Orange County, Calif., - The heroism and patriotism displayed by Roy Benavides is a true inspiration to every Mexican American. Benavides proudly served his country, not as a minority, but as an American. An American who believed in his military oath to defend the principles of the Constitution of the United States. The passing of Roy Benavides is a somber moment in our history as Mexican Americans. Heroes such as Benavides are becoming fewer with the passage of time. Social ills such as racism, discrimination and prejudice continue to exist in our communities. Our children continue to be denied the truth about the Mexican American contributions to American history. Reflecting on this sad occassion, we should realize that hope still exists. Our children are our future. Although our role in society often seems limited, the barriers can be overcome. If not for ourselves, we should do it for our children. Mexican American heroes such as Roy Benavides are true role models and serve as an inspiration for our kids. Our contributions to society can be ignored, but they can not be denied.
