British Aikido : Aikido in the UKHistory of Aikido in UK Aikido was brought to Britian by Sensei Kenshiro Abbe in 1955 who was a Japanese Judo master who had trained under O'Sensei for a number of years from around 1933. Senseis Ken Williams, Henry Ellis and Hayden Foster were the some of the first aikidoka to be taught by Sensei Kenshiro Abbe in the UK. Yamada Sensei was another top sensei who arrived in Britain around 1959. He was also a master of Judo who had learned aikido. John Waite (now 7th Dan) was Yamada Sensei's top student who learned Judo and Aikido from the Japanese teacher. There must be a number of Sensei who have trained in aikido in the UK but only a few who had top teachers. My aim one day is to get a list of all the instructors in the UK and about their lineage of aikido. So if you know or are a 5th Dan or above please let me know who you have trained under and I will be compiling a listing of UK Sensei.
