Chapter 37

Nick looked at the person that stood in front of him, as he searched for the right words he needed to say to her, but despite of how hard he looked for it deep within him, he couldn’t. All he could do was to look deep within her eyes, all he had to follow from was her words: to look deep within her eyes and find the truth inside there. “It really is you, isn’t it?” he said softly

She delicately smiled at Nick while nodding her head revealing the answer of, “yes.”

Nick’s confused-filled face took a shift of change into a more relieved expression, as he leaned closer to her and eventually giving her a long and passionate kiss.

When the two of them pulled away, their face leaned on one another as Nick whispered, “I never thought I’d ever see you again, Riley! I missed you so much, I missed you more than you’ll ever know!”

“I didn’t think I’d see you either, Nick,” she said.

Nick suddenly pulled away. “What happened?”

“Is that so important right now?” Riley smiled

Nick looked deep into her eyes, “What happened?”

Riley hesitated of answering Nick’s question as she made a small gesture of discomfort upon spotting Jane standing at the foot of the door of Nick’s house, arms crossed and a bit of angered disbelief mixed with panicked desperation written all over her face. “I don’t think I can stay,” she whispered while allowing her head to drop as she felt pain from the words that had escaped her own lips.

Nick took hold of both sides of her shoulder, “What do you mean you can’t stay?” he said, half angry, half disheartened. “Then why the hell did you come back?”

“I…I don’t know, Nick! I don’t know!” she said. “I wasn’t planning on…all of this. It was not part of the plan! None of it was, it just…it was just unfortunate that you went to that same party last night,” Riley reasoned while throwing her hands up in the air, trying to find the right words she needed to make Nick understand.

“Unfortunate? You think it’s unfortunate that we met up again last night?” Nick said as fury began to build up inside of him. “Riley, I…you call it unfortunate, I call it destiny! I mean, don’t you see? We’re…we’re meant to be together! Whatever it was that tried to tear us apart, it obviously wasn’t strong enough because here you are!” he reasoned while pulling her close to him and giving her a gentle kiss, trying desperately to sway Riley into staying and not leaving.

Riley hesitated and pulled away.

“Riley, come on!”

“I just have to know one thing,” she said softly. “Would things have been much different if I looked like this from the very first time that we met?”

“What do you mean?”

“Would the outer image change the inner image?”

“Riley, what happened?” he begged for an answer that will cease his curiosity. “I’m begging you, please tell me!”

Riley looked up deep into Nick’s eyes and allowed him to look into tear-filled eyes
