"Nickolas, where the hell is my makeup bag?" Katie screamed to Nick, who was eating breakfast in the living room.
"I don't know!" he screamed back, "Sorry to let you in on this but I don't wear makeup and I don't really care about it!"
"Oh shut up!" she told him.
He chuckled to himself. Nick and Katie had been together for over a year and a half and he had recently asked her to marry him. They planned on getting married in about 2 months. Katie was the kind to be bitchy when she wasn't happy or when she didn't get what she wanted, so you could say that she was a spoiled brat. But under all that, she was very sweet and loving, and she treated Nick right...or that's what he'd tell everyone at least. None of Nick's friends actually liked Katie, especially Isabelle, because they knew she was no good for him and that he could do so much better. But they respected the fact that he loved her and he wanted to marry her. Nick and Isabelle had been best friends for over 5 years now, and they had always loved each other, they just never did anything about it. And when Katie came into the picture, Isabelle knew she was too late. But a couple of months earlier, Isabelle had revealed her feelings for Nick, telling him she was in love with him and always had been since the day they met. He was shocked at the moment, but later told her he felt the exact same way. But of course he couldn't do anything about it since he wanted to keep his commitment to Katie. They had told each other that they wouldn't be doing anything about their love though, they were obviously soul mates, but somehow, they felt they had to find someone else, or that's what Nick thought. Isabelle was still secretly waiting for him, even though she promised him she'd move on. The truth is...she never did move on and she never would, she didn't wanna move on. She loved him and she wanted to be with him. She knew Katie was no good for him and as much as she'd try telling him that, he just wouldn't listen. He'd use the excuse that she only wanted him and that she wanted Katie out of the picture. But that wasn't true, she didn't mind whether he moved in with Katie or not, she just wanted him to be with someone who treated him like the guy he was, not someone that treated him like shit.
"Nick, are you ready to go?" Katie asked, walking into the living room.
"Ready for what?" he questioned, taking another bite of his pancake.
"Ah man, don't tell me you forgot!" she bitched at him, "WE were supposed to go to my parents’ house for the afternoon."
"Um... You were supposed to go, not me. I told you I didn't wanna go." he said.
"No Nick, you're coming whether you like it or not." she told him, throwing him a decent pair of pants and a t-shirt.
"Katie, I said I wasn't going, and I'm not going. I already have plans." he said, putting his clothes aside on the couch.
"Damn it Nick, why do you always do this to me?" she asked.
"I never do anything...I just don't feel like going there with you today, ok?" he said.
"Fine asshole, I don't need you anyway!" she said, taking her car keys and leaving to go to her parents’ house. He just rolled his eyes at how ridiculous she was being. He was used to being called names by her that way. Especially asshole, that was her favourite. When he was done eating breakfast, he jumped in the shower. He put his clothes on -the ones Katie had thrown him- and decided to call Isabelle to see if she wanted to do something today. Sure he had told Katie he had plans, but he didn't, he just wanted her to stop bitching at him. Anyway, he was planning on doing something with Isabelle. He picked up the phone and dialed her number.
"Hello?" she asked half asleep.
"Hey Isabelle, it's Nick. Did I wake you up?" he asked.
"Yeah, but don't you always?" she laughed.
"Yeah ok, you've got a point" he said, "I was wondering if you wanted to do something today?"
"Uh yeah, sure." she replied, "Just let me get ready."
"I'll leave you 30 minutes, and then I'm coming over." he told her.
"But I gotta take my shower..." she whined.
"Exactly, it'll make you hurry up." he laughed.
"But... I can't... ah never mind." she said.
"Hehe, but you love me so it's all good." he giggled.
"Yeah whatever, just don't giggle!" she shook her head, "See you in a bit."
"Alright, bye." he said.
They hung up their phones and thirty minutes later, as promised, Nick was at her door.
"Ooh, you're ready." he said once she opened the door and let him in.
"Well I hurried up, and I even ate breakfast!" she smiled.
He gave her a hug, "Why don't I see you as often anymore?"
"Because of Katie... that's why" she told him honestly.
"Yeah I know, ever since we've been engaged she's been so demanding and stuff, and it's like I don't have a life anymore..." he said, sitting down on the couch.
"Well Nick, if you feel like your life is being so demanded by her, why don't you just leave her?" she asked.
"I love her." he simply said.
"That's always your excuse, try telling me something else." she told him.
"Anyway, let's just change the subject." he said quickly.
"No Nick, I wanna talk about this. Just listen for a minute. Ok now, we're in love, right?" she asked and he nodded, "I can treat you right, I can treat you like Nick, and that's what I wanna do. Nick, I know I promised you I'd move on and I tried, but the truth is, I don't wanna move on, I love you and I wanna be with you more than anything. Just leave her and be with me, you'll appreciate your life more, you'll actually be enjoying your life."
"I know Isabelle, but it's harder than you think..." he said.
"Tell me how much harder it is than I think." she told him.
"Well I don't wanna leave her, I don't wanna break a commitment that way..." he explained.
"So Nick, you're just staying with her cuz you don't wanna break a commitment like that?" she asked in disbelief.
He nodded, "I'm pathetic I know, but I care for her."
"Do you love her more than you love me?" she asked, looking him deep in the eyes.
"That's not fair, you can't ask me a question like that..." he said, quickly turning his head away.
"Nick, I want you to answer me." she said, taking his chin and turning his head until he was looking at her again.
"You're Isabelle, she's Katie, you two are very different..." he said.
"You're not answering my question." she told him.
"You really wanna know?" he asked and she nodded, "I love you more, it'll always be you, Isabelle... no one else."
"Then why don't you be with me?" she asked him.
"I already told you." he replied.
"Oh yeah, you don't wanna break a commitment that big." she said, imitating him from before.
She got up from the couch and started walking towards the kitchen when he stopped her. He took her arm and pulled her to him until their lips were just about an inch apart. He slowly placed his lips onto hers and kissed her softly, but the kiss became much more deeper than either had intended. They wrapped their arms around each other as he led her to her bedroom and laid her carefully on her bed. He laid on top of her, pressing his body against hers as the kiss deepened.
"Nick..." she started, pushing him away but he only kissed her again, "Nick, we can't do this."
"Why not?" he asked, sitting up beside her.
"Because it's not right, you're with Katie..." she replied.
"Can't we just forget about her for a bit? I want you..." he said, kissing her neck.
"No Nick." she said pushing him away although she was tempted to kiss him.
"Fine." he said, sliding to the edge of the bed and staying there.
"Listen Nick, you can't have us both. It's either me or her." she said seriously.
"I have to choose?" he asked, and she nodded, "I knew it would come to this and that's why I've been thinking about it a lot lately."
"Well Nick, I hate to make you pick, but it's obvious that you do need to make this decision whether you like it or not..." she told him.
"I know...just give me a little time. I promise I'll think about it." he said.
"Ok" she said.
He decided to go home since they both agreed that right now things were too awkward and too complicated.
"I'll call you later tonight." he said as he walked out the door.
She nodded, "Take your time thinking about this, cuz God knows you need to make the right decision."
"Yeah..." was all he said before he went home.
Later that night, after supper, Nick was playing video games when Katie came back home.
"Hey." she said as she plopped down on the couch beside him.
"Hi." he replied.
"What did you do today?" she asked.
"Nothing, my plans got canceled." he said.
"Argh..." she sighed as if she was annoyed by him.
"Well, what do you want from me?" he snapped.
She was surprised by his sudden change of attitude, "What's up with you?"
"Nothing, I've just been thinking a whole lot lately." he told her.
"About what?" she asked.
"Us..." he replied and immediately got uncomfortable.
"Huh?"
"Katie, there's someone else." he said, not wanting this conversation to go on forever.
"What?!"
"I'm in love with someone else, and I wanna be with her, not you." he said.
"What the hell?!" she asked confused.
"You heard me." he replied.
"Yeah I did, and that's just too bad because I'm in love with someone else too and I've been cheating on you with him" she said snobbish.
He looked at her and found himself not caring at all that she had been cheating on him, "and your point...?"
"Argh" she yelled in disbelief, "I was planning on moving in with him next week and breaking up with you before that."
"Well now it's done, we both got what we wanted." he said as she threw him the engagement ring he had given her.
"I'll be moving out tomorrow, I'll get men to pack my stuff." she said simply.
"Fine by me." he shrugged.
It was weird how they didn't care about breaking everything off. They both ended up with getting what they wanted. Katie with her other lover, and Nick was gonna be with Isabelle finally. He quickly drove over to Isabelle's house and ran up to her apartment door, knocking like crazy.
"Nick? What's the hurry?" she asked opening the door.
"This..." he said as he walked in and kissed her passionately.
"What's going on?" she asked confused, but yet hopeful that he had done something.
"Me and Katie are over, it turns out she's been cheating on me with this other guy for some time now and she was gonna move in with him next week and break up with me anyway, but I broke it off just now. We both ended up getting what we wanted...and I want you" he told her.
"For once Nickolas, you've made the right choice about relationships," she smiled jokingly, "I'm glad you finally came to me."
"I'm glad I finally got my senses back together." he smiled also.
"I love you." she said, hugging him.
"I love you too." he said, hugging her back.
They kissed, him leading her to her bedroom once again to finish what they had started earlier that day.
