The days went by and Rachel decided to stay at Nick's house to see if she remembered everything that happened between those walls. She played with Colin and Alyssa but didn't have a clue about her memories of the past. How was her relationship with Nick? Did she love him like Nick said she did? Did they ever fight? As she thought about that last question a flashback came to her mind.
"Nick! Leave me alone! You know I love you but I need time!" Rachel screamed at the top of her lungs.
"You know what? I thought I loved you... but I've realized I don't... I don't love you! I don't love you! I don't want you in my life!" Nick screamed back.
She sat up on the bed where she was lying and looked around. What happened between her and Nick? Did he love her? What was the big fight about? At that moment Nick entered the room.
"Hey" he said, taking a seat next to her on the bed. She half-smiled without a word. Immediately, Nick noticed that something was wrong.
"Rach?"
"Hm?"
"Is something wrong?"
She shook her head without a word. She shut her eyes in frustration and looked at him. "Did you love me Nick?"
Nick chuckled a little. "Of course I did... and I still do, with all my heart"
"Did we have any fights?"
"Well, sweetie... we did bicker like any married couple"
She nodded. At the back of his mind, Nick still remembered the big fight they had just a couple of days before the car accident. He hoped she never remembered that.
"I want to get out of here" she finally decided.
Nick looked at her with a bewildered look. She was fine a couple of hours ago.
"Do you wanna go for a ride?"
"No, I want to get out of here... and I never want to see you again"
"W-what? Rachel, what's wrong? Did you remember something?"
"Actually, yes... and it wasn't a very nice memory of us too... you're a bad person Nick, and I'm not going to deal with that. I still want to be part of Colin's life but I don't want to be part of yours"
Nick took her hand in an attempt of making her reconsider everything that she was saying. She pushed him away.
"No, I want to get out of here"
"What did you remember Rachel?" Nick asked in a desperate tone.
Tears started to fall out of her eyes. With his thumb, Nick wiped them away but she pushed him away once again.
"Rach, I need to know... what did you remember?"
She opened her mouth to tell him but nothing came out. She began to feel frustrated again, not knowing what to say or what to do.
"For God's sake Rachel... please... tell me "
"You told me you didn't love me... you told me you wanted me to get out of your life"
Nick closed his eyes. How could he forget about that fight? She remembered what she didn't have to. He couldn't erase away the words he said and now they came back and worst, they came from the person he loved the most. He sighed and ran his hands through his hair as he began to tell the story.
"A few days before your accident, we had a big fight... and yes, I told you that I didn't love you and that I wanted you out of my life forever" he remembered. Tears started falling out of his eyes as he continued. "You were so mad at me that you stormed out of the house and left... and, you went to someone else's house"
Rachel stared at him in disbelief. "W-what? Was I unfaithful to you?"
Nick didn’t answer her question and continued with the story. "You went to AJ’s house. He’s my friend… my best buddy. I remember that when you came back to the house, you picked up your stuff and you left again, telling me that you were going to live at AJ’s house for a while, until things softened up between us. A few days later, you disappeared and AJ and I didn’t talk about this anymore. I wanted to think that you guys didn’t do anything and that’s what I think until this day." he took her hands in his. "But Rach, I love you… you don’t know how much I do. I don’t want you to go…" he pleaded with tears in his eyes. "I don’t want to lose you again… I want to show you that we did spend great times together... And I want to revive everything that we had… I want you to feel comfortable though" he looked down.
"Nick, I just don’t know what to say"
"Don’t say anything" he whispered.
Rachel looked down, feeling a little guilty that she did spend some days with another man besides her husband. She didn’t know what to think though. Did they do something? Was she in love with this AJ guy and not with Nick? How was her relationship with AJ. There was one person who knew all the answers.
"I want to talk to AJ, Nick" Rachel finally said.
He nodded slowly. "O-okay…" he agreed.
He rose up from the bed and went straight to the phone. He dialed AJ’s number and waited for him to answer.
"Talk to me" Nick heard over the phone.
"Hi AJ"
"Hey, Nick... what's up, man?"
"I need you to come here right now"
Nick's tone preoccupied AJ. "What's wrong?"
Nick went outside the room. "Rachel's back"
"What?!?" AJ practically screamed through the phone.
"Yeah... she wants to talk to you"
"To me? What for?" he asked, not fully knowing what was up.
"About what we never talk about" Nick sighed. As Nick said that, AJ knew. "I'll be right there..." he mumbled back.
Nick hung the phone and went towards the room where Rachel was.
"He'll be right over" he mumbled sadly.
"What's wrong Nick?"
"I don't want to talk about it"
"Okay" she agreed and went over to the other room to play with the kids.
Nick sighed loudly and flopped down on the bed. He buried his face in his hands and started thinking about everything that was going on and how fast it was happening. He didn't want to lose Rachel or her love... but she didn't love him the same way. She didn't remember how she loved him. He thought about those wonderful times they had together and wished for them to come back. With that in mind, he drifted into a long sleep until AJ came.
Rachel opened the door. AJ's mouth dropped open.
"Holy shit"
She looked at him strangely. "Are you AJ?"
He nodded slowly. What was wrong with her? he thought.
"She doesn't remember anything" Nick said from behind her.
"Ohh" was all AJ could say.
"AJ, can I talk to you?" Rachel asked politely.
"Sure" he agreed as he led her into the living room.
"Nick, can you leave us alone?" Rachel looked at Nick.
He felt a little disappointed but agreed. He turned around and left the room without a word. Rachel sat beside AJ and looked at him closely.
"I don't remember anything... so, you need to fill me in, in everything that happened between us" she started.
"What do you want to know?" he asked carefully.
"When Nick and I had a certain fight... did I go to your house and stayed there?"
AJ took a deep breath. This was going to be a long afternoon. "Yup, you went... you told me that things with Nick and you were not going too well so you asked me if I didn't mind if you stayed with me until things softened up between you two"
"Did I do something with you?" she asked simply.
AJ stood silent and slowly nodded his head. Rachel's eyes widened up as she looked at him, not able to say anything. Little did she know that Nick was standing outside the living room watching and listening to the whole conversation.
