About a half an hour later, JC and I managed to pry Justin from the basketball hoop. Emily had already mastered the shot that Justin was teaching her. JC and I had just sat on a patch of grass nearby and watched the couple.
"Now...for our next surprise..." Emily slurred. She nodded at me and a smile snuck up on my face. We grabbed their hands and dragged them to the Eclipse that was sitting in the driveway. I had specifically asked my brother to leave the car. Relief swept over me as I realized he listened to me for once. Emily slid into the drivers seat and Justin sat beside her. JC and I slumped down in the back seat huddling close. Emily opened her purse and pulled out her second copy of their debut cd and pushed it into the cd player.
"Em...do we have to listen it this?" Justin groaned from beside her.
"I agree. Please turn it off." JC whined as the familiar tune swept through the car. She shook her head quickly and reached for the volume. Justin quickly shot his hand to stop her.
"Look...it doesn't have to blast for us to be able to hear it." Justin protested. Emily finally gave in, but kept it playing softly. We tried to keep conversation throughout the hour ride to our surprise destination, but it wasn't very successful. By the time we reached Chicago, I was asleep on JC's shoulder who was sleeping against the door. The only sounds were the slight rumble of the engine and the murmur of *NSYNC's voices throughout the car.
Car -Emily POV
It was 11 o clock when we pulled into the parking lot, across from Navy Pier. I glanced around the car to find everyone sleeping. My eyes focused on Deanna and JC, laying together. They were so cute. It was so sad they were leaving tomorrow. I then glanced over to Justin who was sleeping soundly against the window. I let out a sigh. What would it be like without him? I would go back to North Carolina and he would go back to Orlando. Sure, we'd call each other, but would it really last? I pushed the thoughts to the back of my mind and slowly reached out to his shoulder. After a slight shake, Justin's blue eyes flew open. He yawned, stretched, and looked around to get his bearings. I met his gaze as a smile crept up on both our faces. This day had to be extra special.
Justin and I finally got Deanna and JC up from the back seat. I grabbed the baby blue jacket I threw in the trunk of the car because the wind was really strong by the lake. I could almost feel the shivers that would be approaching my body very soon. The four of us walked across a couple street until we reached the pier. My eyes stared at the rows of over head arched that lead into the memorable place. Memories of my parents taking me here when I was little flew through my mind. That was all before I went off the college and my parents moved down with me.
I felt someone wrap their arm around my waist and pull me close. I glanced up at Justin who had already slipped some sunglasses and a hat. My gaze shifted over to JC who had also done the same. Why hadn't I thought this was going to happen? What if they got recognized? What a way to ruin a perfect day. All of a sudden Deanna was pulling one way, towards a sign that said something about renting bikes.
There sat about three large bikes. They had a cover on the top, either red, yellow or blue. In the front laid two steering wheels and then the peddles for the four people who could fit onto it. If the person in the front on the right started peddling, then the person in the back on the right had to peddle also.
I really wasn't in the mood to be embarrassed in a city that usually never come to but Deanna was overly excited about it. JC placed his hands on her shoulders, trying to calm her down from jumping around. A family of five took one of the bikes and we watched them take off. Almost running into the gates that said " Navy Pier" on it, they had to abruptly stop and use their feet to back peddle.
" Come on you guys, please? I never come here!" Deanna shouted as she begged the others. Everyone stared at one another with a look like they didn't want to. " It's only 20 dollars! JC, that's so cheap for you. Come on! I know none of you have done this."
After a moment of begging and another bicycle leaving, the three others gave in. JC drove, Justin was in the other front seat and us girls were directly behind our guys. We had to hold on to a bar in front of us while the guys had the steering wheels. Our directions was that we could travel anywhere where there was a yellow line in the road and we had to follow it. We only had an hour.
We began to take off and that's when we found out that peddling wasn't as easy as it looked like. Even though there were four pairs of legs peddling, it was still four bodies that you had to pull in this large bike type thing. JC was directing where to do and Justin was doing it also, at least that's what he thought.
" Hey Em, this isn't as bad as I thought," he turned around, completely forgetting about the wheel in front of him.
" Justin!" Emily screeched.
But as he turned around quickly he saw that the bike was going perfectly straight anyway. Getting curious, he turned his steering wheel all the way to the left, noticing that the bike didn't move at all, except in JC's direction.
" Man! This is cheap! I can't even steer the thing!" Justin yelped with a high squeak.
Deanna and I began laughing in the back, continuing to peddle.
The time was passing as we shared short conversations almost always ending in a short laughing session. It had only been a half an hour, but it seemed as if we had been peddling forever. My muscles in my legs were burning with exhaustion as the bike followed the yellow lined path. We went down a path where we passed a beach and were now on this track that was right below all the traffic and it was a slanted path.
" I'm SO tired, can't we stop for a couple minutes?" Deanna whined in the back, trying to keep her butt on the seat because it was so steep that it was hard to keep yourself on. There were no seat belts, only the bar in front that you had to keep your balance. Deanna lifted her feet up and rested them in the center bar as the peddles kept turning because JC kept peddling.
" Deanna! You have to keep peddling, I can't do it alone over here!" JC screamed, keeping control of the wheel.
" You are the one who does the two hour concerts full of dancing, not me." She replied, keeping her feet on the bar. I giggled a little, then seeing Justin turn around with a smile on his face.
After noticing that Deanna wasn't about to start up again, we stopped and put a little stone beneath the wheels so that it wouldn't go rolling away.
Beach -Emily POV
The four of us sat on the sand watching the waves come crashing onto the shore. There was only one other family there that played in the corner, making a sand castel with their regular clothes on. The beach was small, though the winds were chilly as they blew against our bare legs and arms.
It was so peaceful as I sat in between Justin's legs, with his arms wrapped around my body. I looked up at him and saw the tinted blue glasses shine back down on me while i ran my fingers through his curls. He gave out a little chuckle which only made me sink deeper through the sand in awe.
I glanced over at Deanna who was resting her head with her eyes closed on JC's chest. He was breathing in and out, resting his chin on her slanted head. She looked as if she was about to fall asleep, but I knew that she wouldn't care since she was in JC's arms.
Through all the hard times that both of our relationships have had, it still came out all right. We both thought that everything was going to come to an end in the middle, but we were able to keep the flame lit. It was all a fairy tale, though ending with a said ending.
My eyes wandered back to Lake Michigan and glanced out at the endless blue waters. I wanted to stay here forever. With my mind set on the water, I slowly pulled Justin's hands off my body, settling them down next to him. He glanced down confused as I placed my hands in the sand and slowly stood up. After untying my baby blue Nikes and pulling off my white socks, I ran to the water. Slowing down my pace, I stopped right before my feet could feel the coldness of the lake water. I dipped a foot in and quickly pulled it out, feeling as if I had just touched ice. I turned back around to see Justin coming my way. After chewing on my lip and contemplating whether or not to go any further, I placed my whole foot in the water. It felt slightly warmer than the first time.
By this time, Justin was by my side, experiencing the coldness that I had just moments before. We waded slowly into the water, until we were up to our knees. Justin's baggy shorts were getting wet as we took a step back.
"You know what would really suck?" I questioned feeling a grin creep up on my face. Justin just stared back at me and shrugged his shoulders. "It would be really bad if someone fell all the way in the water. It's really cold." Justin nodded his head and placed his hands on my shoulders.
"You mean if someone were to push you in?" Justin smiled through his words. Before I could even think about what he said, I felt cold water rush over my entire body. The salty water sprinkled in my face when i dove in head first. I could now smell the slimy fish better, being coated in the scent.
"Justin!!!! You idiot!!! I'm soaked!!!!" I screamed after realizing what he had done. I just sat in the shallow water, shivering, and listening to the muffled laughter from the beach.
"I'm sorry Em....you asked for it." Justin said while laughing. He extended his hand out to me, in efforts to pull me up. Instead, I gripped his warm hand and yanked hard. He stumbled over and fell in the water. More laughter came from the shores of the beach, as Justin surfaced. "You are so dead..." Justin threatened. I got up and ran towards the beach. Justin was right on my tail as I ran behind JC trying to hide.
"Emily!! Get off of me!! You're wet!!" JC screamed in my face while pushing me right in Justin's arms. Deanna began covering her head using JC's arms.
Justin pulled me to him and turned me so I was facing towards him.
"Since you were bad, you gotta face your penalty." Justin declared.
"Oooo. I'm so scared." I remarked sarcastically. Before anything else, escaped my mouth, I felt cold lips being pressed to mine. I returned the kiss and pulled away. Looking down at my wet clothes, I sighed. "You guys...we better get back. Justin and I need to get some dry clothes." I directed my request towards Deanna and JC who were preoccupied with each other. The quickly pulled apart and nodded. We reloaded the bike and made our way back to the place where we had originally rented the bikes.
Shopping -- Emily POV
After wandering through the small shopping place on the pier, Justin and I came out looking like some very strange tourists. Any item of clothing we were wearing either said ‘Navy Pier' or ‘Chicago' on them. My hair was dripping all over the shirt as I shivered from still being cold. Deanna would not let up on comments about my new clothes. I made a mental note to get her back. We made a quick stop for a small lunch snack at McDonalds, which was right in the shopping center. It was designed like a futurama type McDonalds that had space things up. It was hard for us to get Deanna to stop chanting "Armageddon!".
The four of us had also found one of those photo booths. Making fools of ourselves, the four of us crammed into one little booths and made funny faces throughout the entire picture session. The first one was mostly the back's of our heads or our butts because we were fixing the sea height. We could not keep from laughing.
We emerged from shopping and glanced around in the sunlight. Turning to my left, I spotted the huge Ferris wheel that Navy Pier was famous for. I pulled towards the ride as quickly as I could, stopping in front of the ticket booth.
"Oh no. We're not going on that thing. It's too high." JC whined while keeping an eye on the slow moving circle.
"Oh yes we are. Four tickets please." I muttered to JC then turning to the ticket person. I took the tickets from the lady and we walked over to the line. The four of us boarded the Ferris wheel about 10 minutes later, jumping on the bucket as it passed the loading dock. After getting situated, I looked around. You could hardly tell that it was moving, it was going so slow. I didn't care though, I wanted this to last as long as possible.
"It's so beautiful. JC look at all the boats on the lake!" Deanna revealed as we keep going higher. He nodded keeping a strong grip on the side of the bucket. I moved around, not being ale to sit still. " You are such a dork. You went sailing over millions of girls though you can't keep your stomach in place for a ferris wheel."
"Don't....Rock....Please..."JC squeaked as I shifted back to my normal sitting position. Justin placed his hands on my shoulders to keep my in one spot. I laid my head on him as the ride kept going. The whole ride was 7 minutes long, yet it seemed like 20 seconds. The next thing I knew, the 4 of us were jumping off onto the loading dock and walking away.
"Now JC that wasn't so bad was it?" Justin coaxed patting him on the back.
"Yea. No sweat." JC breathed, shrugging his shoulders.
The rest of the day was a blur. We walked around the pier some more and found a boat tour that interested us. Finally, as it was starting to get dark, we made our way back to the car. We drove up and down Michigan avenue and looked for a nice place to eat. After enjoying a full meal at Little Italy we resided back to the car. I finally pulled up at Deanna's house at 1 in the morning wiped out. That was certainly a great way to spend our last day together. I didn't want to go to sleep for I knew that when 11 AM rolled around, JC and Justin would both be on a plane home, to Orlando.
