Chapter Fifteen

Ring, ring, ring…

“Hello?”

“Hey, Lexi! How’d the house hunt go?”

“Who is this?”

“It’s JC! Have you forgotten me already?”

Lexi laughed. “I’m just kidding. What’s up, Josh?”

“Nuttin much…it’s not too late to be calling is it?”

“Actually, it is. My mom might come in and tell me to get off the phone because I have to get up for school tomorrow at 5:30AM.”

JC sensed Lexi’s sarcasm and began to whisper. “Oh, I totally forgot. Do you want me to talk to you tomorrow in earth science?”

“Umm, why are you whispering?”

“Oh...right,” JC laughed.

“And besides,” Lexi added, “I never took earth science in high school. It’s all about biology!” Lexi went off on a tangent. “I wish that I had earth science, though. Damn bio. The only reason I took it was because I needed another higher level for my IB exams…” :)

“What the hell are you talking about?”

“Oh, nothing. Sorry.”

“So,” JC said changing the subject, “What are you doing?”

“Just packing up some of my things in boxes. Oh, I never answered your question. I bought a condo!”

“That’s great! I wanna see it. Where is it?”

Lexi contemplated telling Josh where her new place was, but she decided against it. “Oh, it’s in a huge development. I think you’ll like it.”

“Cool. So how about I take you out to breakfast tomorrow morning, and then you can take me by to see it?” JC proposed.

“Sounds good. Pick me up at…ten?”

“Will do. I’ll let you get some more packing done, but go to bed soon. It’s almost midnight!”

“Ok, Daddy. Good night.”

Lexi woke up to the sound of Destiny’s Child playing on the radio and to the sight of boxes scattered over her room. As the song finished, she heard the DJ’s voice boom from her alarm clock.

“It’s a beautiful Saturday morning here in sunny Orlando! With a high of seventy-two and a low of fifty-eight, you guys be sure to bring a jacket where ever you go, but enough of me talking. Here’s the new one from *NSYNC! Ya know, rumor has it that they’re kicking off their US tour in the beginning of April, but don’t take my word for it!”

Lexi barely paid attention to what was being said as she made her way to the bathroom. She took a quick shower and threw on a pair of jeans and a matching jean jacket.

Ding dong…

Lexi went down the stairs, opened the door, and left to go to breakfast with JC. Within 20 minutes they were sitting at a booth at the Pancake House. Yet again, JC was wearing a hat in an effort to hide his identity.

“Does wearing a hat really work?” Lexi asked.

“Yeah, most of the time, but there’s always those times…”

“Yeah.”

“So tell me about this condo. How many bedrooms?”

“Three, and two and a half baths. I love it.”

“So did you remember the name of the development?”

“No, you’ll just have to wait until I take you there.”

“Ok. I keep on forgetting that Christmas is coming up. Have you started shopping yet?”

“Yeah, I’m surprised! I usually wait until the last minute.”

“Oh, I’m almost done. I always start early. Are you going down to Fort Lauderdale to be with your parents for the holidays?”

“No. They’re finally going on a cruise to the Bahamas for vacation. I’ve been trying to get them to do that forever.”

“That sounds great! So where are you gonna go for Christmas?”

“I’ll probably stay here and be with Nicki and Jen and some other friends. You?”

“I’m going back up to Maryland to be with my family.”

After JC said this, he was silent for about a minute, as if he were thinking about something.

“Earth to Josh! What are you thinking about?” Lexi asked.

“Nothing.”
