History of Aikido

Aikido is still a very young martial art as it was only started around 1942 but Aikido was being devoloped by the founder in the 1930's. It was only around 1942 when the name Aikido was first used.

Morihei Ueshiba created Aikido from other arts such as Daito Ryu Aiki Jutsu, Kenjutsu, Jojitsu plus more. The main difference being the emphasis of Budo philosophy! i.e. the intention behind a technique.

History Of Morihei Ueshiba

Morihei Ueshiba was born in Tanabe, Japan on December 14th 1883. He studied a few different martial arts one of which was Daito-ryu Aiki-jutsu which he studied under Sokaku Takeda (find out about the history of Aiki-Jutsu ). He had different influences throughout his life but his religious beliefs stemmed from Omoto-kyo which he learnt from Onisaburo Deguchi. He also followed the philosophy of Budo. These religious beliefs along with his immense understanding of technique combined to create Aikido.

Morihiro Saito Sensei and O'Sensei

Saito Sensei first started training under O'Sensei when he was 18, in 1946, he continued training under the founder for a further 23 years. Saito Sensei lived right next to the dojo on a plot of land given to him by O'Sensei, this meant he not only trained under O'Sensei but learnt a lot about his day to day living and his budo philosophy. When O'Sensei died in 1969 Saito Sensei became keeper of the Aiki-Shrine and Dojo-Cho of the Iwama Dojo.

History of Aikido in UK

Aikido was brought to Britian by Sensei Kenshiro Abbe, in 1955, who was a Japanese Judo master who had trained under O'Sensei for about 10 years from 1933. Find out more here.

Sensei's Ken Williams, Henry Ellis and Haydn Foster were some of the first aikidoka to be taught by Sensei Kenshiro Abbe in the UK. Yamada Sensei was another top sensei who arrived in Britain around 1959. He was also a master of Judo who had learned aikido. John Waite (now 7th Dan) was Yamada Senseis top student who learned Judo and Aikido from the Japanese teacher.
