The next month went by really quick for Nick and Katie. They worked on the song most of the time, but still made some personal time for each other. Nick was leaving that night and really didn't want to go. He had what seemed like a normal life, and as much as he loved singing he also loved the peace and quiet and being away from the public eye for a while. But he knew that he had to. “So what time are you leaving?” Katie asked Nick as she was driving home from Emily's. “The guys are coming to get me at 3 in the morning.” Nick said packing some more cloths in his large duffle bag. “So do you think that you will be able to come and say good-bye to me?” he asked. “Well I have to ask my aunt but I am pretty sure that she will say yes.” Katie said. “When are you going to ask her?” He asked. “When I get home.” She answered. “Where are you now?” “On my way home. I went out shopping with Emily and we stopped by her coach's house so I could give her a copy of the CD. And then I just dropped off Em.” Katie explained. “Oh, hey I have another call, call me later.” He said. “I will. I love you.” She said. “Love you too.” He said then switched lines while Katie hung up.
“Why can't I go?” Katie yelled in frustration. “Because an 18 year old doesn't need to be out at 2 in the morning just to say good-bye to her boyfriend.” Lora yelled back. For the past hour and a half, Katie and Lora had been yelling at each other about Katie going to say good-bye to Nick. “I'll be fine. If you want I will stay on the phone with you the whole time. Just let me go!” Katie pleaded. “No!” Lora yelled once again. Then they both heard a honk. “Your not going. End of story.” Lora said then left the house. Katie was practically in tears, but not crying. She walked downstairs and called Nick. “Hello?” Nick asked. “Hi.” Katie said. “Hey hun. When are you coming over?” He asked. “I'm not.” She said sadly. “Why not?” He asked. “My aunt won't let me. She said I am around you to much and that three is to late for me to be out.” Katie said. “I really want you to come.” He said sadly. “I want to come.” Katie said. “Let me talk to her.” Nick said. “You can't.” Katie said. “Why not?” He asked. “She went on a date with Carmine.” Katie said. “Then I guess this will be the last time we talk before I leave.” Nick said sadly. “Yeah.” Katie said softly. Then there was a silence. They were both very upset that Katie couldn't come. “I am so sorry, Nick.” Katie said. “It's ok. It isn't your fault.” He said. “Katie I love you but I got to go. I'll call you the first chance I get.” Nick said. “You better, I love you too.” Katie said then they hung up. Katie sat around the rest of the day doing nothing but think of Nick. Her aunt came home at 11:30 and went straight to bed. Katie knew she would be out for the rest of the night. Becky wasn't feeling good so she was already asleep. Then she got an idea, which would be flawless.
Katie had been driving for two hours when she reached her destination. She put her car in park and got out. It was two in the morning. She was at Nick's house. She snuck out of the house to go see him, and put a note on Becky's bed if anything happened. She walked up to his front door and rang the doorbell, and soon heard someone coming to the door. “You guys are earl…Katie!” He exclaimed pulling her into a tight hug. “What are you doing here?” He asked. “I snuck out. I had to see you.” She said. “I am so glad you did.” Nick said kissing her. “I love you so much.” She said with tears rolling down her cheeks. “I love you too.” He said wiping her tears away. “I know this is selfish but I don't want you to go. I want you to stay here with me.” Katie said now crying. “Shhh…It's ok.” He said pulling her in for another hug. “Come on.” He said and walked her in to his house and over to the couch and just held her. “I don't want to go either, but I have to.” He said still hugging her. “But I can promise your something.” He told her. “What's that?” She asked looking at him. “I am coming to Emily's performance.” He said. “You are?” She exclaimed. “Yeah. All of us. We don't have a concert that day or the following day.” Nick explained. “That's great!” She said hugging him. “Don't tell Emily but I am coming just to see you.” Nick said. Katie smiled and leaned on his chest. “I'm going to miss you so much.” Katie said with silent tears falling. “I know. I'm going to miss you too. But it will go by fast I promise.” He said. “And if you think about it we will still see each other. I'll be gone for a couple weeks, and then I am coming back here for two days, for Emily's performance. Then a month after that I'll be coming to the airport to say good-bye to you, and when the tour is over, I will come and spend as much time as I can with you at IU.” He said. “I forgot all about leaving.” Katie said. “Well as of right now I'm not leaving.” She said. “Have you called your mom?” He asked. “Yeah a week ago.” She replied. “And he's still there?” Nick asked. “Yeah. He even answered the phone.” Katie said. “What did you say to her?” He asked. “Nothing. Told her about the music thing, me going to meet your family, and you leaving.” Katie said. “Did she say anything about your dad?” He asked. “Nope. I asked her why he is with her, and she said because she loves him. I don't understand how, but she does.” Katie said. “But I told her that I never wanted to talk to him or see him.” She explained. “Well, maybe you will just be stuck here living with me.” Nick said smiling. “That wouldn't be half bad.” Katie said. “No it wouldn't.” Nick said leaning in and giving her a kiss. When they parted Katie snuggled with Nick. “I could stay like this forever.” She said. “Me to.” Nick said holding her closer. They sat there in silence for a few minutes when Nick's phone rang. “Hello?” Nick asked. “Is Katie there?” a woman asked softly. “Becky?” He asked. “No, it's Pam.” She said. “Katie, it's your mom. She sounds bad.” Nick said handing her the phone. “Mom? What's wrong?” Katie asked worried. “Come and help me.” Her mother said in a soft scared voice. “What happened?” she asked. “He hit, kicked, and tried to make me do drugs again.” She whispered. “Where is he now?” Katie asked scared for her mother safety. “He's passed out on the bed.” She said softly. “Ok sneak out and go to Jessie's. He won't find you there. I'll be there as soon as I can.” Katie said. “I'll call Jessie and tell her you are coming.” She added. “Ok, I love you.” Pam said. “I love you too, mom.” Katie said then hung up. She quickly picked the phone back up. “Hello?” Cheryl, Jessie's mom, said sleepily. “Cheryl, my mom is coming over.” Katie said bluntly. “Katie? What's wrong? Aren't you in Florida?” Cheryl asked. Katie told her the story, and at the same told Nick since he was listening closely. He was furious. He wanted to hurt Katie's father so much. Katie hung up with Cheryl and looked at Nick and started crying. “Shhh…She's going to be fine.” He said hugging her. He looked at the clock and saw that it was almost 3:00. He knew that if she got a flight they would be able to drop her off at the airport. “Come on, lets get you a flight home.” He said and walked over to get the phone book. He called ATA and they had a plane leaving to Indianapolis at 3:45. Right when he hung up he heard a knock at the door. He ran to the door and told the guys what had happened. They quickly put Nick's things on the bus and then left.
“You ok?” Nick asked Katie as they waited for Katie's flight to leave. She nodded her head yes. She hadn't said much since they left Nick's house, but she hadn't cried at all. Nick never left her side, making sure she was ok. “ATA Flight 863 to Indianapolis is now boarding.” A woman said over the intercom. “That's you.” Nick said. All six of them got up and walked to the terminal. “Tell your mom we hope she's ok.” Brian said. Katie nodded. “Call us if anything happens.” AJ said. “I will.” Katie said. “Come on guys lets give them some privacy.” Howie said. “We love you, and be careful.” Kevin said. The four guys said good-bye and walked away. “Will you call me when you get there?” Nick asked. Katie nodded looking down. “Are you sure you're ok?” Nick asked lifting her chin up. He saw her crying and pulled her into a hug. “Everything will be fine.” He reassured her. “Go home, get your mom, call the cops, then bring her back here.” He told her. “I love you. You know that right?” She asked. “Of course I do, and you know I love you.” He said. The he pulled her in for a kiss. They kissed for a few minutes when Katie pulled away. “I love you. See you in a couple weeks.” Katie said. “Yeah, I'll be there.” He said. “I want you to call me when you get your mom too.” He said. “I will. And will you call me when ever you have a chance?” she asked. “Of course.” He said. He handed her, her ticket. “I love you.” He said. “I love you too.” She said and pulled him in for a quick kiss and long hug. She gave him the tightest hug they shared together not knowing if she would be coming back from her visit home. She pulled away. “Why are you saying good-bye? Isn't it supposed to be the other way, me watching you leave?” Katie asked with a small laugh, but tears still rolling down her cheeks. “This isn't good-bye, its…I'll see you in a couple weeks.” He said smiling. “Ok. I'll see you in a couple weeks.” Katie said. She pulled him in for a quick hug, then parted. Katie turned around and gave the lady her ticket. She looked at Nick, and he smiled and waved bye. She did the same with fresh tears falling. She took her ticket stub and then walked on the plane to her seat.
Three hours later Katie was driving down the familiar streets of her best friend's neighborhood. She was speeding as much as she could. When she got to Jessie's house, she jumped out of the car before it was in park. She ran to the front door and ran the doorbell many times. Jessie came to the door and showed Katie to the living room, where Katie saw her mother sitting at the kitchen table with Cheryl cleaning up the cuts on her face. “Katie!” Pam said. “Mom, are you ok?” Katie asked walking over to and giving her a hug gently. “Yeah. The police got him. Cheryl called him after she hung up with you.” Pam said. “Good. Now he won't hurt either of us.” Katie said. “The police said they are going to file a restraining order for both of you.” Cheryl said. “So we don't have to worry about him again.” Katie said now very happy. “Did you take her to the hospital?” Katie asked. “No.” Jessie answered. “I think we should take her there just to get checked out.” Katie said. “You don't look so good.” She added. “Ok.” Pam agreed. Katie helped her mom in the car and told Cheryl and Jessie to go get some sleep. Katie took her mother to the hospital and told the doctors what happened. Pam was in getting some tests done when Katie called Nick. “Hello?” Nick answered fully awake. “Hey. I figured you'd be asleep.” Katie said. “Nope, I waited for you to call.” He said. “You didn't need to wait up all night for me.” Katie said. “I know but I was worried. How is she?” He asked. “Ok I guess. When I got to Jessie's they were cleaning her up but I told her I wanted her to go to the hospital to make sure. She's getting some tests done now.” She explained. “Are you going to be there all night?” He asked. “Yeah, until they say she can go.” Katie said. “What about your dad?” He asked. “He has a restraining order from us, and he is in jail.” Katie said. “That's great! Now he can't hurt you.” Nick said. “Yep.” Katie said. “So are you bringing your mom to Florida with you?” Nick asked. “I don't know I'll let her decide.” Katie said. “I doubt she will want to though. She likes it here.” Katie said. “Will you stay with her?” Nick asked. “I don't know. Depends on if she needs me here to help her or not. But I have to come back to teach the girls the dance.” Katie said. “Miss McElroy?” A man asked Katie. “Nick, I got to go.” Katie told him. “Ok, I love you. Tell you mom I said hi, and I hope she gets better.” “Ok I will. Love you too. Bye.” Kate said then hung up. “Yes?” Katie asked. “Your mothers fine. Your father injected a drug that she had a bad reaction to and that's why she feels so sick. Take her home and then make sure she gets in bed and have a trashcan close by.” He told her. “I'll sign your mother out.” He said then left. Katie got her mother. They soon left the hospital.
