Russia and Chechnya

- The Russian Chechnyan conlflict goes back centries. It all began with religious and culture diferences between the Muslims who live in the boundaries of the Soviet Union and the Orthodox Jews and Christians of Russia.
- After the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991 many nations claimed their independence Chechnya was one of those nations so Russia picked Chechnya to make an example out of to the Muslim republic because they wanted to control the Caucasian oil trade. Russia sent mass amounts of troops to try and control the uprising in Chechnya but most were unsuccessful.
- They have signed various peace treaties since then but still continue to fight.
- Repeatedly, refugees have fled from Chechnya to surrounding countries. This irks the countries and causes tention between Russia and them. Russia believes that the other countries are harboring terrorists, when in fact, the terrorists are simply hiding deep within the other countries where they cannot be found. Some of the Chechyans that are classified as terrorists are really just people that spoke out. Being persecuted against takes no personal action.
- On the other hand, Russians have been attacked by some Chechyans, and the guerilla tactics of the Chechyan rebels are sometimes cruel and unusual. There are Chechyan suicide terrorists, but then again, there are Russian suicide attackers and biased, abusive soldiers as well.

There are ways that this conflict could be resolved, but the stubborness of both sides and the religious and political factors in place make consensus difficult to come to.
