Chapter 18

Nick drove intently in his car on his way back to his hotel room, while in his mind Reese’s words played in a loop over and over. "What if Reese was right?" he argued in his head. "What if he was there but got out at the last minute before the elevator door opened? What if Ro-Ena was in fact scared for a reason and that reason wasn’t just a momentary lapse of fluster?" The hint of realism within the list of possibilities that he had brainstormed sent a rushing feel of quiver within him.

He stepped on the gas pedal of his car to increase speed. He wanted to get to his hotel as quickly as he could. Jay knew where Ro-Ena was and the thought of having her by herself in the room will give Jay a lot of possibilities to continue on with his plan for Ro-Ena’s demise. "He knows where she is…what if he never left? What if he’s lingering around in the dark waiting for the right moment to strike? The right moment when Ro-Ena is alone and no one can come to her aid or hear her scream or do anything at all?"

Nick started hitting on the honk of his car as the cars in front of him decreased in speed for no reason. "Come on!" he screamed while allowing his car honk to blare over and over. "MOVE!!" he yelped frustratingly and signalled for the driver in the car to hurry up but he was unsuccessful as the driver ignored his plea of increasing speed. Nick glanced at the watch he was wearing that showed the time of 6:27, a time that states the road is amidst the rush-hour traffic and he knew that the road ahead will only present to him an even longer traffic and a lot of red illuminations from the traffic lights. Nick roamed his eyes around the road ahead of him and spotted a turn up ahead. Desperate of finding alternate ways that will permit him to get to his destination as quickly as he could, he shifted lanes and headed for the turn and took the road.

The road he entered was remote and dark enough that he was unable to see the signs that states the street name. Nick had regretted of taking that road but it was too late for him to turn back around. He figured if he could just continue to drive on, eventually it would lead him back into a major road. "Going back to the main road only means getting stuck in a massive traffic jam!" he convinced himself.

Out of nowhere, the feeling of fatigue suddenly over-filled Nick. His eyes began to feel as if each lid weighed 10 pounds. "Useless coffee!!!" he cursed at the ineffectiveness of the caffeine he was drinking at the restaurant. He reached for the button to turn on the radio and blasted on a rock song, hoping it will help him escape his sleepiness, but it didn’t do its justice. Nick’s head began to bob as he tried to prevent himself from falling asleep. He continued to look ahead as he increased his speed once more. Within seconds, he managed to catch a glimpse of the end of the road which was signified a new road that started across it. It was the main road and if he could just make it through there, the lights and the visions of stores beside other stores and cars passing along him will wake him up.

He allowed his eyes to close for a second hoping to rejuvenate him, but that was not the case. A pair of cold hands reached around his neck from behind and began to strangle him. Nick’s airway was blocked as he began to gasp. Out of initial response, he stepped quickly on the brake pedal, sending his car to come to a full stop in the middle of the road.

The cold hands kept its tight grip around his neck. He reached his hand up trying with all his might to take the grip off of around his neck as he tried to shift his eyes at the rear-view mirror hoping to see the face of the person behind him. All he saw was a dark silhouette of a figure behind him continuing to strangle him without even showing off a sense of slowing down or taking off the grip that was held around his neck as the force pinned Nick against the seat of the car.

The person behind him was too strong for him as Nick was unsuccessful of taking the grasp off of him. He began to sway his arms around hoping to grab hold of anything to use as a weapon but he couldn’t get a hold on to anything. He suddenly jerked his right foot and pressed hard on the gas pedal then swiftly pressing on the brake pedal sending the person behind him in a disarrayed movement, finally letting go of the grasp around Nick’s neck. Nick began to cough as he quickly tried to regain back the oxygen he had lost. He unbuckled himself from the seatbelt while running out of the vehicle. His anger had build up to its fullness as he reached for the handle on the door on the back seat and swung it open, ready for avenge. As the side door swung opened, Nick found the back of his vehicle empty. He looked through his entire vehicle: empty. Nick looked around and under the car only to realize that there was nobody there but him.

"How can one person move that fast?" he questioned himself as he massaged his throat, still feeling the stinging pain from his current experience. Nick shifted his eyes again from side to side to make sure that he really was alone. All that really surrounded him were darkness and the chilly air of the autumn weather, nothing or no one else.

He went back inside his vehicle, but before buckling himself with the seatbelt, he checked once more to make sure he was alone in the vehicle then clicked the lock button on. Nick vigorously stepped on the gas pedal as the tires of his vehicle made a screeching sound, and he continued to speed down the road, even more of in a hurry to get to Ro-Ena as quickly as he could.
