The Day Out

“Katie! Wake up!” Lora yelled from the other side of the door. “Why? I’m on vacation. Let me sleep.” Katie said sleepily. “Get up! You have to go get Emily and Jordan.” She yelled. “Ugh! Fine.” Katie said opening the door. “Aren’t you going you get ready?” Lora asked. “Yes, I am just going to get some breakfast.” Katie said. “Don’t get smart with me, young lady.” Lora said to Katie who was walking down the stairs to her house. “You know you love me.” Katie said as she walked into the kitchen. She was eating a bagel when the phone rang. “Katie! It’s for you.” Lora yelled down stairs. “Hello?” Katie asked. “Katie?” a guy asked. “Yeah?” Katie asked not recognizing the voice. “Hey, it’s Nick.” He said. “Hey. What’s up?” She asked. “Nothing really.” “Can I ask you something?” She asked. “Sure anything.” Nick said. “What is your last name?” she asked. “Carter.” Nick said hesitated. “Do you know who I am now?” He asked. “Yeah, I found out last night.” Katie said. “My cousin is a huge fan of yours.” She explained. “That’s cool. So I take it that your not.” He said. “Umm, no sorry.” She said. “It’s ok. Do you wanna meet up somewhere today?” He asked. “Umm…sure, but my two little cousins are will be with us. I’m watching them today.” She told him. “That’s ok. How old are they?” He asked. “7 and 8.” She replied. “Cool. Where do you want to meet?” Nick asked. “Well, I still have to clean up, and get Emily and Jordan, so I’m going to be a couple hours.” She told him. “Well, I’m ready to go now, so I could meet you somewhere down there.” He said. “Ok, by the time you get here it will be around time for lunch. So do you know where the Burger King on 41 is by the movie theater?” She asked. “Yep. The Wal-Mart is right behind it right?” “Yeah. Ok so what time do you think you can be there?” she asked. “Around 1.” He said. “Ok, we’ll be there.” She said, “Oh what will you be wearing, you know, so I don’t have to call out your name.” She said. “At white t-shirt, and North Carolina basketball shorts.” He said. “You’re a UNC fan?” Katie asked. “Yeah why?” Nick asked. “Because everyone knows that Duke is the best.” “Nah, you know you love UNC.” He said with a smile forming on his face. “No. Lets see who lost the ACC by 26 points?” Katie asked joking around with him. “That’s what I thought.” Katie said when she got nothing but silence from Nick. “ANYWAYS. I’ll come up to you.” Nick said. “Ok. I’ll see you soon then.” She said. “Ok bye.” Then they hung up. Katie ran upstairs to Becky’s room. “Becky!” Katie yelled when she got in her room. “What?” She asked putting on her make-up. “It was Nick Carter. I told you.” Katie said. “Quit messing with me.” Becky said. “No, I am serious. I’m going out with him today, with Emily and Jordan.” Katie said. “No way. You’re dating a Backstreet Boy!” Becky yelled. “He isn’t just a Backstreet Boys. He is a great guy, and we aren’t dating.” Katie said. “Whatever you better tell me everything when I get back from work.” Becky said grabbing her pens. “I will. Don’t worry.” Katie said. She walked into her bathroom, got ready and soon left to go pick up Emily and Jordan.

*~*~*

“Katie, I’m hungry.” Jordan complained. “We are going out to Burger King now. And we are going to be meeting a friend too.” Katie said pulling out of the neighborhood. It was ten minutes till one and Katie knew she was going to be late. She sped as much as she could and was surprised when she got there in five minutes. She drove around the parking lot and saw Nick’s black truck. She parked and the three of them went inside. “Hey.” Nick said coming over to her. “Hey.” She replied. “These are my cousins, Emily and Jordan.” Katie said. “Hi.” Nick said. “Hi.” They both said. “You guys ready to eat? Because I am starving.” Nick said to them. “Yeah!” They both yelled and ran to the line. “They’re cute.” Nick said. “Yeah.” Katie said and then they walked into line. Nick ended up buying but not after arguing with Katie about it first. They sat in a near by booth. Jordan and Nick were sitting next to each other with Katie and Emily across from them. “You know what?” Katie asked looking at Nick after he took off his hat and then to Emily. “You two have the same color hair.” Katie observed. “Yeah so do you and Jordan.” Nick said rubbing Jordan’s buzzed head. “Katie would like me if I had my hair like this?” He asked referring to Jordan’s haircut. “Yeah it would be a good look on you.” Katie said sarcastically. “Sorry, but those haircuts only look good on certain kinds of people.” Katie said. “Yeah maybe you are right.” Nick said running his hand through his own hair. “Plus I like your hair the way it is.” Katie said. “Thanks.” Nick said in a half smile, which made Katie want to melt. “I like your smile Nick.” Emily said shyly in a cute little voice. “Thanks.” Nick said winking at her. She smiled back at him and then took a bite out of her hamburger. “So what are you guys doing after this?” Nick asked. “Nothing.” Katie said. “Well then why don’t we go to the mall?” Nick suggested. “Sounds good to me. What about you two?” Katie asked Emily and Jordan. “I want to!” Emily yelled. “Me too!” Jordan said. “Ok, sure.” Katie said. “So do you want to take one car?” Nick asked. “Sure, and then I can bring you back here when you are ready to leave.” Katie said. “Ok, well I am ready to go when you are.” Nick said. They all finished eating and walked out the door. “Nick, can you give me a piggy-back ride?” Emily asked. “Sure, jump-on.” Nick said bending down. Emily got on and then Nick stood up. “Wow, you are tall.” She said. “Yeah. I know.” Nick said laughing. Then they walked to Katie’s car and left for the mall.

*~*~*

“I think we wore them out.” Nick said looking back at Emily and Jordan, who were asleep. “Yeah.” Katie said letting out a little giggle. “They are great. I want kids like that.” Nick said turning back around. “Yeah me too.” Katie said. “I have an idea. Why don’t you and I go the beach after we drop them off.” Nick said. “Ok, we’ll be just in time for sun set.” Katie said. They got to George and Jerilyn’s house, dropped off the kids and then left for the beach. “What beach are we at?” Nick asked when Katie parked the car. “Barefoot.” She said. “I have never been to this one.” Nick said. “Oh I love this one, hardly any shells, the sand is nice and smooth. I love it.” “Wow, I’ve never met someone who loves the beach as much as me.” Nick said. “Yeah same here.” Katie said. They walked up the beach silently watching the sun-slowing sink into the water. When it was nearly down, they sat on some near by rocks, and watched the best part of the sunset. “How long are you going to stay?” Nick whispered in her ear. “Three months for sure, maybe longer.” She said also whispering. “I want you to stay as long as you can.” He said still whispering. Katie just sat there watching the sunset. She soon got a chill from the soft breeze that was coming off the water. Nick noticed that she got cold and moved closer to her and rubbed her bare shoulders. Katie rested her head on his shoulder and enjoyed just being close to him. She knew that she felt something for him, but growing up she was taught to never tell a guy how she feels, until he made the first move first. “I could stay like this forever.” Katie said closing her eyes. “Yeah me to.” Nick said. “Nick, why don’t you have a girlfriend? You are such a great guy.” Katie said still leaning on his shoulder with her eyes closed. “Well I have my eyes on someone, but I have to leave for tour soon, so I don’t want to start something, if I have to leave and hurt her.” Katie looked at Nick confused for a second then turned to Nick with a confused look on her face. Katie then realized that he was talking about her. She put her head back on his shoulder and decided to play along. “So who is this girl, Mr. Carter?” Katie asked. “Oh some girl from out of state that I just met.” He said. “And do you like her a lot?” Katie asked smiling widely. “Very much so. She is practically everything I want in a girl.” He said. Katie laughed and looked up at him, she smiled and put her head back on his shoulder and they watched the sunset. When the sun was completely gone, the waves started to crash against the rocks harder. “I want to go swimming.” Nick said “But its cold.” Katie said. “So.” Nick said getting up, taking off his shirt and running into the water. Katie was still sitting on the rocks alone watching Nick. He got out of the water and walked over to her. “Are you going to come in?” He asked. “No, it’s to cold.” She said. Nick waked up behind her. When Katie realized what he was going to do it was to late. She tried to run but he engulfed her in a hug getting the front of her wet. “Nick, I don’t believe you just did that.” She said. “Well then you aren’t going to believe what I am about to do.” Nick said and picked her up. “Nick, you wouldn’t.” She said clinging her arms around his neck. “Yeah I would.” Nick said smiling. “Please don’t, Nick.” Katie pleaded as he walked off the rocks and towards the water. Nick just smiled more and then walked towards the water. “1, 2, 3.” He counted off while swinging Katie towards the water. “Nick! No!” She yelled. Nick tried to throw her in but she held on to his neck. “Fine, if you won’t let go, I’ll take you.” He said walking out further into the water. Before Katie knew it her entire body was under water except for her head. She let go of his neck and splashed water on his face playfully. “Hey.” Nick said wiping his face, when he looked up he expected to see Katie’s smiling face, but she wasn’t there. “Katie?” He called out. He looked around but got no answer. He began to worry. She had been gone for a while and he knew that she couldn’t hold her breath that long. “Come on, Katie this isn’t funny anymore.” Nick yelled. “I think it is, Mr. Carter.” He heard a voice say. He spun around to see Katie sitting on the rocks in the same position she was before he took her off. “How did you get there?” He asked. “I am a fast swimmer.” She said. “But, I am really cold so when you are ready to go I am to.” She said rubbing her shoulders. Nick laughed, “You are really cute.” He said. “I know.” Katie said. “Come on, I don’t want you to get sick.” Nick said walking out of the water. “Are you sure?” “Yeah, I can go swimming anytime at home.” Nick said reassuring her. They walked out to Katie’s car and drove off. “Do you want to eat dinner with us?” Katie asked. “What are you having?” He asked. “Umm…I don’t know, hold on. Tell me when it is green.” She said pulling out her phone. “Hey.” Katie said when she heard her aunt answer the phone. “Hey, where are you? Carmine is coming over and I want you to meet him.” Lora said talking about her boyfriend. “Well I was wondering if I could have a friend over for dinner.” She said. “Green.” Nick said. “Yeah, that’s fine.” Lora said. “What are we having?” “Cheese pizza.” “Nick, do you like cheese pizza?” she asked. “Oh yeah.” He said. “Do you want to come over? We can swim in her pool.” Katie said. “Sure, but can I go to my car first?” He asked. “Sure.” She said. “Lora, we are going to get something out of his car, then we will be over.” She said to her aunt. “Ok talk to you later.” She said then hung up. They went to Nick’s car so he could get a change of cloths and his swim shorts. They got to Katie’s house and went to her door. “I just want you to know that my cousin is a huge fan of yours and will probably go crazy in you face.” Katie warned him. “I’m used to it.” He said. “Ok.” Katie said and unlocked the door. “Hello? Anyone home?” Katie yelled. “Yeah, we’re out on the patio.” Lora yelled. They walked out to the porch to find everyone including Emily, Jordan, George, and Jerilyn sitting there. “Nick!” Emily and Jordan yelled and ran out of the pool to Nick and he gave them a hug. “Everyone, this is Nick. Nick, this is my aunt Lora, my cousin Becky, and you know my aunt and uncle George and Jerilyn.” Katie introduced. “Nice to meet you all.” Nick said politely. “Hello.” Everyone said. “Oh, sorry I am being rude, Carmine this is my niece and her friend Katie, Nick, Katie, this is my boyfriend Carmine.” Lora also introduced. They all greeted each other. “Nick, you look familiar, have I seen you somewhere before.” Lora asked. “HE’S A BACKSTREET BOY!” Becky exclaimed and ran towards him and gave him a tight hug. “Oh My God, I don’t believe that you are in my house, and you are friend with my cousin.” Becky exclaimed still hugging him tight. “Becky, give him room to breath.” Katie said pulling her off of him. “It’s nice to meet you.” Nick said straitening him shirt. Becky just shook her head going back into her state of shock. “Nick, come swimming with us!” Emily said. Nick looked at Katie. “Umm, sure can I talk to Katie first?” He asked them. “Ok, “ Emily said an ran into the pool. “We’ll be right back.” Katie said and walked into the house. “What did you want to talk about?” Katie asked. Nick looked at the sliding glass door and noticed everyone looking at them. “Umm, can we talk in private?” He asked. “Sure, umm, my room?” She asked. “Ok.” He said. Katie pointed up the stairs. He headed off in that direction while Katie turned around and gave everyone a dirty look. Then followed Nick upstairs. “Ok now what did you want to talk about?” Katie asked going to her drawers and pulling out her swimsuit. “Why is everyone looking at me? I mean, yeah I am famous but why are they all looking at me like that?” Nick asked. Katie let out a little giggle and then answered him. “They have never met someone famous like that before, and I am sure they all think that I am dating you so they want to know my boyfriend.” Katie said. “Don’t worry about it, just ignore them.” She added. “Ok, umm, where should I change?” He asked. “You can go in my bathroom, and I will change out here, and I will tell you when I am done, so you don’t walk out on me.” Katie said. “Ok.” Nick said and walked into the bathroom, which was connected, to her bedroom. Katie quickly changed into her one piece and then put a pair of sweatpants over. She told Nick she was ready and then they both walked down stairs. They saw everyone sitting around a table except for Emily and Jordan. Nick took off his shirt and walked into the pool followed by Katie. A few hours later it was midnight, Emily and Jordan were asleep in Becky’s bedroom, Becky went to a friends house, and Lora went to Tallahassee for a meeting that she had the following day. Nick and Katie were still in the pool. Katie was sitting on the steps just watching Nick swimming around. “Are you tired?” Nick asked. “Not really.” She answered. “You want to watch a movie? I heard that ‘Coyote Ugly’ is on.” Katie said. “Ok.” Nick said. They both dried off and walked into the house. They walked up to Katie’s room. Katie went into the bathroom and changed. “I’ll be right back.” She told Nick and walked into the bathroom, changed and was back out again. “You ready?” Nick asked stilling on her bed in a tee shirt and a pair of black sweatpants. “Yep.” They both walked down stairs and sat on the couch and watched ‘Coyote Ugly.’

*~*~*

The next morning Nick woke up not knowing where he was. He looked around and saw the TV was still on, then he realized he was still in Katie’s house. Then her noticed her curled up with her head on his chest. He sat there for a minute when Katie started to stir. “Morning.” Katie said looking up at Nick. “Morning.” He said. She lifted her head off of his chest and stretched. She hit the remote control accidentally, changing the channel. “With these pictures everyone is asking themselves, is Nick Carter from the Backstreet Boys, secretly married and have kids?” Kurt Loder said as the opening statement to MTV news.
