It’s Over

A WEEK LATER
Liz’s point of view

I was flipping through my journal trying to see if I missed anything the other hundred times that I read it. After looking through it one more time I set it down on the bed and sighed frustratingly. I was still no closer to remembering my life than I was a week ago.
I heard Nick yell out my name from downstairs so I went to see what he wanted.
“Liz!” yelled Nick.
“Okay, you can stop yelling, I’m right here,” I said coming into the laundry room.
“Oh sorry,” said Nick laughing. “Can you help me with something?” he asked.
“Sure what?” I asked.
“Well,” said Nick holding up a shirt. “I washed this, and for some strange reason it shrunk,” he said grinning.
I took the shirt from his hands and saw that it was about four sizes too small for him. I started laughing when I looked at the instructions for washing the shirt. “Nick, did you wash it in warm water?” I asked.
Nick looked confused for a second. “No, I washed it in hot water,” he replied.
I started laughing even harder. “It says that you’re supposed to wash it in cold water!” I exclaimed.
“Oh, is that why it shrunk?” asked Nick uncertainly.
“Of course,” I responded. “Haven’t you ever done your own laundry?” I asked.
“Well, a few times, but it usually worked out fine, nothing ever shrank before,” answered Nick shrugging.
“Come on, I’ll help you sort out this stuff as in what goes in hot water, what goes in warm water, and what goes in cold water,” I said beginning to look at the tags on Nick’s clothing.
He smiled gratefully and began doing the same.

Nick’s point of view

As Liz was helping me sort through my laundry, I was dying inside. It had been a week since she lost her memory and still there was no sign of recovery. She was right there with me and yet I couldn’t hold her, I couldn’t kiss her, I couldn’t touch her at all. I missed her more than I thought possible and having her in the house with me was pure torture because she was there, but yet she wasn’t.
“There, that should do it,” announced Liz after the clothing was sorted. “Please don’t ever come near my laundry,” she added laughing.
I laughed too. “Believe me, I won’t,” I stated and put the first load into the machine. As I was about to put in the detergent, the doorbell rang. “Can you get that?” I asked Liz. She nodded and went to get the door.

Liz’s point of view

I opened the door and saw a policeman standing there. He was very tall and largely built. “Can I help you?” I asked.
He looked confused for a second. “Yeah, I came to finish what I started,” he said and his face expression turned cold.
A shiver of fear ran through me but I had no idea why. “Excuse me?” I asked slowly backing away from the door.
“Hey Liz, who’s at the…” started to say Nick but as soon as he looked at the policeman he became very pale. “Liz, RUN!” he yelled and didn’t wait for a response. He grabbed my hand and began running towards the backyard.
“Nick! What are you doing?” I yelled.
“No time to explain, we have to get out of here!” yelled Nick and fumbled with the lock on the doors to the backyard. He got them open, we ran out, and Nick locked the door behind us.

Nick’s point of view

I took out my cell phone and dialed Officer Smith’s number. “He’s here!” I exclaimed into the phone as soon as Officer Smith picked up.
“Nick?” he asked confusingly. “Who’s here?”
“The kidnapper, he’s inside the house!” I yelled. “He’s wearing a police officer’s uniform,” I explained a little more calmly.
“Oh my God, are you and Liz still inside the house?” asked Officer Smith.
“No, we’re in the backyard heading for my car,” I replied.
“Good, get as far away from the house as you can. There’s a police car that has been patrolling near your house, but apparently no one noticed anything unusual. We’re on our way,” said Officer Smith and hung up.
By then Liz and me had reached the end of the backyard.
“Nick, what are you doing, all I see are hedges!” exclaimed Liz as she saw me reach into the hedge and push it apart.
“There’s a gate back here that no one knows about, it’s part of the security system and is protected by it,” I replied as I found the gate and punched in the code to open it. It opened and Liz and me ran out to my Durango. I started the car and backed out as quickly as possible.
“Where are we going?” asked Liz worriedly looking at me.
“We’re going to Kevin’s,” I replied.
“Why?” she asked.
“Because his house is the furthest from mine, and we need to get as far away from my house as possible,” I responded and turned onto the street that would take us to Kevin’s house.
“I still don’t get it, what’s going on?” asked Liz.
“I’ll tell you everything when we get to Kevin’s,” I said tensely. I then picked up the phone and dialed Brian’s number. “Rok, get over to Kevin’s fast,” I said as soon as I heard Brian pick up.
He didn’t question me, didn’t ask what happened. “Okay, I’ll be there in five. You want me to call the other guys?” he asked.
“Yes, please do,” I said and hung up.
A few minutes later I parked the car in Kevin’s driveway and Liz and me quickly went inside.
“Are two okay?” asked Kevin as soon as he saw us.
“Yeah, we’re okay, this time we got away,” I replied and sat down and tried to calm down.
“Will someone please tell me what this is all about?” exclaimed Liz in frustration.
“Okay, well you see Liz, a couple of weeks ago, you were kidnapped,” began Kevin and Liz drew in a sharp breath. “We were all in Germany at the time and didn’t know what happened until Nick came home two days after you were taken. There was a ransom demand and Nick agreed to pay it and went to meet your kidnapper at the designated place. But when he got there and the kidnapper got his money, he told Nick where to find Liz but went with him while he went to get you. Right before Nick got to you, the kidnapper took out his gun with every intention of shooting you, but Nick heard the gun and ran to save you. He stopped the bullet from hitting you, but unfortunately got shot himself. Both of you were taken to the hospital because you were in pretty bad shape too. You weren’t the first victims of that kidnapper but you were the first ones to survive. Right before you lost your memory, you and Nick got a note that said that the kidnapper will finish what he started,” ended Kevin. I looked over at Liz and saw that she was very pale.
“Wow,” she managed to say. “It sounds so unreal, like a bad dream,” she added.
“Yeah, a nightmare,” I said looking at her. “That was the kidnapper in that policeman’s uniform, that’s why I had to get us out of the house as fast as I could,” I explained.
At that moment, the rest of the guys arrived and I relayed to them everything that had happened. A few minutes after, Officer Smith and Officer Tyner came to Kevin’s house.
“It’s over, we caught him,” announced Officer Tyner and we all cheered. I couldn’t believe it; it was finally over. No more police officers near my house, no more being afraid to come out of my own house, nothing! I was overcome with joy, as was everyone else.
“Is it okay if I go rest a little?” asked Liz getting up. “I need to take this all in and frankly, it has exhausted me,” she said.
“Of course,” said Kevin. “Come on, I’ll show you to the room that you stayed in before,” he said and he and Liz went upstairs.

Liz’s point of view

I woke up and looked around. Yeah, I was still at Kevin’s. I got out of bed and went downstairs. There I saw all the guys sitting and talking in the living room.
“Hey, did you have a nice rest?” asked AJ when he saw me.
“Of course,” I replied. “What are you all doing here?” I asked confused.
“What do you mean?” asked Howie.
“Isn’t Nick supposed to be hiding out at Brian’s while I’m here?” I questioned. The guys all looked at me weirdly. What was up with them?
“Liz,” said Nick carefully and got up from the couch and walked over to me. “This might sound like a stupid question to you, but what happened on the first day that you arrived here?” he asked.
He was right, that was a stupid question. Why would he ask me something like that? Oh well. “Like duh, I came here and we both hated each other and barely spoke to one another. Did you misplace your brain or something?” I asked. All of a sudden Nick’s smile got so wide I thought his face would break.
“YOU’RE OKAY!” he yelled and picked me up and spun me around. “Guys, she got her memory back!” he yelled to everyone else and they all bombarded me with hugs also.
“Is everybody nuts?” I asked squirming out of the guys’ arms.
“Liz, don’t you remember?” asked Kevin.
“Remember what?” I asked.
“Okay, what’s the last thing that you remember?” asked AJ.
“Well, I had a really bad headache and I felt sick, so I went to lie down and fell asleep. Now I woke up and went downstairs and all of you are acting really weird,” I replied.
“Liz, you did wake up after you went to lay down, but that was a week ago,” said Brian softly.
“WHAT??” I yelled. “What do you mean it was a WEEK ago?”
“When you woke up, you went downstairs to find me, but you fainted and hit your head in the process. You got amnesia and couldn’t remember anything, or anyone,” explained Kevin.
“Are you serious?” I asked in disbelief. All the guys nodded. “I missed a whole week of my life?”
“Yeah, so what you don’t know is that a few hours ago the kidnapper came back to our house, you didn’t recognize him cause you had no memory of the kidnapping, but I did and we ran to Kevin’s right away. Afterwards, Officer Smith and Officer Tyner stopped by to tell us that they caught him and that it’s over,” said Nick smiling.
“It’s really over?” I asked full of hope.
“Yes it is, we finally get our lives back,” he confirmed.
“That’s wonderful!” I exclaimed and ran into his arms. “So how out of it was I?” I asked turning to the other guys.
“Very out of it. You didn’t remember us, or anything about your life,” replied Brian.
“Wow,” I said shaking my head. “Remind me never to do that again,” I said grinning as I planted a kiss on Nick’s lips.
“You have no idea how much I missed that,” he said after we parted.
“Well then let me make it up to you,” I said smiling as I kissed him once again.
“Mmm, that was good,” said Nick after the kiss ended.
“Definitely,” I agreed.
“Hey you two, you’re not the only ones in this room you know,” reminded AJ jokingly.
“Really? I could’ve sworn we were,” said Nick grinning. Then he turned to me. “Come on, let’s go home,” he said.
“Gladly,” I said and both him and me walked out of Kevin’s house with Nick’s arm around my waist.

THE NEXT MORNING
Nick’s point of view

I woke up and realized that I wasn’t in my bed. I looked around and saw that I was in the living room and that Liz was still asleep in my arms. I remembered that we fell asleep watching a late movie the night before. I smiled as I watched Liz sleep peacefully. A few minutes later she stirred, then opened her eyes and looked at me.
“Morning,” she said smiling.
“Morning,” I said and kissed her.
“Now that’s a good way to wake up,” remarked Liz after the kiss.
“I know,” I said grinning and kissed her again.
“So what do we do today?” she asked.
“How about nothing?” I suggested. “We just stay home and spend the day with each other cause we really need that,” I added.
“I love the way your mind works,” said Liz smiling and scooted even closer to me.
I wrapped my arms around her tightly. “I love you,” I said.
“I love you too,” said Liz and we sealed those words with a kiss.
Later that day, Liz and me were hanging out by the pool.
“Nick, I just thought of something,” said Liz turning to face me in her lounge chair.
“What is it?” I asked lowering my sunglasses.
“Well, it’s the middle of August already, I have to leave in like ten days,” she said with a gloomy expression.
“Oh my God, you’re right!” I exclaimed. I hadn’t even thought of that!
“What are we gonna do?” she asked getting up and sitting down next to me on my lounge chair.
“I don’t know, but I don’t want to lose you,” I said holding her close to me.
“I don’t want to lose you either, but I have to go back to college in the end of August,” she said sadly.
“And I have a three and a half month tour beginning in the end of August,” I said remembering about the tour. I completely forgot about it.
“So where does that leave us?” asked Liz looking into my eyes, searching for an answer.
“I truly don’t know,” I replied.
