At about 7 o’clock Lexi pulled up to Matt’s apartment. Instead of using her key as usual, she knocked on the door. After 15 seconds a weary Matt finally answered it.
“Hi.”
“Hey, come on in. Your stuff is in that bag over there. Why didn’t you use your key?”
“Things are different now. I just didn't think that it would be appropriate. Here,” Lexi said handing Matt his key.
“Thanks,” Matt said accepting it slowly. Lexi walked over to the Abercrombie & Fitch bag resting on the counter and looked into it.
“That’s where my UCF sweatshirt is! I’ve been looking for it!”
“Yeah, well I thought you might be,” Matt said forcing a smile.
“Look, Matt, I’m really sorry that things ended kinda badly, but as corny as this sounds…I’d still like to remain friends.”
“Sure,” Matt said weakly.
“Well, I better get going. Good luck on your game.”
Lexi picked up the A&F bag and started walking towards the door.
“Wait! Umm…would you like some wine? I just opened a bottle of red,” Matt said suddenly.
“No, I need to get going…”
“Ok, but lemme ask you something first.”
Lexi let out a deep breath and walked back towards Matt.
“Yes?”
Matt reached into his back pocket and pulled out a small, black velvet box. He dropped down to one knee and opened the box to reveal a diamond ring. Lexi’s eyes widened in shock.
“Look, I know we’ve had some rough times, but through all of this I never doubted my love for you. And no matter what you say, I know you still love me too. So, Alexis Morrow, would you do me the honor of becoming my wife?”
Lexi stared down at Matt with wide eyes and was yet again speechless. After about a minute of silence Matt spoke.
“Should I take your silence as a yes?”
“Matt, I can’t marry you.”
“What do you mean you can’t…why not?”
“Matt, I’m not in love with you anymore. I’m sorry, but you can’t marry someone you don’t love. I’ve gotta go.”
Lexi turned around to walk to the door. Halfway there she saw the bottle of red wine hit the wall about 5 feet away from her head. She turned around to see a fuming Matt standing there. She began to run towards the door, and went to open it, but Matt was too fast. He quickly shut the door shut and slammed Lexi against it hitting her head on the door in the process. She winced in pain and her hand immediately shot to the back of her head. Matt took a firm grasp on her shoulders as tears welled up in her eyes.
“God damn you, Lexi! I gave you everything! And this is how you repay me? You’re the only girl I’ve ever really loved, and you think you can just say ‘I’m sorry I don’t love you anymore’ and walk out? It’s not that easy, Lexi! Do you think I invited you over here to get some shampoo, a sweatshirt, and some of your other shit!?”
“Let go of me!” Lexi screamed as loudly as she could.
“I don’t think so! You’re not leaving here until you realize that we were meant to be! We are meant to be, Lexi!”
Matt forced a kiss on Lexi, as she squealed in pain and anger. Without thinking twice she bit his lip with all her might. In return, Matt slapped Lexi across the face with his right hand.
“Owww!!! You bitch!” Matt yelled.
Lexi’s hand went to her face as she almost collapsed onto the floor. She couldn’t believe this was happening. As violent as Matt’s temper appeared to be he had never raised a hand to her…let alone hit her. She blinked a few times to clear her vision, and then she centered all of her energy into her knee and hurtled it into Matt’s groin area.
“Ahhhh!!!!’
As Matt doubled over in pain, Lexi kneed him again, but this time in the face. He flew back and fell onto the floor with a thump and began groaning and mumbling in pain. Lexi fumbled with the door, but finally threw it open. With A&F bag still in hand, she ran to her car. She only looked back when she heard her name being yelled by a rage and pain filled Matt propping himself up in the door frame.
“Lexi!!! Where the fuck do you think you’re going?! Get back here, you bitch! Oww…God damn you, Lexi! Lexi…!”
After what seemed to be hours, she finally reached her car. She quickly got in and started the engine. As she backed up, she could see Matt coming closer and closer. He was now only about 10 yards away. Thank God a sports car can beat out a person in speed. As Lexi sped away, she saw Matt’s figure in her rear view mirror.
Lexi tried relentlessly to wipe away her tears, but they wouldn’t stop flowing. She wanted to go home, but Matt might show up there. She didn’t know where else to go…wait. Yes she did.
