Like Eeyore, it's easy to be cast down now the excitement of Easter and Pentecost is past, and fall back into the same rut as before! But the greatness of celebrating Easter isn't so much to be seen in the wonderful events which immediately surrounded it, but in the lasting results which have followed after it and from it. The reality and the greatness of Easter is for us in the reality of the relationship between the Resurrection and our own lives. If we believe in Jesus' Resurrection as more than just a momentary triumph over the power of death, then, we wonder, "where is he?" and "what is he doing?"
He's returned to the Father from whom he came, he's ascended. He's there praying for us continuously. In addition to his ceaseless intercession for us he's also preparing a place for us. So, as believers in the Resurrection we must, in the wake of the Ascension and Pentecost, keep constantly before our minds the thought of the living Christ.
If we're asked, "What has the Saviour done? What is he doing for us on earth?" we can reply that he's founded his church. That's us, his body, he's our living head. It was about this that he was talking to the disciples during the forty days between his resurrection and ascension. He was speaking to them about things concerning the kingdom of God. To establish his kingdom he gave the invisible power of the Holy Spirit after his ascension. St Peter thought that this was the great end to which the resurrection led. We find Paul striving to know Christ and the power of his resurrection. So it should be for us, we shouldn't be satisfied with a mere intellectual assent to the evidence which convinces our minds, but year by year, as these events come around, we should ask ourselves if we are growing in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, and of the power of His resurrection, and of the results which follow from it. The Holy Spirit is continually poured out on the Church, on us, even today.
As I leave one home for another, I leave this thought with you. It was impossible to crush the message which Jesus came to live. It was impossible for death to conquer life. The message of Easter, and its subsequent events, is a message of God's triumph over all those things. Jesus lives. Jesus lives in us. Christ is risen! Alleluia! Continue to live in this hope and grow in His grace.
