Chapter 25

"She had been dancing her whole life, but had only recently started gymnastics. Her favorite colors were green and blue. Her favorite ice cream was cookies and cream. She loved butterflies."

AJ and Brian were silent as he spoke.

"She sounds like she was a typical girl right? But, she wasn't. She was so much more. When she walked into a room, it lit up. When you talked to her, she really listened. When she said 'I love you' she meant it," Nick looked down at his shoes, pausing as he tried to get rid of he lump in his throat.

Six months earlier, Brian and AJ had found him lying unconscious on the side of the road, in the pouring rain. He was in a coma for two months before he woke up. When Nick was told that Sky had not been found, he went into a state of depression and barely spoke for months. This was the most Brian or AJ had heard him say in a very long time.

"Her mother abandoned her father and her when she was only five. Her father tried hard to be a good dad, but he wasn't an affectionate person, and all he ever did was work."

About a week before, Nick had gotten a hold of Lisa, who was Sky's best friend. They had spent hours talking about Sky, and how much they missed her.

"She wasn't popular in school. Lisa was her only friend. She never had a boyfriend. Amazing, huh? She was so special, and hardly anyone saw. As you see, she didn't have an easy life," Nick said.

Brian prayed silently that he would keep talking and stop holding everything inside.

"At one point, she told me she loved me. Do you know what I said? Do you know what I told her? 'I don't love you, Sky. Not that way.' That's what I told her! How stupid am I?"

He was quiet a long time before he whispered, "Sometimes, I can still hear her. It's what keeps me going. I wouldn't be able to live, if it wasn't for that."

"I miss you so much."

I miss you too.

"Why did you have to switch the bottles, Sky? I can't live like this. I'd rather be dead than live without you".

"Don't say things like that. You have to live. If not for everyone on Earth who love you, than for me.

"It's so hard."

"I know, but you can't give up.

"Sky, right before I was knocked out, I said something to you. Did you hear what is was?"

Silence.

"Sky?"

"You told me you loved me."

"Why don't you believe me?"

"I never said that."

"You're thinking it though."

"When I first told you I loved you, you said you didn't love me. Why should it be any different? I mean, you thought you were about to die. You just felt like you had to say it.

"No, I didn't! I meant it, and I still do."

"Then, why didn't you say it before?

"Because, I wasn't good enough for you. You deserved better than someone like me."

"You were always good enough for me!"

"I want to hold you so badly right now."

"But you can't."

"I need you."

"Not yet."

"I love you."

"I love you and I have to go now."

"Why?"

"Because it's over. This was the last time we could talk.

"What!? No!"

"Yes. You need to move on. You can't have me holding you back.

"You're not."

"I am."

"I can't live without you," Nick's voice finally broke and he let himself cry.

"You can, and you will. I still love you, Nick, and I'll be waiting for you until we're together again.

"Sky?"

"Yes?"

"We're still connected?"

"Forever."

"I love you."

"I love you too. I'll see you in Heaven."

"I'll see you in Heaven," Nick whispered, but she was already gone.

He squeezed his eyes shut, and a tear rolled down his cheek, chin, and off of his face. Nick opened his eyes and saw it lying on the sidewalk. He could see Sky's face in the tear and that's when he knew it would be all right. That's when he knew he was able to go on.

The End
