Rachel's jaw dropped. "AJ... you know you didn't do it"
He turned around and faced her. "How do you know? You weren't there"
"AJ you didn't do it" Rachel replied in the verge of tears. AJ turned around from her and looked at the policeman.
"Well, aren't you gonna do anything?"
"Come on son, you've got long days ahead of you" the policeman replied taking him by one arm and leading him to the car.
Rachel stood there, awed by what AJ just did. She was completely sure that he didn't do anything. Or did he? She didn't know what to believe now. Everything was going on so fast. One night she'll be happy and thankful for everything that was given to her and the next day AJ would say that he threw Nick's ex-lover out of a window. She closed her eyes and went inside realizing that Nick was still in their room. She went upstairs and opened the door to the room. Nick was facing the window.
"Nick?" Rachel said, her eyes still swollen.
Nick turned around and saw her crying. His eyes were a mix of emotions and he certainly couldn't resist the fact that he had her in front of him. He went up to her and put his arms around her, stroking her hair.
"What's wrong?" Nick whispered.
"The police were here" she whispered back looking up to him to see his reaction.
Nick's eyes shot open. "W-what?"
"They were looking for you" Rachel replied taking his hand and taking a deep breath. "I want you to answer me in an honest way. Did you have anything to do with the fact that Patricia was thrown out of a window?" Nick looked at her, honesty written in his eyes.
"I didn't have to do anything with it... I swear Rachel. Yes, I messed up my relationship with you and all but please, believe me... I had nothing to do with Patricia going out of that window." he finished.
"AJ did it, right?" Rachel said, her eyes watering again.
"What?" Nick asked, confused.
"AJ did it" she repeated, this time with a sense of determination in her voice.
"No, AJ didn't do it... it was an accident... he didn't throw her"
Rachel's eyes widened at the thought that AJ said this to the cops to save Nick from going to jail. "AJ just said to the cops that he was the one who threw Patricia out of the window"
"You're kidding me right?"
"No... they were looking for you, and he said that... they just took him to the police station" Rachel informed.
"I gotta go there" Nick finally said. "Do you want to go with me?"
Rachel nodded.
Immediately, Nick took the phone and dialed his mom's phone number and asked her if she could stay with the kids for a while. They got in the car as fast as they could and they drove to Jane's house to leave the kids there.
"I'll be here as soon as possible" Nick said as he left the kids with Jane. "Thanks mom"
"No problem hun... take your time"
"I'll explain everything to you later"
"Alright. Be careful" Jane finished as she closed the door and Nick got into of the car.
"Everything is going to be alright" Nick reassured Rachel.
"I hope so" she smiled.
Nick looked straight down the road. "Now that I have you here... I just wanted to tell you that I'm sorry for everything, okay?"
"Nick, it's just... it hurts me so much, although I don't remember a damn thing about my life. You went out and cheated on me... and that's something that I will have to live with"
Nick closed his eyes. "I know... but it was only two weeks"
"I don't care how long it was"
"I'm sorry"
Rachel sighed and looked down. "I don't know what to say right now, Nickolas"
Nick looked at her. "You know that you only called me Nickolas when I was in trouble?"
"Sorry"
"Rach, I love you and I wouldn't do anything to hurt you on purpose... I guess I was just tired of being committed just to you"
Rachel's mouth dropped open. "Then why did you marry me then?"
"Sorry, it wasn't supposed to come out this way" Nick apologized. "I really wanted to marry you and I don't regret anything. But, our relationship wasn't the best one... that's why I did it... and then after that, I wanted to tell you the truth about Patricia but the accident happened.. I'm really sorry about everything. I really hope that you find it in your heart to forgive me"
"I already did, Nick" Rachel looked at him. "I'm beginning to understand the love I had for you before the accident and I'm beginning to feel the same way you told me I felt before all this"
"I won't do anything to hurt you ever"
"Is that a promise?"
"You bet my ass it is"
"Nice ass by the way" Rachel smiled.
"Thanks, yours too... but really, I'll try my best to make you happy" Nick smiled and took her hand.
Rachel nodded and smiled. "Now we have to dedicate our time to AJ... he doesn't deserve to be there"
"He didn't do it Rachel... I was with him that day and he didn't do it... Patricia threatened me to say something if I didn't go with her and she did... AJ is innocent"
"Okay... we'll just have to say that to the police"
A couple of minutes later, Nick and Rachel got to the police station and asked for AJ. At first, the policemen didn't want AJ to talk to anybody but then they agreed to let Nick and Rachel in for a couple of minutes. Rachel grasped Nick's arm tighter when they entered the little secluded room in which they were going to talk to AJ.
"It's going to be okay" Nick whispered.
"He doesn't deserve to be here" Rachel said, her eyes scanning every corner of the room.
"I know... I know" he repeated, pulling a chair from the corner of the room and sitting down in it. Rachel sat next to him.
A couple of seconds later, a door opened and AJ appeared. Nick stood up but AJ made Nick sit down again. AJ sat down in front of them and waited for either one of them to say something.
"Why did you say what you said?" Rachel asked AJ. AJ stood silent. Rachel looked up to Nick and then to AJ waiting for an answer.
"Because it's the truth" AJ repeated looking down.
"Bullshit AJ! You know you didn't throw her out of that fucking window!" Nick yelled.
AJ looked at him, with a calm look in his eyes. "Why are you lying Nick... dont' lie to yourself or to your wife"
Nick closed his eyes and ran his hands through his hair. "AJ, please... you didn't do it...I was with you damnit! You didn't throw her!"
Rachel was sitting there, confused about what they were saying.
"Guys, just tell me the truth" Rachel finally said.
"AJ tell her the truth" Nick said.
AJ looked down and back up to them. "I threw her out the window"
With that, Nick stormed out of the room, leaving Rachel and AJ alone.
AJ looked down once again, not able to look at Rachel straight in the eye.
"AJ, please... I know you didn't do it... can you please confirm that for me?" Rachel said bringing her hand towards his chin and lifting it up so that AJ would look at her. Right then and there AJ broke down in tears, making Rachel tear up too.
"I'm sorry... but I just couldn't let Nick go through this"
"So, you did all this just to get Nick out of jail?"
AJ sighed. "Rach, he didn't do it and I didn't do it... but if I didn't say I did it, the policemen could have taken Nick instead of me... and you know? he has a life, he's finally happy and he has his kids..., I just couldn't let that happen to him"
"Why did you say it then... if you didn't do it and if Nick didn't do it?"
"Because...Patricia will be bugging your lives even more... I don't want that for you guys... At last, Nick is happy. He was miserable when you left and when you appeared again, he was the happiest person. I couldn't let all this happen to him. I just rather say that it is my fault than just keep up with all this"
"AJ... you're not going to stay here for long... I'm going to get you out, okay?"
"Don't" AJ said.
"AJ you DON'T belong here... you're not supposed to be here. Hell, none of us is supposed to be here!" Rachel said, getting upset.
"Don't tell anything to Nick" AJ said.
"He has the right to know... plus, you're going to come out of there soon so he has to know"
"Don't Rachel. If you do this, Nick might come to jail while everything gets clarified... don't do it." AJ said, taking her hands. "Rachel, for the sake of your kids, don't do it"
"But-how-?"
"Don't do it" he whispered, his eyes open wide.
Rachel looked down. "I'll get you out of here"
"Don't tell Nick anything"
"I won't... but I'll get you out of here"
"Promise me you won't tell him"
"I won't" Rachel said, tears running down her cheeks.
"Promise me"
"I promise, AJ"
"Okay" AJ said, getting out of the chair and leaving to his cell.
