Bird habitats and cage

Bird hidebox

Containers suitable for a medium sized bird hidebox are old ice cream containers or similar objects.

If there are no food containers available any container that is used for the hide must be scrubbed and disinfected.
Hide boxes can double as a nesting area for some species of birds.

Heating and cooling of the birds will be required for a bird cage. It is difficult to maintain the correct temperatures within the birds habitat and some form of heating and cooling is often needed.

If a method of relocating the birds home is available then placing the habitat in an area that obtains winter sun is ideal for warming birds naturally.
Do the reverse for summer and place the birds home in a shaded area that is exposed to any cool breeze.

A fan that is specially designed to cool birds is available Here
The fan for birds can be mounted or used free standing and is weather proof.

Heating for your birds that are kept in cages on cold days can be supplied with a pet heater. The pet heaters for birds on this web site are ideal for keeping birds warm in cold weather.

Keeping bird habitats cool

If your bird habitat is an old aquarium or has large areas of glass then some of these surfaces must be painted over if exposed directly to the sun.

The heat from the sun can build up the inside temperature of the hide box or habitat through glass.
A good solution for large areas of glass is to paint the glass area that is most exposed to the sun.
A white wash or the same water based paint that is used for the inside walls of a house can be used.

The glass should be painted on the outside of the birds home and given adequate time to dry before placing the bird into its new home. Two days will be the minimum time required before all the paint fumes have evaporated. Do not use full sided metal containers as a cheap source of bird habitat.

Bird habitat

Water is an important part of your birds habitat.
In addition to drinking some birds like to periodically soak in water to bath.

Water containers with smooth high sides should not be used in your bird habitat. Your pet will use the container to soak in and may find it difficult to remove itself from smooth containers with high sides.
The water must be kept clean from any food residue and feces. An old breakfast bowl is an ideal water container for a small to medium sized bird.
