History of Aiki-Jujutsu

Minamoto no Yoshimitsu is accredited with the invention of Aiki-Jujutsu although some believe that the art goes back slightly further to Prince Teijun who lived from 850-880 A.D.

Minamoto no Yoshimitsu was born in 1036 and lived for 91 years until 1137. The Yoshimitsu family was well known for their military achievements. His father a general and his brother a leading commander.

Minamoto no Yoshimitsu studied techniques of the sword and spear and unarmed techniques and became a renowned warrior. The techniques that Minamoto no Yoshimitsu formed were passed on through the generations all the way to Sokaku Takeda in 1860.

History Of Takeda

Minamoto no Yoshimitsu's second son moved to the mountainous Kai region of Japan, and founded a new clan with the name Takeda. The Takeda family then ruled Kai throughout the period of unrest and war, still passing down the aiki-jujutsu techniques from generation to generation.

Sokaku Takeda was born in 1860 and learned the techniques of Aiki-Jujutsu, he became a renowned martial arts practitioner and taught the police. In 1915 the police in Hokkaido requested help from Takeda and it was during a demonstration at an inn that Morhei Ueshiba met Takeda and began to learn the techniques of Aiki-Jujutsu.

Aiki-Jujutsu and Aikido

Aiki-Jujutsu was born in a period of unrest, war and constant fighting and so the techniques were focused on the practical result, after the Second World War the founder of Aikido Morihei Ueshiba understood that there was no need for the techniques to destroy one's enemy and so created a means of peace and harmony focusing on the character and ethics of the practitioner.
