Chapter 19

Nick stormed into the lobby of the hospital and went up to the front desk.

"Where's Adri?" Nick demanded.

"Mr. Carter, you're not supposed to be here." the nurse at the front desk said.

Nick continued, "I don't care. I wanna see my girlfriend right now."

The nurse sighed, "If it were up to me, I'd let you see Adrianne. Lord knows she needs you. but we've been given specific orders not for you to see her anymore. Look, if you leave right now, I won't tell anyone you were here."

Nick was so angry and frustrated that he started to cry. The nurse saw this and felt really bad for him.

The nurse shook her head, "I could get fired for this - Adrianne's in the ICU Unit, room 200. You take the elevator up to the fourth floor, then turn right and go down the hall until you get to the corner. Then, turn left and you're there."

Nick smiled, "Thank you so much. You have no idea what this means to me."

The nurse replied, "You're welcome. But, if anyone asks, you didn't find out from me."

Nick followed the nurses directions and went to where Adrianne was. He braced himself as he opened the door and entered the room. Nick practically broke down and cried when he saw Adrianne.

Adrianne laid in bed motionless. She was hooked up to several different machines. The heart monitor beeped steadily. Adrianne's left wrist was all bandaged up.

Nick sat down in the chair next to the bed. He gently placed his hand on top of Adrianne's hand.

"Hi, Adri" Nick said softly, "It's me. I'm so sorry. I shouldn't have left you that day. It's all my fault. I should've fought harder to get to you. I don't care what anyone says, I'm not leaving you ever again. I love you. That's why you gotta wake up. Please wake up. I need you."

Nick leaned forward and kissed her cheek. He then heard the door open. Nick looked up and saw a doctor.

Nick stood up, "I don't care if you call the cops. I'm not leaving her."

"I don't expect you to." the doctor said.

Nick was shocked, "Really? Wait a sec... you're not Adri's doctor."

"I am now." the doctor said, "I'm Dr. West.

Adrianne's doctor before me was fired, because we found out he was using electric shock on patients, including Adrianne."

"Is she gonna be ok?" Nick asked.

Dr. West sighed, "I'll be honest with you, it doesn't look good. Adrianne lost a lot of blood. And the longer she's in the coma, the less likely it is that she'll ever wake up."

Nick's eyes filled with tears again, "What am I suppose to do?"

"Just be ther for her." Dr. West said, "Talk to her a lot. Even though she can't respond, Adrianne can still hear everything you say to her." Dr. West checked Adrianne's vitals and then left.

Nick sat back down in the chair near Adrianne's bed and slowly fell asleep.
