"I don't know...Why would I come all the way up to Harvard when it's still cold there, while here in North Carolina it's nice and warm. Hmm." Emily contemplated while resting her face on her hand. Emily was sitting on her bed in her dorm stretched out with an Organic Chemistry book open in front of her. She had a huge test later that day, but decided that talking to Deanna was more important. Spring Break was only a week away and they still couldn't agree on what to do. They both knew one thing though, they didn't want to go home for break. Chicago did not sound appealing at that moment, and Emily's parent's being home in North Carolina wasn't much better.
"Oh come on Emily...I know you are sick of wearing shorts EVERY day of your life. Come up here. You haven't been up here since I moved in. It will be fun. I'll show you around to all the cool places I have found." Deanna pleaded. She had spent all summer down in North Carolina, it was about time Emily was the visitor. "My roommate Danica is going home for break, so you wouldn't even have to get a hotel."
"I guess...but what about Ryan? I can't just leave him here." Emily discussed. Emily had met Ryan at the end of last semester, right around finals. They went on a few dates when sparks started to fly. They had been dating for about a month.
"Yeah, I forgot about him. I can't believe you're actually dating again. I didn't think you'd ever start up again after J-," Deanna paused catching herself. They both didn't like talking about what had happened last summer. Every once in awhile, one of them got a call or a letter from them, but nothing big. All four of them believed that if they were really meant to be together, that fate would bring them back together someday. "I mean, well you know."
"I know. It was hard, but Ryan is really nice. But I should say the same for you. You went through the same thing! What ever happened with...what was his name...Bryan?" Emily fought back. The two continued discussing Deanna's relationship for awhile, when Deanna finally glanced at her brown and black watch.
"Oh shit! I have class in 10 minutes! I can't believe we talked for that long! Okay, I have to go. Calculus. What fun... Make plane reservations for both you and Ryan, we'll get him a hotel if he wants to come. Then call me and leave details about when you need to be picked up. Okay? Bye bye bye!" Deanna laughed.
"That's not funny." Emily frowned, and hung up her baby blue phone. Her blue eyes traveled down the book lying in front of her. Calculating Empirical Formulas. Great. She sighed and pulled out a sheet of paper to start working out some of the study questions.
Abby slapped her Calculus book shut, shoving it in her backpack, starting to sprint across campus. She had a huge test today and was trying to get some last minute studying done. To top it off, she was going to be late if she didn't hurry. Abby glanced down at her watch one more time, realizing she had five minutes to get there. Finally, the red brick building came into her view. Abby made her way into the classroom, watching her breath seep out of her mouth. Her blue-gray eyes searched around the classroom for an empty seat. It was pretty full today, considering there was a test. Eventually her eyes fell upon a seat next to a girl with long, brown hair wearing an orange sweater. Finding her way through the mess of people, she arrived at the empty chair.
"Is this seat taken?" Abby inquired. The girl looked up, and shook her head, acknowledging that no one was sitting there. Abby breathed a sigh of relief, while removing her jacket and set her backpack down. Just as she sat down the professor came to the front of the class and instructed everyone to take out their calculators and a pencil. Scrounging through the bottom of her backpack, Abby's hands clasped on her calculator and removed the pencil from the tiny ponytail she had managed to create. The girl next to her passed her a pile of tests and Abby took one and passed the rest of the pile down the row. "Here goes nothing," she thought to herself.
As she finished her final calculations, Abby made sure to go back and check that everything was right. When she was done, she slowly got to her feet and quietly made her way to the front of the class to turn in the test. While she was walking back to her seat, she saw a small piece of paper lying on the small desk. Abby sat down while opening the piece of paper.
"Have you been in this class all year? I don't recall seeing you last semester. By the way, I'm Deanna." Abby read, before beginning to scribble a note back.
"I started here second semester. It's a long story and not one that I really feel like getting into. I'm Abby." Abby folded the note back up and snuck the note back to Deanna. It was weird, in a way this new person reminded her slightly of Vesteva. A crept on Abby's face as she thought of Vesteva. She was having a blast in college, but she couldn't help feeling as if she was missing a part of her. In one quick swift, the folded piece of paper was back on her desk.
"It's ok, u don't have to tell me about it. Wanna go somewhere after this? Like get some coffee or something...I've been looking for something to do this afternoon." Abby grinned as she read the words, before she wrote back an affirmative answer. That was exactly what she needed. A nice cup of coffee to get her mind off of everything going on.
"Ryan, I didn't invite you up here to do this." Emily complained while pushed Ryan away. They had just come back from dinner on campus and Emily's roommate was going to be gone until tomorrow. The two had come upstairs in order to talk about their Spring Break plans, but Ryan seemed to have a different idea about what he would like to do.
"Awe...Em. Please?" He pleaded with her sticking out his bottom lip, almost making it quiver. She shook her head no, trying not to crack a smile and moved over to her small desk.
"First things first." Emily commanded. She explained what she was planning for over the break. Emily just had to make sure everything was okay with him so she could make hotel reservations and plane tickets for Boston. Ryan agreed to go up there to finally meet Deanna. He had heard so much about her, because Emily talked about her constantly. After everything was settled, Emily made her way back to her small bed and wrapped her arms around Ryan's neck. Her eyes wandered around the room, glancing at the walls that were once covered in posters of *NSYNC. Emily swallowed to keep herself controlled as she thought back to the summer. The tack marks were still there from when she had ripped the posters off one night. Suddenly, it wasn't Ryan she was seeing her arms wrapped around. She saw blond curls and blue eyes, instead of Ryan's straight brown hair and chestnut eyes. Emily closed her eyes. "What is wrong with me?" She thought to herself. "Get over it already."
Vesteva sat down for dinner, ready to discuss her spring break plans with her parents. Abby had called her earlier inviting her up to Boston for the week and Vesteva couldn't refuse. She missed Abby; it was weird not having her around anymore. Call it crazy, but she actually thought she would be by her side forever. Brown curls popped up from under the table and started to giggle. Ves's sister Leehola sat up on the chair, smiling across the table at her older sister. Vesteva couldn't help, but return the smile. Finally, her mom and dad sat down. She took a deep breath and let the plans spill out of her mouth. At first it seemed as if they were going to say no, the way they both glanced at each other. Exchanging those glances that every kid knew meant the answer is "NO", but then her mother smiled.
"I don't see why not. You were up there before to help her move in. This wouldn't be any different. Besides, we trust Abby and you know that." Her mother finished and then started cutting into her chicken. Vesteva jumped up and went to hug her mom and dad, screaming Thank You at the top of her lungs. Then she tore off to a phone to call Abby. The 11-digit long distance number rolled off her fingers as if she did it in her sleep and then phone began to ring. After 3 rings Abby's answering machine picked up.
"Hey, you reached Abby and Kristin's Room. We're not here right now, but leave a message and we'll call you back!" The machine rattled off. Ves waited for the beep and then delivered the great news as fast as she could.
Deanna slowly took a sip of her coffee, making sure it wasn't going to burn her mouth. The warm liquid flowed to her mouth as she tipped the glass and didn't burn her. Tipping the glass more, Deanna took a nice taste of the drink she had ordered at Starbucks. Abby was sitting across from her, completing the same ritual with her hot chocolate. Deanna didn't quite know where to start the conversation. She didn't even know why she had invited her out, she had just met the girl. But there was something about her, some connection she felt that they shared, and didn't know what it was.
"So how do you think you did on the Calculus exam?" Deanna started to make conversation. Abby finished her sip and then answered Deanna.
"Okay I guess. It's so hard to get back into the school mood, since I've been off a semester. It wasn't that hard." Abby responded. The two then shared stories about people in their class and talked about how good they thought the professor was doing his job. The topic then shifted over to where they each were living and they found out that they were staying in the same dorm, just on different floors. Deanna noted that she had briefly met Abby's roommate Kristin at a party awhile back. Finally, the conversation shifted over to their plans for Spring Break.
"Let's see. My friend Emily and her boyfriend are coming up from North Carolina. I'm not exactly sure what we're going to do, but we'll probably just hang out. Go to parties, that kind of thing." Deanna shared with Abby. Abby nodded and then told that her friend Vesteva might be coming up, but she wasn't sure yet. "We're just going to have to get together then. Since we're both staying here. Okay?" Abby nodded and then jotted down her number on a piece of napkin.
