Epilogue

Nick stretched his legs out on the chaise lounge and slid his sunglasses on as he watched the waves roll up onto the shore. He sighed and closed his eyes, the plaguing vision of Jenny's falling body forcing his eyes back open. I should have done something . . . anything. There must've been a way to save her . . .

"It's over, Nick . . . you should be a little more happy about it . . . " came the soft voice from behind him. He hadn't even noticed the sliding glass doors open and close as Melissa padded out onto the deck in slippers and a robe. The morning sun was warming the golden sand as they watched the still empty beach. She walked over to sit on the edge of his chair, but he pulled her into his lap playfully. Her laughed filled the quiet air, mixing with the shrill call of a seagull. Looking up, she noticed Nick's smile slowly fade back to a frown. "It wasn't your fault . . . " she whispered as her lips pressed to his chin.

"Why do you always know what I'm thinking . . .?"

"Because I love you." His lips were suddenly pressed against hers again as he shifted to cradle her between his thighs. His arms were wrapped tightly around her so she couldn't move even if she wanted to.

"Wanna go upstairs before the kids wake up?" he murmured against her lips.

"Actually . . . I came out her to talk to you," she replied as she pulled her face away to look into his eyes.

"Is something wrong?" His eyes traveled all over her face in search of a clue or hint.

"I'm not sure. I don't think so . . . " she lowered her eyes and chewed on the edge of her lip. "I know how much you love Sebastian and Mackenzie . . . "

"With all my heart. But what do you mean by that?"

"Can you spare some more space in that heart . . . for another child?" she looked up at him with shining green eyes.

"You're . . . ? Again . . . ?" His mouth dropped slightly open before spreading into a grin. His hand came to her stomach, the emotions as strong as the first time she told him about Sebastian and Mackenzie. His lips pressed gentle kisses all over her face before he whispered in her ear. "This calls for celebration . . ." He swept her into his arms and ran inside, closing the bedroom door with his foot and shutting them away from the rest of the world.
