Morihiro Saito Sensei - 9th Dan

Saito

Born: 31st March, 1928

Saito Sensei trained under O'Sensei for 23 years in Iwama. He was the head of the Iwama Dojo and keeper of the Aiki-jinja after O'Sensei passed away.

Saito Sensei was born in Iwama and he started out working on the railways. He met O'Sensei in July 1946, just after the war, when he was 18. The training was intensive and there were no mats but Saito Sensei's tenacity paid off as after a few years he was one of the main uchideschi students training under O'Sensei. Saito had a lot of time to train as he worked 24 hours on and 24 hours off for the railways. In his free time he also helped O'Sensei with chores and farm work but the training he received was second to none.

Saito became a top student and in O'Sensei's absence used to teach in Iwama and from 1961 taught regulary in the Hombu Dojo. Saito was also the only person permitted to teach Aiki Weapons besides O'Sensei there.

Saito Sensei's aim was to perserve the teachings of O'Sensei and not to change what he had been taught by the founder.
He discussed this many times during the numerous video recordings of him. Saito also wrote many books on aikido.

Saito Sensei travelled extensively passing on his knowledge of aikido until sadly his passing away in 2002.
