Chapter 16

Nick, Amaya and AJ watched in horror as Yvette hit her head on the rock and fell limply into the water. Two seconds later Nick jumped and fell into the water, feet away from where Yvette was floating face down. AJ and Amaya were already swimming over. Nick flipped Yvette over. "Oh my God" Amaya whispered Yvette's face was white and she wasn't breathing. Between AJ and Nick they pulled Yvette to the shore careful of her leg, which seemed to be broken. Amaya rushed off to call the paramedics while Nick and AJ checked Yvette's pulse and administered CPR. "Come on sweetie" Nick muttered and counted to 3. Then he lowered his mouth on hers and forced air down her throat. "You get me a helicopter and you get it NOW!" Amaya shouted into some tourist's phone. Finally AJ and Nick got a pulse and a couple of minutes later a helicopter landed nearby. Amaya and AJ went to get the paramedics and Nick stayed with Yvette. "Damn! It's all my fault" Nick muttered. The paramedics rushed over carrying a stretcher and a bag. They looked Yvette over checked her pulse and carefully laid her on the stretcher. "You guys did an excellent job" the blond paramedic said "We're gonna need one of you to come on the chopper. "You go... you're her best friend" Nick said looking at Amaya. "No... she needs you" Amaya took Nick's hands in hers "You need... you have to be strong..." she gazed in his guilt filled eyes. "You're gonna help her get through this..." Nick ran off and jumped in the helicopter and yelled "Let's go". Amaya and AJ stood silently as the watched the chopper take off. After a few seconds Amaya unfreezed. She quickly went over to the dinghy and pushed it in the water. "Get in!" she ordered AJ. He quickly obeyed. Amaya started the engine and jumped in. She rammed the engine and put the gas at it's fullest. "Can you drive this fast around boats?" AJ said finally breaking his silence. "No" Amaya said flatly as she skillfully maneuvered between anchored and moving boats. Once they reached a marina, Amaya tied up the dinghy and ran to the office. Almost a second later, a cab arrived to take them to the hospital. "Relax baby..." AJ said noticing Amaya's nervousness "You are so tense" He hugged her and she loosened up a bit. When they got to the hospital, the adrenaline tensed Amaya up again. She practically ran to the front desk where they told her what floor Yvette was in. Then she ran to the elevator. AJ was short of breath trying to keep up with her. When the elevator door opened... "Nick!" Amaya shouted. He looked up. Amaya saw that he was crying. "Nick, what happened?" Amaya said, her eyes were filling up with tears. "How is she?" AJ asked nervous. "The doctors are checking... at the helicopter she came to, but then passed out again" Nick cried "... I don't think she's gonna make it..." "Don't you dare say that!" Amaya said "She's very strong and she's gonna make it" "Nick, don't be a pessimist..." AJ said " I know that you are afraid but please stay cool" "AJ, you don't understand? I love her… I don't wanna lose her…" Nick said in between sobs. Just as he said that the doctor came out with a pale look on his face. "Are you Yvette Marie's family?" "Doctor, what happened?" Nick asked "I'm allowed to say this to her family... not anyone else..." "I'm her sister" Amaya lied "and he's my boyfriend -looking at AJ- and he's Yvette's boyfriend" "Sorry... I'm allowed to talk to her family miss" the doctor answered looking at Nick. "Look doctor, sir mister whatever..." Nick shouted "I'm her boyfriend and I'm going to marry her soon so don't dare say that I'm not her family" Amaya and AJ were surprised at this point. "YOURE GOING TO TELL ME HOW IS SHE!" Nick yelled The doctor looked at Amaya for approval. She nodded. "Well... she's in a coma right now and we're doing all we can to get her out of it. She had a few cuts and bruises because of the fall and she has her right leg broken..." Maya and AJ looked at each other. Maya had watery eyes and Nick was crying in disbelief. "Is she gonna make it?" Amaya had the strenghth to ask. "We don't know miss" the doctor replied Amaya broke down and hugged AJ. "Can we go see her?" Nick asked "Sure... Come on" They went to the room where Yvette was. Nick looked at all the machines that were holding her life. He just broke down as he approached to the bed. "You have to be strong..." the doc said "Apparently when someone's in a coma they still can hear what's happening... so you have to be strong for her sake and for your sake." "I just can't see her like that..." Nick said, his voice breaking. "Nick, you have to help her wake up..." AJ said "I know" he replied thinking about the task he knew he was going to accomplish "Do you want us to leave you alone with her?" Amaya asked wiping the tears from her eyes. "Yeah, just for a moment." "Ok... we're going to call the guys in Florida and tell them what happened. Do you have their phone numbers?" Amaya asked. "Yeah I think I have them here" Nick looked for his wallet and gave the numbers to AJ and Maya. "Oh... and please call Yvette's parents too" Nick said "No prob" AJ replied They walked out the room leaving Nick alone with Yvette. He walked to the bed. He leaned over and pressed his lips against hers. Just then a tear came down from his face and fell in Yvette's cheek. He pulled apart and took her cold hand. "You know what? I remember the first time I did this... you were so upset because I overheard your conversation with Amaya - he paused - but after I heard those words coming out from your mouth I realized that I was in love with you... those words made me realize how much I love you.... and how much I wanna be with you... That is why I want you to wake up… please baby, you have to do this... you have to answer me!" But there was no response. He continued talking. "I remember how your eyes were looking at me that first day... they were sparkling so much... I think mine did too..." he chuckled. "Anyway, I was so disappointed when you pulled apart from me…Probably you're wondering why am I saying all this... Well I'm just reminding you of all the good times we had. I can't live without you… your eyes your hands, everything you own and I need to live... because believe me in the time I've known you I realized that you are the one. Please... say something... whatever... I would love to see your beautiful green eyes looking at me... your smile… I would give the whole world, I would die just to see your smile. You know, I'm scared but I know you will make it to everything... we have to win this baby... I love you…" With that, he just broke down and cried. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AJ was making the call to Kevin's house when he answered. "Hello?" Kev said "Hi... Kevin?" AJ asked "What's up man... how are you spending your vacations? We're having a blast here..." "Look Kev... I don't know how to say this..." "Is something wrong?" "Well yeah... we're in the hospital.." "What happened? Why are you in the hospital?" "I'm okay don't worry..." "Is it Nick?" "Almost" "What happened?" he asked impatiently "Well... we went to an island near Puerto Rico and we were climbing some rocks... we got at the top of a very big one and everybody jumped from it... and... Yvette slipped and now she's in a coma..." "What???" "Yeah... you have to come over here... She needs us together... We think she's not gonna make it..." "Thanks for calling. I'll tell the guys and we'll get there as soon as possible... OK?" "ok" "Bye AJ and thank you" "No prob... bye!" AJ said as he hung the phone. Amaya was beside him. "AJ.. I'm really scared... I mean she's my best friend, I confide everything to her... I'm afraid she might..." "Shhh! Don't say that... we all know that Yvette is a strong person... she's gonna make it... I know it..." AJ said hugging Amaya and kissing her forehead "I'm afraid she'll leave Nick alone… He really loves her" "I know that too.. Come on let's go back to the room..." They walked towards Yve's room... When they got there they saw Nick holding Yvette's hand and crying in her lap. "Nick... what happened?" Amaya asked afraid of what he was going to say. "She doesn't react... and I need her..." Nick said in between sobs. "Everything's gonna be alright" Amaya said "Do you wanna go for a walk?" "No! I'm gonna stay with her until... until..." "Ok..." Amaya said walking towards the bed holding AJ's hand. "Hi Yve... How are you feeling? I hope you're ok... We were worried about you girl, but you know what? If you wake up everything is going to be better... your boyfriend here is suffering a lot... AJ and I are suffering too... You have to think that your parents and friends especially Nick are crying their heart out for you... Please Yve... just open your eyes and tell us that you're ok..." Amaya managed to say. Then Amaya heard Nick mumbling something . Then she realized he was singing. "I'll go anywhere for you, anywhere you ask me to, I'll go anywhere for you, anywhere you want me to, your love is all that I can see, it's all I'm never gonna need, there's one thing for sure I know it's true, baby I'll go anywhere for you" Nick sang There was no response from Yvette. "We're gonna go to the charter to get your clothes and our clothes... if there's any reaction call us immediately. We called the guys and they said they'll make the arrangements to come back" Amaya said Nick wasn't listening at what Amaya said but he mumbled ok in response. Amaya and AJ left the room leaving Nick and Yvette alone. "We have to go to the charter and get back as fast as possible... I don't wanna leave my best friend alone..." Amaya said "Well... Nick is with her right now" AJ said "But it's not the same... I wanna be with her and I wanna help her" "I know Maya... I know" With this they took a cab to the marina and went to the charter. They grabbed their clothes and packed some stuff for Nick and Yve. "The guys didn't tell when they were going to come?" Amaya asked "Nope... They said as soon as possible'" AJ said "I'm really afraid of how the girls will react... Krystel is Yvette's best friend... and Carla is very close to her..." "They have to be strong for her... she needs us right beside her" "But it's not easy AJ... seeing your best friend in some hospital bed with machines all over her... in a coma... with cuts and bruises all over her body... with a broken leg... because she slipped when she was going to jump... it's not that easy" "I know it's not easy... we were worried about Brian when he was in the surgery... I know how you feel ... but you have to be strong... You are strong... you were running like crazy on the beach... if it wasn't for you well, if it wasn't for you Yvette might not be here... I mean you called the helicopter... you got her here..." AJ looked Amaya straight in the eye "You saved Yvette's life" Amaya finally broke down when she realized what she had done. AJ put his arms around her and hugged her. They stood there for a while until Amaya's sobs subsided. And even though Amaya didn't see AJ had tears in his eyes too. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- "Oh my god!" Carla said "I can't believe it!" Alexandra said They were all in some plane back to Puerto Rico where Yvette was. She had been brought back to Puerto Rico because Virgin Gorda's hospital was not prepared for this kind of emergency. Kevin had immediately called Howie and Brian who were each doing their own thing. "You guys?" Kev said " When we get there, we have to get Nick away from the hospital... he's not eating, sleeping, Amaya said his hair is a mess and you know what that takes" ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Finally the group got to Puerto Rico and succeeded in dragging Nick away from Yvette long enough for him to shave and comb his hair. A while later Yvette's parents arrived. "Amaya!" Yvette's mom came running and hugged Amaya. "How is she?" "Stable but in a coma" Amaya motioned the group to come, and introduced them. "Everyone this is Lydia, Yvette's mom" Amaya said Yvette's dad hung back absorbing the whole scene. "Can we see her? Lydia asked "Yeah come on" Amaya walked over to a room and opened the door. Lydia and Charles (the dad) walked in. On the bed was Yvette and holding her hand was a young blond man. "Lydia, Charles, this is Nick, Yvette's boyfriend" Amaya said They both looked surprised at the naming of boyfriend. "Young man, leave us alone with our daughter for a while?" Charles asked Nick looked at Amaya then at Lydia and Charles then at Yvette. He stood up kissed Yvette's forehead and let go of her hand and walked out of the room followed by Amaya. She closed the door after her. Amaya and Nick sat in the bench right outside Yvette's room. Suddenly Lydia started shouting... "Yvette Marie! How dare you break our rules! You know we don't allow you to have a boyfriend! Now you know why! This is his entire fault. If you hadn't gone running around with that blond surfer dude and that dangerous boy Amaya says is her boyfriend, ridiculous the boy. Amaya and Nick were in shock. A couple minutes after Lydia and Charles came out. "We'll be back tomorrow..." Charles said "Jeez to be their only daughter they treat her awfully good" Howie commented sarcastically, when they were out of earshot "I know" Carla said ----------------------------------------------------------------------
