The Past Can Come Back To Haunt You

Liz’s point of view

I looked at Nick, uncertain of what to do next. “So what now?” I asked.
“I have no idea,” he said shaking his head. He looked over at the table. “Hot chocolate?” he asked.
I nodded. “Sounds great.” We both went over and Nick poured some hot chocolate into the two cups that were on the table.
“So where does this leave us?” asked Nick taking a sip.
“I’m not sure,” I said thoughtfully. “I mean, I know that I love you,” I said softly.
“I know that I love you too,” responded Nick. “But,” he said.
“There’s always a but.” I sighed.
“Yeah, but, this is too weird, and way too soon. You just broke up with Brad, Kelly just broke up with me, I guess, so how about we give us a little time before we become an official us?” he asked.
I was too shocked to say anything. Those were the last words I had expected to come out of his mouth. “I um, uh, okay, if that’s what you think is best,” I managed to utter.
“I do,” said Nick and got up. “Let’s go inside, it’s cold out here,” he said and started walking towards the house.
I got up. “You know what, I think I’m just gonna go home, I’m tired,” I said, faking a yawn.
“Oh, okay, so I’ll see you on the set tomorrow?” he asked.
“Actually, I have the day off,” I replied.
“Oh, I’ll see you later then,” he said.
“Yeah, later,” I mumbled and walked out of his backyard and onto the street. I couldn’t believe what had happened.
I got home and opened and closed the door quietly hoping that Lana wouldn’t hear me. I didn’t succeed.
“So?” she asked excitedly running up to me. “What happened?”
“You knew about this too?” I asked wearily.
“Of course, so tell me!” she demanded.
“Nothing happened, Nick wants to ‘give us a little time before we become an official us’,” I said trying to mimic Nick’s voice.
“Oh, but why?” asked Lana.
“I don’t know,” I replied shaking my head. “I’m gonna go to sleep, night,” I said and began walking up to my room.
“Liz, are you okay?” called out Lana after me.
“Oh sure, I’m great, what’s being rejected by two guys in one week? Absolutely nothing,” I responded and closed the door to my room. Once in there, I let the tears, which I had been holding back, flow from my eyes.

Nick’s point of view

I went back inside my house and immediately saw Kelly and Brian sitting there with huge grins on their faces waiting for me to tell them what happened.
“So?” asked Kelly expectedly.
“So what?” I asked.
“What did you and Liz decide upon?” asked Brian.
“We decided to give ourselves a little time before we become a couple again,” I replied.
“WHAT?” exclaimed Kelly and Brian.
“Whose idea was this?” asked Brian.
“Mine,” I replied.
“You are completely, absolutely, one hundred percent out of your mind,” he told me.
“I am not,” I retorted.
“Yes you are Nick,” said Kelly. “Why would you do a stupid thing like that?” she asked.
“Because we really do need more time,” I replied shrugging.
“More time for what? You two are completely head over heels in love with each other!” exclaimed Brian.
“I hope you realize what a huge mistake you just made,” said Kelly with a serious expression.
“I didn’t make any mistakes,” I said.
“Yes you did, you just pushed Liz away, maybe forever,” said Brian coldly.
“I didn’t push her away, she agreed with me when I said that we needed more time,” I told them.
“She lied,” said Brian simply.
“And how would you know that?” I asked him.
“Because I know her, and there’s no way that she would have that opinion,” he replied.
“I think you’re wrong,” I said.
“No, you’re the one who’s wrong Nick,” said Kelly.
“Exactly, now if you excuse me, I’m going to go over to Liz’s and see how much damage you did,” said Brian getting up from the couch.
“I didn’t do any damage!” I called out after him.
“We’ll see,” said Brian and left.
“I didn’t do anything,” I said stubbornly turning to face Kelly.
“Yeah you did Nick, and deep down in the bottom of your heart, you know you did,” she said softly.

Liz’s point of view

I was sitting next to the window and looking at the snow falling down. It had just started and the snowflakes were gently floating in the air covering everything in white. I was thinking about Nick and trying to figure out why he said what he said. I had no clue. I really thought that he wanted to be with me, but I guess I was wrong. A knock on the door interrupted my thoughts. I quickly wiped away my tears.
“Come in,” I said. My door opened and I saw Brian.
“Hey, you wanna talk?” he asked coming in.
I sighed and nodded. “I’m guessing you know about what Nick did,” I said sitting down on my bed.
Brian sat down next to me. “Yeah, he told Kelly and me about it when we asked,” he said. “But if you ask me, I think Nick is acting like a total idiot,” he added.
“I don’t know, maybe he’s right,” I said exhaling loudly.
“No Liz, don’t say that,” said Brian looking at me.
“Why not? Nick seems to believe it,” I retorted.
“But he’s not gonna believe it for long. Deep down inside he knows that he wants to be with you forever, I think he’s just scared,” said Brian softly.
“Of what?” I asked.
“Of feeling all these things for you,” replied Brian. “I don’t think he ever loved someone as much as he loves you, and that scares him,” he added.
“But I’m scared too!” I said frustratingly.
“What are you scared of?” asked Brian gently.
“Of losing him,” I replied as more tears began to fall from my eyes.
“Liz you are not going to lose him,” said Brian determinedly as he wrapped me in a hug. “I’m going to make sure of that,” he added.
“I hope you’re right,” I said sniffling.

Nick’s point of view

I was sitting in the kitchen and finishing my cup of hot chocolate when I heard Kelly behind me.
“Nick, we gotta talk,” she said sitting down on a chair next to me.
“About what?” I asked turning to face her.
“Liz,” she said.
I sighed. “I already told you everything, there’s nothing more to talk about,” I said.
“Yes there is, why are you trying to push her away?” she asked.
“I’m not trying to do anything,” I said stubbornly.
“Yes you are, I just don’t understand why,” said Kelly.
“I love her, I really do,” I said softly.
“So what’s up with the whole ‘we need more time’ business?” asked Kelly.
“I’m afraid of getting hurt,” I confessed.
“By Liz?” asked Kelly. “But she would never hurt you,” she said shaking her head.
“I know that she wouldn’t, but I don’t know just how strong her feelings are for me,” I said. “If I tell her exactly how I feel, she might not feel the same and then I would scare her away, that leads to pain, I don’t want that,” I explained.
“Nick, listen to me,” said Kelly looking straight into my eyes. “Liz loves you more than anything or anyone in this entire world, her feelings for you are just as strong as your feelings for her. I know that it will work out between you two as soon as you let it,” she said gently.
“I just need more time to think about this that’s all,” I said.
“Okay, just don’t take too much time,” said Kelly softly.

THE NEXT DAY
ON THE SET OF ‘FATE’

I looked around the set and then realized that it was Liz’s day off and that she wouldn’t be there. I sighed with disappointment and went to wardrobe. I was very tired, I was up basically the entire night thinking about Liz and coming up with nothing. Brian had called me the previous day and told me that I had hurt Liz. I did exactly what I was afraid of being done to me, I hurt the person I loved the most in the world, without even realizing it. Yep, it was definitely true; I was a total moron.
“Hey Nick,” said Tanya interrupting my self-pity moment.
“Oh hey Tanya,” I replied halfheartedly.
“What’s up?” she asked.
“Nothing, just going to wardrobe, what about you?” I asked.
“Same, where’s Liz today?” asked Tanya.
“She has the day off,” I said and turned the corner towards the wardrobe trailer.
“Oh, I thought she would be here with you,” said Tanya.
I looked at her weirdly. “Why would she?” I asked.
“Well, isn’t she your girlfriend?” she asked.
“No, she isn’t,” I replied and immediately felt a pang in my heart.
“So you’re single?” asked Tanya smiling.
“I’m not sure,” I said. Was she trying to flirt with me, or was she flirting with me? I couldn’t tell; my mind was too busy thinking about Liz.
“How can you be not sure?”
“It’s a long story, I’d rather not talk about it now.”
“Oh, well, do you want to get something to eat after we wrap today?” asked Tanya.
“I can’t, I’m sorry Tanya,” I said hastily. “I gotta go,” I said and quickly ducked into the wardrobe trailer. She was a nice girl and everything, I just couldn’t go out with her, I would feel like I was cheating on Liz even though we weren’t going out.

Liz’s point of view

“And we’ll be right back with our number one video,” announced Carson on TRL. I sighed and clicked the ‘mute’ button. Watching TV was pointless; I didn’t even know why I was doing it. Nothing took my mind off of Nick, no matter how hard I tried to keep myself busy that day, nothing worked. Cleaning my room made me think of the time I helped him clean his. Going to McDonald’s to get some lunch made me think of all the Mickey D wrappers Nick had all over his house.
I looked over at the TV and saw that the commercials had ended and Carson was about to play the number one video. I turned the sound back on.
“…are the Backstreet Boys with ‘More Than That’,” finished Carson and seconds later Nick’s face filled the screen. I turned the TV off. At that moment the doorbell rang. I was glad for the interruption until I opened the door.
“Brad,” I said, my expression immediately turning cold.
“Hey Liz,” he said cheerfully. What was he so happy about?
“Go away,” I said and started to slam the door in his face.
“I don’t think so,” he said and put his hand on the door to stop me.
“What do you want?” I asked not moving away from the door so that he at least couldn’t come in.
“I want us to get back together,” he said with an expression so serious I burst out laughing.
“Good one,” I said in between laughs.
“I’m serious,” he said not laughing.
“You’re dreaming if you think that I’m going to get back together with you,” I told him.
“If you don’t, I’m going to tell Nick and everyone else about your little secret,” threatened Brad.
I gasped. “You wouldn’t dare,” I said shakily.
“Try me,” he said with a haunting smile.
“No one will believe you,” I said.
“Oh they’ll believe me, I have proof,” he said menacingly.
“You can’t have any proof, you and my mom are the only people who know about it,” I retorted.
“Oh but I do, and if you try anything, you’ll see exactly the kind of proof that I have,” said Brad. My mind raced at a million thoughts per minute. I couldn’t let Nick or anyone else find out what had happened.
I gave up. “Fine Brad, you win,” I said and knew that my life was gonna be horrible from that day on.

Nick’s point of view

I finally made a decision while coming home from work that day. I was going to tell Liz how I felt and I was going to try and do my best to have everything work out between us. I pulled into the driveway and walked into my house. The first thing I saw were boxes, all over the place, all shapes and sizes.
“Kelly?” I called out.
“Yeah, I’m in here!” she shouted, she sounded like she was in her room. I carefully stepped over the boxes trying not to trip and break my neck, and slowly made my way over to her room.
“What is going on?” I asked looking at her.
“I’m packing,” she replied. “Can you hand me that sweater?” she asked gesturing towards the sweater that was on the chair next to me. I gave her the sweater and looked around her room. It looked worse than mine after I didn’t clean it for six months.
“You know, you could take your time packing,” I said grinning.
“Yeah, I know, but I just really want to see my family and everyone else, my flight leaves tonight at 9,” she said throwing the sweater along with a few other pieces of clothing into a suitcase.
“Nine?” I asked in disbelief. “There’s no way that you’ll be packed by then,” I said shaking my head.
“I’ll be done, the stuff that’s in the living room is the stuff that I already packed, I’m almost done with my room too, so there’s really nothing left,” she responded.
“No way,” I repeated.
“Yes way, not are you gonna stand there and stare, or are you gonna help me?” she asked looking at me.
“I’ll help,” I said laughing and joined her.

LATER THAT NIGHT

I waved bye to Kelly who was about to board her flight. She grinned and waved back. She really was happy about going home, and I was happy for her. As soon as I saw her go into the plane and I knew she was fine, I turned around and walked out of the airport. I was gonna stop by Liz’s house and tell her exactly how I felt.
The drive home seemed fairly short and before I knew it, I was parking my car in the driveway of my house. I got out of the car and walked over to Liz’s. I knocked on the door and waited for her to answer. The door opened and I saw Liz, but what I saw after almost knocked me off of my feet. It was Brad, and he was sitting on the sofa looking pretty comfortable.
“What’s going on?” I asked as soon as I saw Liz.
“Uh, Nick,” said Liz. She looked surprised to see me. “Brad and I are back together,” she told me and all thoughts just flew out of my head.
“WHAT?” I yelled. “AFTER WHAT HE DID TO YOU?”
“Nick, don’t scream,” said Liz quietly.
“How can I not???” I exclaimed.
“He apologized for what he did and said that he’ll never do it again,” said Liz.
“That’s the oldest trick in the book!” I yelled. “I can’t believe you fell for it!”
“I didn’t fall for anything, Brad is truly sorry and I believe him when he says that he’ll never do it again,” stated Liz. But there was something wrong. There was something in her eyes that made me doubt that what she was saying was actually the truth.
“Liz, did he do something to you?” I asked softly.
“He didn’t do anything except apologize and beg for forgiveness,” replied Liz. “And since you feel that we shouldn’t be together right now, I thought that I should give him another chance,” she added.
“No,” I said shaking my head. “Something is not right, and I’m going to find out exactly what it is.” I then turned around and walked away.
