Chapter 21

Darkness monopolize the entire atmosphere environment. The light of the moon and the stars was not enough to chase away the darkness. All was still and calm. Silence. But amidst the spaces where the light's presence was not welcome crept the things many people fear of but believe to be unreal. They are the nightmares and the fears of the inner soul. All was silent. All was dark.

The moonlight, somewhat pale and weak against the heavy darkness of the night sky, shone through the opened window of the hotel room. It was the only thing that provided light in the darkened bedroom where Ro-Ena and Nick slept in each other's arms. Silence filled the darkness while the two were in a deep trance of slumber. The wind blew out its cold autumn air through the window as the thin curtain danced along each blow carelessly but, all at the same time, magnificently.

Nick suddenly felt the cold air run down his spine. He felt his body shiver a little as he shifted his body around, taking his arms off around Ro-Ena and pulling the covers up to his chin. He laid flat on his back while both his hands clasped the blanket to keep it mobile over his shirtless body.

The heat from Ro-Ena's body was no longer reminiscent beside him. In that instant, he returned back to the same old feeling of him sleeping alone. He was used to it and the return to the old ways sent a somewhat reassuring feeling to him. Deep inside his subconscious, the small movement of moving away from Ro-Ena made it seem like things were back to normal. That his biggest worries once again revolved on how he was going to win the small friendly argument he was going to engage in with Reese the following morning. Or whether he was going to wear a hat to school or not. Or whether he would be visiting his the family and friends he left behind in Tampa, Florida: his hometown.

How can one small unconscious movement of running away from the shivering cold have so much symbolism? What if it was the opposite? What if only in his sleep would things seem normal? What if any other time from that would mean the eruption of chaos and problematic situations?

Even in his subconscious, he learned how to worry. A small frown was drawn across his face, with his eyes still closed and his mind still escaped in a tryst with his dreams...or maybe it was a tryst with his darkened nightmares?
