The next afternoon, Lexi came home from the mall with Nicole and Jennifer at about 6pm. Both Jen’s and Nicki’s classes were over by three, so Lexi took that advantage to spend some time with her friends that weren’t going to be her roommates much longer. After talking with them for about 25 minutes Lexi glanced at her watch and realized that she had to be at Josh’s house in half an hour. She excused herself and went upstairs. She had just enough time to put on dark blue jeans, a white tank top, and a black leather jacket when her phone rang.
“Hello?”
“Hey, Lexi. It’s JC.”
“Hey, Josh! Calling to tell me that you don’t want me to come anymore?”
“No, actually I’m calling to make sure you have directions.”
“Oh,” Lexi felt slightly stupid. “Yeah, I have directions. I’ll be there in a few, ok?”
“Ok. Oh by the way, I’m ordering Chinese food. What do you like?”
Chinese food? A meal? Does this make it a date…No, Lexi thought. I’m just letting Nicki get to me.
“Ummm, anything chicken,” Lexi responded.
“You’re too easy,” JC laughed. “I’ll see ya in a bit. Bye.”
“Bye.”
Lexi was about to leave her room a few minutes later when her phone rang again. Assuming it was JC she answered.
“Ok, you can order anything you want, but just make sure there’s some rice.”
“Hey.”
It wasn’t the person she expected. She almost gasped when she heard Matt’s voice. She almost didn’t know what to say, but eventually found her voice.
“Hey…how are you?” Lexi said uncomfortably.
“Ok. Who’d you think I was?”
“Just one of my girlfriends,” Lexi lied.
“I see. Well, I’m just calling to tell you that I have some of your stuff over here, and I think you should come and pick it up.”
“Umm, ok. I’ll stop by tomorrow afternoon…”
Matt cut Lexi off quickly yet nicely. “Actually, I’m going out of town for a game in about an hour, and I’m not sure when I’m going to be back. It would be better if you picked it up now.”
“Ok…” Lexi hesitated. “I’ll be there in about 10 minutes.”
“Ok, bye.”
