Two weeks later, Elizabeth was living with the Carters. Her room was right next to Nick’s. It was weird living in the same house as Nick. She was finding it hard to think of Nick as her brother. She still wasn’t sure what her exact feelings for Nick were.
Jane and Bob had agreed to let Jenny stay with Elizabeth for a week over her spring break. Elizabeth was really excited to see Jenny again. She had never really had any female friends. It was nice to have a girl to talk to about certain things.
“So, had that Heather girl tried anything with Alex yet?” Elizabeth asked. They were hanging out in Elizabeth’s room doing a little catching up.
“Not really…She just insults me and flirts with Alex,” Jenny answered.
“Does Alex flirt back?”
“Lizzie, you know Alex, he’s a big flirt. He does it so much, he doesn’t even realize it. But actually, now that I think about it, he doesn’t really flirt with her. I don’t think he likes her.”
“Then you have nothing to worry about,” Elizabeth concluded.
“Yes, I do. I’m not there. I don’t know what’s happening.”
“Come on, Jen. Alex loves you. There’s no way he would ever cheat on you,” Elizabeth said.
“I hope you’re right.”
Alex rang the doorbell to Heather’s house. He didn’t want to be there, but she said it was an emergency. Heather answered the door wearing a short, revealing black dress. “Hi, Alex,” she said.
“What’s the emergency, Heather?” Alex asked.
She grabbed his arm and pulled him inside then shut the door. “This,” she said. She pushed him against the wall and kissed him hard. He was completely surprised by her actions and strength. When he regained his senses, he pushed her away.
“Come on, Alex. You know you want me…” Heather said, rubbing up against him.
Alex moved away. “I don’t want you, Heather. I already have a girlfriend that I love. You need to accept that.”
“Oh, I accept that you’re seeing a little girl. I just don’t respect it.”
Heather moved to kiss Alex again, but he moved away. “Dammit, Heather! I don’t like you! Get that through your thick head! I have a girlfriend!”
“You don’t think you’re her only guy, do you?” Heather laughed.
“What are you talking about?” Alex asked, not liking where this conversation was heading.
“She’s probably out with another guy right now.”
“Whatever. You don’t know anything about Jenny,” Alex said. He turned and walked out the door. Jenny would never cheat on me, would she? Alex asked himself as he walked back to his house.
“Alex wouldn’t cheat on me, would he?” Jenny asked no one in particular.
“Jenny, you are gonna have to talk to Alex and work this whole thing out. It’s not gonna get better till you do,” Elizabeth said.
“You’re right…Should I call him now?”
“You can if you want.”
“I think I will, but I’m gonna get something to drink first,” Jenny said, standing up. Jenny walked out of the room and ran smack into Nick, who was coming out of his room. She fell flat on her butt.
“Oh, my God, Jenny. I’m so sorry,” Nick said.
“It was my fault, too,” Jenny said as he helped her up.
“But still…” Nick said.
Their eyes met and they both stood there looking at each other. Jenny broke the gaze by blinking several times. “Uh…It’s okay, Nick,” Jenny said a little nervously. “I gotta go.”
“Yeah, me, too,” Nick said.
Jenny took off down the stairs. She felt Nick’s eyes follow her as she went. That was so weird, she thought. It was like I couldn’t look away from his eyes. What going on with me? She wondered. She sighed heavily as she grabbed a can of Dr. Pepper out of the refrigerator. She headed back upstairs and hoped she wouldn’t run into Nick again.
