European Club Cup in Crete

The European Club Cup that takes place in Crete from September 27 till October 5 promises to be the strongest team event of the year and has further gained in importance thanks to the participation of Garry Kasparov. The world's number one represents Russian champion Ladya Kazan 1000, a team that also includes Dortmund winner Viktor Bologan. Their main rivals for the title seem to be Bosna Sarajevo (a.o. Shirov, Bareev and Sokolov), the NAO Chess Club (Grischuk, Svidler, Adams), Polonia Plus Warsaw (Ivanchuk, Gelfand), Norilsky Nikel (Dreev, Malakhov) and Tomsk (Morozevich, Khalifman). Luke McShane wins Young Masters

The fourth Lausanne Young Masters, a knockout event which was held from September 17 to 22 in Lausanne, Switzerland, was won by Luke McShane. The young British GM beat French Champion Etienne Bacrot in the final. We bring you all the results and games.


Bareev up and Leko down in FIDE October ratings

The big winners are Evgeny Bareev, who gained 18 points and jumped to place four, and Indian GM Krishnan Sasikiran, who gained 25 points rose from 40 to 24. Peter Leko dropped from rank 4 to 10. Some remarkable changes: Russian GM Evgeny Bareev has gained 18 points and climbed from rank 9 to 4. Alexei Shirov, who lives in Spain, is up from 7th to 5th, Alexender Morozevich from 23 to 16. The Indian grandmaster Krishnan Sasikiran has gained 25 points and risen from rank 40 to 24, Viktor Bologan gained 23 points (mainly at the Dortmund Super-GM) and rose from 42 to 27. British youngster Luke McShane gained 30 points to jump from 74 to 46. The most prominent loser is Peter Leko, who lost 17 points and dropped from rank 4 to rank 10.
