Chapter Three

JC showed Lexi to the room that she would be staying in for the next week. It was very quaint and was decorated with a light blue floral theme. It had a television, a queen-size bed, and its window over looked the backyard.

“Omigawd, this is such pretty room! Who decorated it?”

“My mom did. She loves doing stuff like that,” JC answered.

“I can see why. She’s great at it.”

“Haha, well be sure to tell her that. Ok, the bathroom is down the hall on the left, there are towels in the linen closet right next to the bathroom, and…that’s about it.”

“Great. So where are your brother and sister?”

“Heather isn’t flying in until Christmas Eve, and Tyler is probably at baseball practice.”

“Oh, he plays baseball?” Lexi thought of Matt for a nanosecond and then dismissed it.

“Yup. Lucky number 21. Wait, he could be practicing with his band.”

“Following in his older brother’s footsteps, huh?” Lexi asked as she lifted her biggest piece of luggage onto the bed and began to open it.

“Yeah. His band’s called Justy. They’re good.”

“I’m sure they are.”

An uncomfortable silence filled the room. Lexi started unpacking and JC just stood there watching. Neither of them knew what the other was thinking about, and no one wanted to ask. Little did they know, they were both thinking about the same exact thing…each other. In the midst of this short silence, there was a knock on the already opened door. It was Roy.

“Hey, kids, lunch is ready to be served,” he said with a wide grin.

“Thanks, Dad. Ya coming, Lex?”

“Yeah, just gimme a minute to plug in my phone. I’ll be right down.”

“Well hurry up!” Roy joked. “We want to get to know you better!”

Lexi laughed. “Ok, I’m hurrying!”

Roy left the room and went downstairs. JC was about to follow him, but before he left he had to add, “Lexi? I’m really glad that you came here with me. We’re gonna have fun.”

“Oh I know we are. You wouldn’t have it any other way,” she responded with a smile.

JC gave her a quick wink and went off downstairs.

As Lexi walked down the stairs the smell of and food greeted her. She followed the noise and it led her to a beautifully set table equipped with place settings and an arrangement of flowers. Lexi joined the three that were already seated.

They said grace and began to eat. They talked about their flight, Florida, but mostly they talked about Lexi. Roy and Karen continued to ask her non-intrusive questions about her life and other subjects. In most cases Lexi would feel annoyed, but this time she felt totally at ease.

“So, Lexi,” Karen said taking the last bite of her sandwich, “When can we expect to hear a single from your album on the radio?”

“Hmmm,” Lexi thought for a moment, “I would say about the beginning of February.”

“Wow, you must be excited,” Roy added.

“Oh, I am! All I’ve ever wanted to do is sing, and I’m finally doing it, but I’m not going to get my hopes up until I see how my first single does.”

“I wouldn’t worry about that, Lex. I think you’re a sure thing,” JC said.

Roy and Karen smiled at each other.

“I think I’ll have to agree with my son on that one. Granted I’ve never heard you sing, but Josh has a knack for things like this. If he says you’re gonna make it big, there’s no doubt about it,” Roy said.

“Hey! Why don’t you sing for us, Lexi?” Karen asked. “I’d love to hear you.”

“Ok, what would you like to hear?”

“Why don’t you and Josh sing that song you wrote together. I’d love to hear it,” Karen said.

He really does tell his parents everything, Lexi thought. “Oh, well I’m afraid that I don’t know it very well on my own. I’d need the sheet music in front of me to sing it.”

“Well then it’s a good thing that I brought it with me,” said JC. “Never go out of town without your music. Ya never know when you’ll get an idea.”

“This is true. I should’ve known that you would bring it.”

“Great,” voiced Roy. “To the piano!”
