Chapter 16

"No, of course not. The doctor said you could have started remembering things yesterday even. Do you mind me asking what you have remembered?"

"Well, once I kind of saw myself on the beach. I haven't remembered anything too big. Just small things."

"Was it this beach?"

"No, I'm pretty sure that it was a different one."

"What about your second one?"

"Just a couple minutes ago, when you were hugging me. I saw you dancing with a girl. I don't know who she was. Maybe a girlfriend," she said the last comment teasingly and smiled.

Nick knew which girl Jessica was talking about. The only girl she had ever seen him dance with.

"By the way, Nick. You've never said if you have a girlfriend or not. Do you?"

"Well, uh. . . no. I don't."

"Why not? You seem like the kind of guy that would have girls crawling all over you."

"I don't know. Not enough time for one I guess."

"Oh." Jessica had been falling for Nick all over again since he came this morning. She hadn't gotten the courage to say anything yet though.

"Let's do something," he said.

"Like what?"

"I don't know. How about watch a movie?"

"Okay." Nick got up and walked to the video cabinet. He started pulling out tapes. "This one's no good. . . that's old. . . too sad. . . here we go! Independence Day."

"Ummm. . . okay. Is it any good?"

"Yeah. It's a couple years old, but still pretty good. It's funny too. Parts of it." He put the tape in and pushed play. Then, he sat with Jessica on the sofa.

"Nick?" she said.

"Yeah?"

"I really like you."

"I'm glad. I like you too," he knew what she was trying to say, but acted like he didn't.

"No, Nick, I don't think you know what I mean." She leaned over and gave him a gentle kiss on the lips. It was very quick, and when she looked at him, he couldn't help but say, "I see what you mean. I like you that way too."

Jessica leaned her head on his shoulder. "I just want to get my memory back before anything serious happens, though."

"I know." He touched her hair with his hand. "Don't worry. I'll be here with you."
