In The Dojo - The Kamiza:

the kamiza

The kamiza is located on the dojo's front wall, which is referred to as the "shomen". (Shomen means "front")

The kamiza is the "upper" or "divine seat" where the dojo deities are held to reside. It is the "chief seat" or "seat of honour" within the dojo. Interestingly, a bugeisha's religious beliefs are not consequential with respect to the kamiza. The kamiza is the spiritual core for the martial artist.

Several objects may be found with the kamizar, chief amongst these a Shinto shrine or Kamidana. There may be votary accoutrements, a tokonoma (alcove) with an offertory flower, possibly important scrolls of the school and perhaps a picture of the ryuso (school's founder). A picture of the school's founder should be placed here only if he is deceased. Living persons may have their photographic likeness displayed elsewhere in the dojo.
