Chapter 28

The loud pounding on the door sent Nick to fly out of bed while grabbing his head with both his hand and screeching out, "What the hell is that sound?"

"Uhh…the door?" Ro-Ena chuckled under her breath while pulling the covers over her bare back and closing her eyes again to continue her sleep, as the door continued to bang. "Are you going to get that?"

"Do I have a choice?" Nick grumbled while putting on his robe to cover himself up and headed for the front door, letting out a disgruntled yawn while he ran his fingers through his head of hair. "I’m coming," he said softly as the door continues to be banged on. "I SAID I’M COMING!!!" he screamed out in sheer frustration.

As he finally reached the front door, he pulled it open to find a police officer standing high and mighty, his hand in mid-air ready to give another strike against the wooden door. "Can I help you?" Nick asked while rubbing his face.

"Do you know a Theresa Saunders?" the officer asked straightforwardly

"Reese…uh…yeah…yeah she’s uh…she’s my friend. Why?"

"When was the last time you’ve seen Ms. Saunders?" the officer continued his question, completely ignoring Nick’s own question.

"Uh…a couple…a couple of days ago, maybe…is...she alright?"

The officer ignored Nick’s question once more and followed it with another question of his own. "When was the last time you had any contacts with Ms. Saunders?"

"Yes…yesterday, actually...well sort of. She and I were supposed to meet to go to dinner. She never showed up, so I went to her place to see if she was there. I wanted to make sure she was alright. When I got to her place, there was a note on her front door for me saying that she flew to New York to help a friend out"

"Friend from New York?" the officer curled his eyebrows and looked at Nick

"Yeah…look, what is going on?"

"Is this friend from New York happen to be this man right here?" the officer pulled out a 3x6 picture and handed it to Nick to examine. "William Janik?"

"William Jan…that…that’s not William Janik!"

"Is that Ms. Saunders’ friend, sir?"

Nick began to stammer in his words. "Yes…I mean no…I mean…Reese…Reese has a friend named William Janik in New York, yes, but that’s not him! I’ve seen the guy!! Hell, I’ve talked to the guy and this isn’t him! This is…that’s…he’s…"

"Do you recognize this guy? Is the person in the picture familiar to you?"

"I…" Nick took one deep breath and continued, "Please tell me if Reese is okay or not?"

"Ms. Saunders is considered missing as of right now. From the information that we have gathered, we have every reason to believe that Mr. Janik, the man on the picture, has something to do with her sudden disappearance."

"She’s…she’s in New York!"

"We have called this William Janik character in New York and according to the owner of the building, Janik rented from, he has moved here in Toronto, since the beginning of the summer" informed the officer.

"What?" question marks and confusion began to flutter inside Nick, not knowing what to think or what to say. Where is Reese?,/i> was the only sentence that made sense to him. The more important thing to figure out was the answer to that question, and Nick doesn't know where to start to get what he needed in order for him to conform safely and peacefully. But from his gutted feeling, it seemed as if Nick had walked into a nightmare and there was no way out whatsoever.
