Chapter 9

The sun was out and the birds were chirping away on a Tuesday morning but for Riley, things seemed dim. She had just gotten a notification from the superintendent of the building she resides in about getting evicted if she doesn’t hand over the last two of the rental payments she had missed, as well as the coming up one. The following notification was another payment due for her telephone bill. “That’s a grand total of…” Riley deprecatingly said as she totalled the final sum she owed to both the building’s superintendent and the telephone company, “…$3,215…flat! If money could only grow on trees,” she hoped as she slumped the side of her face on the cold wooden table in front of her while gazing over to where Uriel happily fluttered around in his cage. “You should count your lucky stars Uriel, you’re not burdened with the stuff us humans have to endure. You can just simply flutter your wings away with no worries!”

After a few minutes of wishful thinking of what it would be like to be like Uriel, Riley regained her focus on the papers scattered around in front of her as she rummaged through it and finally reaching for the want-ads in a newspaper. “Alright let’s see what we have here,” she sighed, trying to keep her hopes up while fingering down the long lists of possible jobs, all in which she is under qualified for. When all hopes seemed dim and Riley was ready to throw away the want ads and call it quits for the day, she spotted a small job advertisement in the corner of the page. “Wanted: A full-time housecleaner who can cook, full-time. 4 bedroom house, 3 full baths and 2 half bathrooms, a pool house, 2 living rooms, 1 family room, 1 game room. Required: someone who is willing to work live-in. Salary: starting offer: $2,500 per month,” Riley read aloud, “Not bad,” she said while reaching for the telephone as she began to dial the number of the ad to get an interview right away. “Hello? Hi, uh…I saw your advertisement on the want ads and I was wondering if the position is still open? It is? Great! Yeah, I would love to come down for an interview…I really don’t have much priorities right now so I can come down whenever it is most inconvenient for you…today? Uh…yeah sure, just give me the address and I’ll come down as soon as I can…okay…okay…yeah I’m pretty sure I won’t have much trouble finding it. Thank you so much! See you soon…bye!”

Hanging up the phone, Riley couldn’t help but jump around in celebration of her landing an interview. Out of breath, she finally stops while making her way into her bedroom to get dressed for the interview. With no idea of what was in store for her, Riley can only hope that this was the beginning of something good finally happening to her.
