AIKIDO, AIKIDO and more AIKIDOThis page is for everyone out there who is nuts about aikido and who are hungry for knowledge about aikido! This is a work in progress and I will be updating the page regulary, so if you have any questions on aikido please do send them in.
So what is aikido?O'Sensei said: aikido is the name given to our practice of the Way to attain oneness with the spirit and body of the Universe, and the Way of unification with the light of harmony. Aikido was founded by Morihei Ueshiba (O'Sensei). As O'Sensei reviewed and changed his intention behind aikido and the aikido technique the name changed the name Aikido was consolidated around 1942. It was orginally called Aiki jitsu, then Aiki Budo then Aikido. Between 1920 and 1940 Aikido or Aiki Budo did change a lot as O'Sensei was changing the techniques slightly in order to improve them and to conform with his budo! Aikido is a martial art which is purely non-aggressive. There should be no competition in aikido as this goes against the founder's teachings! Where does aikido come from?Aikido derives from martial arts such as jujitsu and kenjitsu and certain "secret" Japanese techniques. It is a relatively new martial art if you compare it with some other martial arts, but the techniques have been passed down for generations from the samurai period and before! Is aikido a martial art?Although Aikido is "defensive" or "non-aggressive" it is still a martial art as an ettiquette must be followed and when used in defence it can still be deadly! When Sensei's from different arts first saw aikido in Japan they thought it was not a proper martial art as it looked like dancing. There were occasions when these senseis would challenge O'Sensei and almost everyone who did ended up training under O'Sensei as they realised the power that aikido can muster! How long does it take to learn aikido? There are people who have been training for over 50 years and are still trying to improve their Aikido! It is possible to become a master in other martial arts a lot quicker than it is possible to do so in aikido. What does Aikido in everyday life mean?To take Aikido in everyday life basically means the way you approach other people in your life see harmony and how you deal with every situation that arises! O'Sensei also said it is a way of driving all evil out of the world. For Aikido FAQ's you can also see Aikido FAQ's |
