Riley’s old Chevy Cavalier pulled up a house that had a 20 feet high white-gated fence. She reached up to the driveway as she buzzed on the intercom. “Who is it?” a male voice retorted out. “Uh…I think I’m uhm…expected…I have an interview regarding a job?” Riley said nervously. The 20-feet high gate slowly let out a rending sound as it slowly began to open, making way for Riley to pull up her car into the driveway.
Upon reaching the spot where she could park her car, she found herself in front of a huge beautiful house with a Victorian style engraved on the outside and a huge green lawn with a small swing set normally used for romantic reveries between two lovers or just a way of relaxing. Riley slowly walked up to the door, still appreciating the beauty that was presented in front of her. She reached for the doorbell while continuing to gape at the wonders and beauty of the house. After a few seconds, the door finally opened only to reveal a familiar face. “Oh my gosh,” Riley called out when she found herself standing in front of a figure whom she never knew she would ever see again.
“You’re here for the interview?”
“Uh…I…I guess,” Riley stammered
Nick laughed out in disbelief, “Isn’t this coincidental!” he retorted while making way for Riley to come inside. “Come on in and follow me back to the den, don’t bother taking your shoes off,” he instructed.
Riley walked inside and was greeted by a spacious open room with wooden floors. On one side, there were a set of burgundy colored couches and a small black shiny piano, while on the other side, a stairs that lead upstairs was found.
Nick led Riley down a few steps as they enter a different set of room. It had white marbled tiles for its floors; it was yet another open space with a single white corner couch on one curve and a small beige marble table in front of it. On another side, a small arch carved out of the wall and through it, it gave access to see whatever it is that will be going on in the kitchen.
On another side, there was a floor to ceiling; wall to wall glass sliding doors with white see-through curtains that seemed to dance with the wind as it blows in.
Nick slid one of the doors opened while signalling Riley to walk out on. Riley followed his instruction and found herself standing in a spacious wooden balcony that overlooks a vast waterfront view. The balcony itself had a patio set placed on the other half of it. “Have a seat,” Nick bellowed at her. “I had made some orange juice and some cookies and biscuits, so help yourself,” he said while allowing himself to sit in front of Riley while pulling out a green folder and opening it up to reveal a few paperwork. “You want to get started?” he asked.
“Yeah sure,” Riley stammered out, still in awe of the house that seemed like a paradise to her.
“Well basically what I’m looking for is someone who can maintain the house,” Nick started explaining. “As you can tell, it’s a big house and I just need someone to help me out. I don’t expect you to clean it all yourself. Someone actually comes once a week to do an overall clean-up of the house, I just need you to help me maintain it. We will basically split up the house chores. I still like to think that this is still my house and I want to give a hand in maintaining my own house,” he expressed seriously.
“Okay,” Riley nodded while pulling out her resume from the shoulder bag she had on with her and handing it over to Nick.
Nick took the resume and skimmed through it as he continued, “I also need someone to do the cooking, mostly the supper meals. I don’t do any cooking at all, I’m not very well-skilled in that area,” he grimaced as he settled Riley’s resume down on the table. “Do you have any questions thus far?”
“Actually yeah, by full-time live-in…what exactly did you mean by that?” she asked while curling her eyebrows.
“Meaning I’m going to need you to live here. I will provide for you a room of your own, and just for future reference and in case the question arises, no, I will not deduct that from your salary; that along with your food and other needs. I’ll provide that for you.”
“Is there anyone else that lives here?”
“No, I’m the only one, so you don’t really have to worry about serving anyone. Your job is to just basically maintain and cook and any spare time in between, you’re more than welcome to do anything you want, in, around or out of the house.”
“And the starting salary is…?”
“Well I’m willing to compromise at $2,500 a month, with a payment of every 15 days, that okay with you?” he asked
“Uh…yeah…I guess if…yeah, I’d love to have this job!” Riley said bluntly.
“When can you start?” Nick bellowed
“When do you want me to start?”
“As soon as possible, if that’s okay with you”
“Yeah sure…oh one other thing, I have a bird and…”
Without letting Riley finish her sentence, “Yeah that’s fine, you can bring your bird along”
“Great,” Riley smiled while reaching for her glass of orange juice and taking a sip from it. Somehow she a huge weight lifted off her shoulders, as she knew she no longer needs to worry about scraping to make ends meet. For once, things seemed to have been going right. She needn’t longer worry about making rental payments since Nick had provided for her. She couldn’t help but wonder if Nick was an angel sent down from heaven for her. “Things are finally looking up!” she sighed to herself.
