Chapter 16

"...your mind. Also, your body. I control every physical and mental action that goes on with you. You hate it, and you hate me, but there is nothing you can do about it. Do you hear me? NOTHING!"

Laughter...evil...Laughter...echoing...echoing...

"STOP! STOP LAUGHING!" Sobs escaping...tears running down...falling...falling...

"No...This is fun! I love to see the stupid humans suffer!"

More laughter...bouncing off of the walls of the hallow cave...bouncing...bouncing back in their faces.

"STOP!" Sky sat up, tears streaming down her face, her hands clammy, and covered in cold, disgusting sweat.

She could scarcely breathe, and she felt faint. She ran her fingers through her hair and said to herself, "What was that? What just happened?" She started crying hysterically.

Her thoughts seemed to be in a large colorful knot, tangled up and hard to interpret. Sky got out of bed, and opened her door. She raced out, and down the hall. She was blinded by her tears, but kept running, trying to escape the horror that she had just experienced. She ran frantically until she reached his room.

"Nick, Nick, Nick..." she pounded on the door, like a mad women. A blurry eyed Nick stumbled to the door.

"Sky? It's three thirty in the morning!" he exclaimed.

"Oh, oh Nick..." Sky threw her arms around him, crying into his chest.

Now even more confused, but concerned too, Nick whispered, "Shhh, it's okay...what's wrong?"

But as soon as he asked, and before she responded, he knew. Her thoughts seemed to fly into his head. Nick shuddered involuntarily. The images that had just entered his mind were extremely disturbing.

"Oh my God..." he muttered. "It's okay, Sky...It's gonna be okay." She looked up at him, her eyes more full of pain than he thought was possible for a single person.

"Make it stop...Nick. Please make it stop!" she whispered.

"I can't...I'm sorry," he said hoarsely.

Nick could never have imagined that any dream could be as terrifying as this one. The strange thing was, if he told anyone about it, they wouldn't understand. It really didn't seem so scary. Pretty mild, in fact. But, if anyone else could hear the evil in that voice, in that laugh, or feel the terror of being as completely vulnerable as he and Sky had been in the dream, they would understand.

"Why us? I don't understand! Why is all of this happening to the two of us? Have we been chosen or something?" Sky asked.

"I wish I could answer all of your questions, but I can't. I only know what you know," Nick replied.

Brian walked out into the hallway where Sky and Nick were. "What's going on?" he asked, rubbing his eyes, trying to adjust to the light.

"Bri, you will never be able to understand what we just saw, or, really, what Sky just saw," Nick said.

"Are you guys okay?" Brian asked.

"We will be...come on, Sky," Nick said, putting his arm around her, as he walked with her and Brian into their hotel room.
