“What’s up, Jen? You’ve been acting all weird ever since you came back upstairs,” Elizabeth asked Jenny.
Jenny blushed. “Nothing.”
“Come on. Something’s up. I heard you talking to Nick.” Jenny blushed harder at the mention of Nick. “It’s Nick, isn’t it?” Elizabeth asked. Jenny told Elizabeth about her run-in with Nick. Elizabeth giggled. “Aw…Does someone have a crush on Nicky?”
“No! Well…Maybe a teeny, tiny one. But that’s all it is, a little crush. Nothing more,” Jenny said.
“Okay. I believe you.”
“Well, I’m gonna call Alex now,” Jenny said.
“Okay,” Elizabeth said.
Jenny picked up the phone and dialed Alex’s number. After a few rings, he answered. “Hello?”
“Hey, sweetie,” Jenny said.
“Oh, hi baby. How are you?”
“I’m good. How are you?” she asked.
“I called to talk to you about something,” Jenny said.
“What?” Alex asked, nervous about what her response would be.
“Heather,” Jenny answered quietly.
“Jen, there’s something I need to tell you,” Alex said.
Jenny swallowed hard, fearing the worst. “Okay.”
Alex took a deep breath. Then her began to tell Jenny about his experience with Heather. Jenny listened quietly until he finished. “I swear, Jenny. I didn’t cheat on you. You have to believe me,” Alex said, almost frantically.
Jenny know he wasn’t lying. “I believe you, Alex.”
“Heather said you’re seeing other guys besides me,” Alex said.
“You don’t believe her, do you?” Jenny asked.
“No,” Alex said. He didn’t sound too sure.
"Alex, I am not cheating on you. I would never do that,” Jenny said.
Alex let out a relieved sigh. “I know, Jenny. I just had to be sure.”
“Alex, I love you. You have to know that,” Jenny said.
“I know, Jenny. I love you, too.”
“So, is everything okay with us?” Jenny asked.
“I think it will be.”
“I hope so.”
“I miss you,” Alex said.
“I miss you, too. I’ll be home in a few days.”
“Okay. I gotta go now, baby. Bye.”
“Bye,” Jenny said and hung up the phone.
Two days later, Jenny returned home to Alex. Elizabeth was sad to see her go, but happy that things between Jenny and Alex were going to be okay.
“So, Nicky, found yourself a girlie yet?” Elizabeth asked. They were sitting outside in the yard enjoying the warm spring day.
Nick looked at her. He still wasn’t completely over her. He wasn’t about to tell her that, though. “No…To tell you the truth, Lizzie, I’m not really looking for a girlfriend right now.”
“That’s cool,” Elizabeth said.
Two months later, Elizabeth was out of school for summer vacation. She was enjoying her seventeenth birthday. Nick and Brian were throwing her a party at Nick’s house. The party had been going for nearly three hours. Elizabeth received a lot of cool presents from everyone. The stereo was on and everyone was dancing.
“Let’s go to the beach,” Brian said to Elizabeth. Elizabeth agreed and fifteen minutes later, they were walking along the beach. Brian stopped walking and turned to Elizabeth. “Lizzie, there’s something I gotta ask you,” Brian said.
“Okay,” Elizabeth said.
“I love you so much, Lizzie. You’re the only one I wanna spend the rest of my life with. I wanna see your beautiful face every night before I go to sleep and wake up beside you every morning. Elizabeth, will you marry me? Will you be my wife?” Brian asked, looking into her eyes.
Elizabeth’s breath caught in her throat. She was speechless. Brian looked at her with those big blue eyes of his and her heart melted. “Yes, Brian. I will marry you,” Elizabeth said, finally finding her voice. He pulled the velvet ring box out of his pocket. He opened it, revealing a gold ring with a heart shaped diamond. Brian took it out of the box and slipped it on Elizabeth’s finger.
“Oh, Brian! It’s so beautiful!” Brian smiled and pulled her close to him. He hugged her tightly and then kissed her. “Brian, I wanna wait a few years before we get married. I don’t wanna rush things,” Elizabeth said.
Brian nodded. “I don’t wanna rush things, either. I just want to know for sure that we’re always going to be together and I wanna be able to say that you are my future wife,” he said with a sweet smiled.
Elizabeth smiled. “You are so sweet, Brian. I love you so much.”
“I love you, too, Lizzie. I can’t wait until our life together begins,” Brian said, wrapping his arms around her.
“The way I see it,” Elizabeth said. “It already has.”
