Only the good die young: JUAN CARLOS RUGE
He moved to the U.S. from Colombia with his band POPO and became
a staple at Kimo's on Polk Street. Wearing matching Mariachi shirts
and setting their drums afire at gigs helped set them apart from the hordes.
Tragically, in May, at age 23 Juan fell ill and within a month was
dead from the same virulent strain of cancer that claimed Joey Ramone.
POPO had been at work on demos at San Francisco's Lennon Studios.
Surviving members soldier on in a few new local groups.
