Chapter Three

That night Lexi laid in bed thinking about her encounter with Josh. He was so attractive, nice…not to mention he had an amazing voice (you really didn't think that she had never heard him sing before, did you?), but in the middle for her thoughts Matt popped into her head. "What am I thinking?" she thought. "I’ve been going out with Matt for amost a year, and I love him. Wait, there’s nothing to worry about. I just met a new friend, and that’s all.

Matt Evans was virtually the image of perfection. He was a minor league baseball player who was bound to signed to a major league team in the next draft. He stood 6’1” and had dark brown hair and green eyes, and was also very BUILT AND MUSCULAR. Lexi met him at the University of Central Florida when she was a freshman and he was a senior, and had been with him ever since. Lexi’s sophomore year was supposed to start at the end of the month. However she’s not sure how her record is going to affect that, but that a debate she’s dealt with by itself.

As Lexi began to drift off to sleep her phone rang. Thank God each of them had their own phone line. People had a tendency of calling anytime they wanted.

“Hello?” Lexi answered sleepily.

“Hey, sweetie. How’s it going?”

How’d she know the voice at the other end of the phone would be Matt?

“Tired.”

“Awww…pobre cita. Did I wake you up?” Matt asked sarcastically.

“Not quite. How was your game? Did you win?”

“Of course! Seven to four, and I made two of the hits thank you very much!”

Lexi giggled sleepily, “That’s my guy!”

“Well, I’m gonna let you go back to sleep. I just wanted to call and say that I love you and miss you.”

“I love you too. What time will you be back tommorrow?”

“Around noon.”

“Ok, I’ll see ya tommorrow after my recording session. Bye.”

“Bye, sweetie.”

Lexi was in the studio by 10am. Richard, Josh, and some other producers were there along with the regulars.

Lexi was in the sound booth by 11:30, and she heard Richard’s voice.

“Ok, Lex, we’re going to pick up ‘Slight Obsession’ from the second verse so you can hear how we changed it around a little.”

“Sounds good,” Lexi responded.

Lexi got accustomed to the change very quickly and eventually recorded the entire song. By 1 o’clock the song was a wrap, and Lexi took off her earphones and went into the studio.

“So,” Richard asked bluntly. “Have you made a decision about school yet?”

“Actually yeah. I think that I’ll wait until the January semester starts to go back. Then at that point I’ll go part time if I decide to go back at all. I think I need to concentrate on getting the bulk of this record done. Do you think that’s the right choice?”

“Absolutely, Lex. I just didn’t want to persuade your decision. So I’ll see you Wednesday at noon?” Richard asked.

“Yup. Bye Rich.”

Lexi exited the studio and made her way to her blue 2000 Eclipse that she got when she was a senior in high school. As she unlocked the door she heard her name being called.

“Lexi! Wait!”

It was JC.

“Hey, Josh. What’s up?”

“Nothing. I just wanted to tell you that you did great today.”

“Oh,” Lexi said flattered. “Thanks.”

“So, do you have any plans for lunch? I’d love to talk to you a little more.”

Lexi thought of Matt for a millisecond then responded.

“No, no I don’t.”

“Great! Would you do me the honor of accompanying me to a local restaurant?” JC asked in a fake British accent.

“I’d be delighted,” Lexi responded doing the same.”

Within 15 minutes, Lexi and JC were sitting in a booth at Lone Star Steakhouse and Saloon (a local restaurant chain that never had the business they deserved). Once they placed their orders, JC began conversation.

“So, ‘Slight Obsession’ is a great song. Where’d you get the concept of it?”

“Well, I actually wrote it my senior year of high school. It’s just about liking someone and them not even knowing you exist, but I’m sure you don’t know what that’s like.”

JC laughed, “You’d be surprised, Lexi. You’d be surprised…”

“Speaking of which,” Lexi said changing subjects, “Do you have a significant other? If you mind me asking.”

“No, not at all. Well, I did have a girlfriend, we broke up recently. About a week ago actually.”

“Oh, I’m sorry,” Lexi said sympathetically.

“It’s ok. All things happen for a reason. It just wasn’t meant to be.”

“I see…”

Lexi was lucky enough to be cut off by the arrival of their food. About half and hour later they were done eating, and Lexi’s cell phone rang.

“Excuse me,” Lexi said to JC. “Hello?”

“Hey, Lexi. Where are you? I went to your condo, but you weren’t there.”

“Hi, Matt. Well, I think it’s safe to assume that I’m not at home,” Lexi responded jokingly.

“I don’t find that funny, Lexi. It’s almost 3 in the afternoon! You know that I have to go out of town for another game in two days, and I wanted to spend some time with my girlfriend before I left again.”

“Look, I’m sorry. I’m eating lunch with one of my producers, and we’re almost done. I’ll meet you at your place in 20 minutes. Ok?”

“Ok. Later.”

Matt hung up before Lexi had a chance to say goodbye. She was angered by his phone call but not surprised. As perfect as Matt appeared to be, he still had his outbursts, and they were starting to get on Lexi’s nerves. They’ve never been violent or scary, but they still bothered her.

“Is everything ok?” JC asked caringly.

“Yeah, that was just my boyfriend. He travels a lot and he just wants to see me before he goes out of town again.”

“Your boyfriend…” JC said. “Well, then I guess we better get going.”

“Yeah. Thank you so much for taking me to lunch. I had a great time.”

“Me too. We should do it again sometime.”

“Definitely.”

Fifteen minutes later, Lexi pulled up to Matt’s apartment complex. She walked up to the door and unlocked it to see Matt in the kitchen. He greeted her pulling her into his arms and kissing her.

“Hey, it’s good to see you too!” Lexi said chuckling.

“Sweetie, I’m sorry about the phone call. I just didn’t know where you were, and I started to get worried.”

“I told you I had a recording session today…”

“I know, but I thought you’d be done earlier. So who were you having lunch with again?”

“Josh Chasez. He’s a producer on my CD.”

“Oh, I see…”

Lexi procceeded to tell Matt about her recording session, and he talked even longer about baseball and the team. Sometimes Lexi thought that Matt didn’t take her singing seriosuly, but she didn’t worry about it.
