. He, on the other hand, is too busy apprehending the culprits behind an armored truck heist and most likely forgot about MJ…again. Aunt May tries to convince MJ to wait for Peter and catch a later flight but MJ leaves anyways.

ACT 2: Robert Farell, a.k.a. the Rocket Racer has his hands tied up behind him. Troy, a man who befriended Robert for months, only to learn the secret location where Robert kept his Rocker Racer gear, has betrayed him. He puts the Racer costume on, knocks Robert out and leaves. At that moment elsewhere, Mary Jane jumps in a cab and makes her way towards the JFK airport.

ACT 3: Meanwhile, one block away, Spider-Man is on his way back to his apartment. When he arrives, Aunt May informs him that MJ is already gone to the airport. He cannot believe that he has mixed up the days once again, and he races out after her. At that exact moment, the new Rocket Racer is wreaking havoc in the streets of New York City. When he looks up, he sees Spider-Man web-slinging away. The crazy idea of fighting Spider-Man comes to mind and he pursues our hero.

ACT 4: While Mary Jane contemplates telling the cab driver to turn around and drive her back home, Spider-Man encounters common thugs trying to steal from a pedestrian. He jumps in and in a matter of seconds, the culprits are apprehended. At that moment elsewhere, the police bursts into the room where Robert Farell is tied up (after receiving a 911 call from Robert, who had to use his tongue to dial the numbers). He tells them that they have to stop Troy before he hurts himself.

ACT 5: Meanwhile, the evil Rocket Racer is hot on Spider-Man's trail, destroying everything in his path. Not far from there, a man is about to commit suicide by jumping off a building. A priest tries to convince the man to come down from the ledge when a sudden gust of wind makes the man fall off the ledge. Luckily for him, Spider-Man weaves a web in between the buildings and saves him from imminent death.

ACT 6: The Racer is still following Spider-Man, looking up occasionally to make sure not to lose him. However, he looks up one time too many and runs straight into a door. Thus ends the career of the evil Rocket Racer.

ACT 7: A short time later at the JFK International Airport, Peter does his best to try to catch up to Mary Jane but even his spider-like powers can't help him and he fails to catch up to her. The plane takes off. Aboard the aircraft, Mary Jane is sitting next to an old man who offers her a lollipop and says the following: "The flavor simply explodes in your mouth! Have one?" Although not mentioned in my previous reviews, the stalker always used to be shown sucking on a lollipop. Could this old man be the stalker in disguise or is this only a coincidence?

ACT 8: Some time later, Peter returns home and tells Aunt May that he was unable to catch up to Mary Jane. She asks him what he is going to do now. He replies that he is going to wait for her to call when she gets there and then he is going to find his wife.

ACT 9: The aircraft carrying Mary Jane is in trouble. A S.O.S. call is sent out. It explodes in mid-air.
