I started school at age 4 where I attended Eliston Nursery
School. From there I entered Wesley Hall Infants School and
then to the Junior School at age 8.
During the 4 year period at the school the only thing I was good at, besides school work, was music. Wesley Hall Boys School, I would say had the best music orchestra in the island and I was apart of it. Although music was my best talent I wanted to be good in sports, but no matter how hard I tried I always failed. I probably went through a dozen sports from football to cricket. At the end of junior school I took the 11+ Examination and was hoping to pass for Combermere School, but instead passed for Christ Church Foundation School.
I was really excited about going to my new school. One of the reasons being that it is co-ed since my primary school was all boys. I was determined not to be an ordinary student again like in primary school, so I tried to join the school's cricket team. When the coach told me I made the team I thought I was on the road to being somebody, but just made a fool of myself because I could not catch the flipping ball at all and that caused the school to lose a very important game.
On entering my 2nd year, I came to the conlusion that I was not good in sports and decided to concentrate on my school work more. Then my best friend introduced me to tennis. Suprisingly, I caught on to the sport fast and from there on I never looked back. I became the school captain in my first season and quickly reached national status. Tennis gave me satisfaction and I was able to focus on my school work. I decided I wanted to become an Accountant and tried to plan my life towards that goal. Life was going great with tennis, school and social life in total balance. This was reflected in my end of 3rd form examination results. I finished at the top of my class and opted to do Business in 4 form. But it turned out that my performance was to good for Business and was placed in a top Science class against my wishes.
During my 4th form year I felt out of place and depressed. I
felt dumb and like a ordinary student again. The year proved to be
a fight; a fight that I was losing and later lost. Luckily I had
my tennis to fall back on which gave me new confidence and
strength.
Losing the battle of 4th form meant that I would have to
repeat it, but this time I was going to do it my way. I chose
the subjects I wanted
to do and what class to go into. In the
year to come I returned to the top of the class and was cruising.
I finished the year with top marks, awards, and as treasurer of the
Students Council, and with an acting prefect's badge.
On entering my senior year I prepared myself for the hard
work to come. That meant fine tuning to my tennis and social
life. When the year started I was presented with the Headboy
badge. With this badge I realised I was the most senior
student in the entire school, only being matched by the Headgirl.
Now with the top prize acheived, it was time to focus on my
External Examinations. This year proved also to be a fight, but
this was one which I wasn't going to lose. I finished
secondary school with 6 subjects which will be
recognised by top terciary institutions, and a handsome resumé.
After thinking I was on a high, I went even higher when I was
awarded with an AFS Scholarship to Denmark.
My new school is called Aabenraa Gymnasiuman og HF. I took
a break from my Accounts and was selected to do Maths and Danish.
When I look back, I can see I have come a long way from being a nobody who could not catch a cricket ball to being a AFS Student in Europe. It makes you feel good inside.
