We got there sooner than I wanted, then the horrifying test began. Before I went in, Nick faced me, gave me a hug, and said “Be brave and we’ll get through this.” He had to wait in the waiting room. He tried to sort out his nerves, sine they were all jumpy…and after while he could not stand the silence and the pain of not knowing. He got up and called my best friend Katie from the hospital.
“Hello?”
“Katie, hey, this is Nick”
“Hi, what are you calling me at this godly hour for? You know people do need their sleep.”
“ Katie, you have to come down to the hospital, quick.”
“What for? Nick, what is the matter? What is going on?”
“Just get down here as fast as you can, ok?”
“I am on my way.”
“Thanks.”
“Bye”
“Bye” About 15 minutes later, Katie came through the door and gave Nick a hug and asked what was wrong.
"Katie, umm…Brie has possibly been raped.”
“Oh, my god” was her only reply. She sat down and Nick filled her in with all the details. She was so distraught that she could hardly speak.
“I’m waiting for her to get finished with the exam.”
About a half hour later…. A nurse comes out, Nick and Katie stand up, and the nurse informs them that the exam is finished.
“Can I go in and see her?” Katie asked. The nurse nodded yes and Katie told Nick that she was bringing her out in a few minutes. When Katie opened the door to my room, I was sitting on the table crying and she came up to me and gave me a great big hug.
“Nick told me everything. Are you okay?”
“No, I am not okay! This… this was horrible, not to mention this whole terrifying night”
“Do you know the results?” I cried harder. She knew then what the answer was instantly.
“He…he raped me, Katie!”
“ I am so sorry, Brie.. I am so so sorry that you had to go through this.” “
It.. it was so awful.. I don’t even remember it.”
“I know, sweetie.”
“Oh God, Nick.”
“What about him?”
“This is going to destroy everything. Oh geez.. we were also talking about marriage a few days ago.”
“And?”
“And, well… the promise that I made to myself was broken.. I am not a virgin anymore. I wanted to save it for the man I love, the man I marry. We both made the promise to each other.”
She took my hand and said “ oh. But I don’t think that this will change anything between you two.”
"Yes it will. I swore to him that I would save myself for him… that we would show each other how we truly felt about each other on our wedding night, both being virgins together. He… he won’t want to now… not after this.”
“Yes, he will”
“How do you know?”
“I just know, that’s all. You have never felt the experience and pleasure of sex. You were not aware of it at all.. You don’t know what happened.”
“No, it’s also the fact that another guy touched me! Not to mention that he had sex with me.” I turned away from her and looked at the wall and turned back and said
“God, Katie, this is horrible. Nick is going to hate me..”
“No he isn’t.. He is waiting for you out there, worried sick about you. I know that you can get through this.”
“I am glad you’re so sure.”
From there, Katie turned and left the room , leaving me to get dressed and try to calm down some. She went back out the waiting room were Nick sat almost going out of his mind.
“Did you see her? How is she?”
“Yes, I saw her, she’s not too great.”
He bared for the worst; waiting for her to drop the bomb. He had tears in his eyes and ran his hand through his hair.
“Nick , she was raped.”
“Oh, geez, Katie. I thought that would be the case. You sounded like it was something more than that. She must be do scared and hurt. I gotta go see her.” She took his arm and said
“Not yet… Nick, not yet. She needs a little time.”
