She could barely feel the rain on her anymore as she thought more and more about Vesteva. Abby didn't know what to think. She knew that Ves was unhappy, but counseling? Whatever happened, she knew she had to be there for her 100%. It was as if the sky had suddenly disappeared and the rain had totally stopped falling. Abby soon realized that there was a figure hovering over her, stopping the rain from reaching her already soaked blonde hair. She glanced up and met the pair of blue eyes again. Quickly pulling them away, she pushed herself up.
"You wanna come in my car?" the voice shouted over the sound of the road and the rain.
Abigail shook her head from side to side. There was no way she was going in that jerks car.
"Come on. At least its dry in there." He persuaded.
The two of them stood their with their arms crossed as Abby looked up at the man. Her arms were getting redder by the second so her options were beginning to shorten. It was either staying out there in the freezing cold, or sitting in this guys car, alone. After several attempts, Abby finally gave in. She slowly made her way to the guy's car, embarrassed that she was dripping all over his seat. She was scared that he would start yelling at her again about that. The two were silent until Abby reached over and turned on the radio.
"And now the new hit from *N Sync....Bye Bye Bye!!!" The DJ's voice rattled through the car. Abby grunted and switched the radio off, repositioning herself on the seat.
"Okay, bad idea. That song is way over played." Abigail exhaled.
"I don't even know your name." the man spoke trying to start a conversation.
Abby was shocked he was even talking to her. Did he have multiple personalities? She slightly giggled at her thoughts. The blue eyes stole a glance at her, so she quickly shut up.
"What's it to you?" Abby almost shouted at him.
She was still pissed about the way he acted earlier. Plus she just met him and he's probably already going to sue her because of the car wreck. She might as well watch her step before anything gets too serious. The guy looked at her angrily but quickly changed, stuttering on his next words.
"Look...I can see you're upset about before. Can't we put it aside? I was mad...this car is my pride and joy."
Abby shrugged, trying not to get involved in a conversation, but he kept trying.
"So where were you coming from?" He questioned. Abby decided to answer him, just so he could shut up.
"I was coming from American Eagle. I work there." The man nodded, but before he could say anything he was cut off by the honking of two tow trucks. Abby jumped out of the car before he could say anything else. The rain continued to pour as one of the tow truck guys met her half way between the guys car and a truck. After getting everything worked out with the man, she ran back to the car. Not sliding in, she opened the car door and spoke from there. Her clothes began to stick to her, wanting this to be over as soon as possible. Vesteva must have been so outraged at her right now, she didn't care about anything else.
"Can I use your phone? I got to call someone to pick me up." she questioned trying to sound hopeful.
"Not until you tell me your name." he smirked as he held out the blue compact phone and waved it around. Abby rolled her blue eyes and made one quick grab for the phone. She crawled in onto the passengers seat with her hands and knees, following the phone with her eyes as she reached. She didn't want to put a hand on him though, but thought about it a few times. After succeeding in getting the phone away from him she laughed. Abigail called her dad's number and got nothing but a bunch of rings. She slammed the phone shut and silently cursed under her breath.
"Just let me take you home. My friends should be here soon. I called them when I called the tow trucks."
"Thanks...I guess...," Abby nodded and slid back into the car. About two seconds after that she saw a black car pull off the road in front of them. "Is that your friends?" He nodded. The two of them ran to the other car in the rain, sliding into the back seats and quickly shut the doors. The guy began this whole thing with wild BLONDE curls, now they were pressed against his head.
"So you're the girl who smashed Justin's baby?" The blonde with a deep voice grinned through his words. Abby felt her cheeks grow hot and looked at the floor. 'Justin...so that was his name' Abigail thought to herself.
"You guys, don't give her a hard time. I already managed to do that." Justin conveyed. Abby told the brunette who was driving where she wanted to go and he looked at her funny as he raised an eyebrow. "You want to go there? We just came from there." He expressed.
"Yeah...well...my friend is there." Abigail found herself saying. She quickly scolded herself. She didn't want people asking her questions when she didn't even understand why her friend was going there. "If it's not too much trouble do you think you could take us home. You would just have to drop us off at my house. We kind of have no way home." The brunette smiled and nodded. The rest of the ride was silent. Abby tried to get herself a little tidy. She dripped all over the leather seats, same as Justin, while she tried to catch the water that sprung down her face.
Finally, the car pulled up to the half Children's hospital, half counseling center to where Vesteva was waiting. Abby glanced out the window to find Ves sitting in the pouring down rain in a crease in the building. 'Oh man.' she managed to get out before flinging the door open without letting the brunette have a decent stop. She skipped out of the car, almost being pulled back by the force of the car door swinging back.
As soon as Vesteva saw Abby jump out of the car she felt relieved. Finally something was going her way. She grabbed her soaking wet bag as she lifted her body from the cement. The weight from the rain that landed on her jeans and sweater made her feel heavier, using the wall behind her to help her up. Abby clenched close to her already freezing body, Vesteva noticing that she was already soaked. Instead of asking what the matter was, Abby yanked her by the arm and pulled her towards the car. It was then where her eyes fell upon the Jeep that had just left the parking lot less than a half an hour ago. She stopped in her tracks while Abby hopped into the car where Justin then opened the door for her. Abby waved for her to get in the car as she let in a deep sigh and continued in a lanky shuffle as she got in, squeezing Abby in the center. They pressed their tight, wet bodies together that gave them some body heat from their now below body temperatures.
"Why didn't you wait inside?" were the first words out of Abby's mouth when Vesteva slipped herself in the car.
Ves gave her a look that meant 'I'll explain later' and she shut her mouth. The three of them were crammed in the back seat with Abby's legs pressed up against Justin's. She couldn't shake the feeling that was running through her body. Vesteva sat there quietly as she looked in the rear view mirror to see the eyes that she saw earlier today. Her eyes dimmed as the thought of concentration built over her. Before she knew it, JC turned his head around quickly, trying to face her as much as he could.
" Weren't you the girl we met earlier? Vesteva, right?" JC asked, then turning quickly back at the road, watching through the window as the windshield wipers went rapidly back and forth.
Vesteva just nodded as she stared out her window where the wind was blowing the rain to the back. JC already knew the answer, he just wanted Vesteva to break her silence that she has held for so long. He saw how she was hiding from them as they pulled away the first time, and now the stillness from her on the trip home.
Abby quickly tried to think of something else that she could say, but nothing came to her mind. Eventually, the car made it to her house. Vesteva quickly got out of the car and ran to Abby's porch while Abby slowly got out. She started to run for the porch, but then turned back. Abby ran for the car and opened the door to the back seat where she just sat.
"The name's Abby, Justin. I'll be talking to you about paying for your car. See ya!" she said in all one breath. After slamming the door shut, she stood in the rain and watched the car leave.
Vesteva waited at the steps, bouncing her knees up and down from impatience as Abby came running up behind her slowly. She has a wide smile on her face while Vesteva just stood there with no expression, except that she was freezing and wanted to get inside. Abby lived on her own in a small one story house. It has two bedrooms, a living room that connected to the dining room, a kitchen and the bathroom. Her parents were very supportive throughout her decisions and helped with the payments for the rented house. Abby was a girl full of a lot of pride, doing what she wanted to do no matter what other people's opinions were. She wanted to go to school to become a lawyer, constructing fights for what she thinks is right. She unlocked the door as fast as she could and Vesteva went flying into the house. It was a Friday night so there was no worry about homework, no school to be scared of.
She put her completely wet tote bag on the counter in the kitchen, then dragging her feet she went to the bathroom, creating a path behind her of water. Abby went into the kitchen where there was the tile floor, grabbing a kitchen towel as she wiped of her face and her bare skin spots such as her arms.
" Abby? Can I barrow some clothes and maybe crash here tonight?" Vesteva yelled through the closed door.
She shouted back a positive answer, always having the door opened to her best friend. Abby saw the tote bag sitting there on the counter, sneaking her way over there while Vesteva tip toed into Abby's room to change into some dry clothes. Wanting to trust her friend, she tried to ignore it laying there. It was almost too impossible as the Velcro was ready to be pulled apart so it would open, while part of her notebook that she's always scribbling in stuck partly out. Before it was soaked, it was decorated with newspaper clippings, a collage of words that fit her best, along with pictures of people she adored. Abigail nibbled her bottom lip, clawing her fingers slowly at it, wanting to read what her friend is really feeling instead of some of the lies she tells to hide them.
Now the long nights and days off effort put into that notebook will be ruined from the rain. She's going to feel as if her feelings her washed away. Abby can just picture the pen running down the pages like icicles melting, words such as 'happy', 'hate', and her own name being mentioned in there. Vesteva must not have thought about the whole time or else she would have been on her knees crying, like her whole life was gone. Abby didn't want to be the one to advise that to her, have her find that out for herself. Though she still gaped at it with unknown answers.
Abby's body then shivered as Vesteva came out in a pair of cloud pajama bottoms with a gray sweatshirt. Her long hair was pulled back in a wet pony tail, draping over her right shoulder. Abby then came and ran into her room, slamming the door behind her with a laugh. Vesteva smirked a little, making her way to the couch that stood in front of the bay windows that showed the lightening strike behind the neighborhoods houses. She crept onto the couch, scooping herself together in a tight ball as she clasped her knees tightly.
" So you recognized those two guys in the front?" Abby then yelled, opening her door just a smudge so that her voice would be able to carry.
" They were the reason I was sitting in the rain." Ves snapped back. She bent over, grabbing a Seventeen magazine off of the table. Abby didn't reply until she came out of her room wearing her plaid baby blue pajama pants and jumping onto the recliner that bounced so the foot rest opened. She let out a large sigh and grabbed a cigarette out of the pack that was next to her and lit it up. Vesteva just gave a look over to her raising one eyebrow up, then continued searching through the magazine, as Abby blew smoke out of the new cigarette. " By the way, why were you so late? If you came on time I wouldn't have been sitting out there in the first place." she sniffed her nose.
Abby threw the lighter back onto the table," You know that blonde guy that I was sitting next to." She began while walking back over to the kitchen. " I was on my way to pick you up and I crashed into his car. Man, his attitude is terrible. I'm surprised he even suggested to give me a ride, and to pick you up. Speaking of him, you think I should call him right away about the damage? I don't know how I'm going to be able to pay him though, but the sooner the better I guess." Justin gave her his number earlier in the car.
Vesteva just shrugged her shoulders, either not knowing the answer or just not paying that much attention to what she was saying. In the magazine she was reading the page where it has little love stories such as, ' How he first said I Love You'. Jealousy always came over her though the thought of someone else being happy always entered her heart. She just wanted to share that same feeling one day, ' it just takes time', like everyone has been telling her. In her mind she believed that no one is going to share the same feelings, no one is going to understand her ways of being, or know what she has been through to become the person she is today.
After waiting a half an hour from sitting around, reading magazines and such, Vesteva could see Abby staring at the phone that was on the kitchen wall. She smelt the smoke coming over to her area. She always hated the scent but ever since Abby started around six months ago because of the problems with college, she's gotten use to it. Vesteva just rolled her eyes with a smile and watched as Abby got up. She went back into her room to search through her went pants to find the crumbled piece of paper with the pen ink that drooled down the paper. The numbers were there, just able to read if you squint hard enough. She went over to the phone and without hesitation dialed his number.
" Yeah, is this Justin?" she asked with a serious tone in her voice after all the dial tones.
" No, this is Joey but I can get him for you." the man said on the other line. She waited patiently as she hard the static as if he was pressing it against himself so the yelling of Justin's name couldn't be heard. It didn't help that much, Abby pulling her ear away from the phone with the large call.
" Hello?" he answered in his Southern accent, recalling that he wasn't anywhere from around Chicago.
" Yeah, this is Abby Imeron. I just want to get things straight with the payments for the car."
" Oh Abby, nice hearing from you so soon."
" I just seriously want to get this over with while I have the money for it. Now what would you estimate the damages would cost?" There was a short pause until Justin spoke up once again, " Girl, don't worry about it. It was an accident and I should have recognized that at the beginning."
"You were a total jerk but that shouldn't interfere with these payments for what I had done."
" Okay, thanks for that," he said hesitantly, then continuing, trying to schedule a date." I think it would be easier if we met in person to discuss this instead of doing it over the phone. I know of this restaurant at a hotel, probably the only restaurant so far. Can you meet tomorrow afternoon? We can settle everything there."
Abby couldn't resist the arrangement that he had set up, so she happily agreed, not objecting to the walk that she has to make to the hotel. After she accepted, the conversation ended with a quick hang up of the phone. Vesteva was still nestled on the couch in her rolled up position, trying to eaves drop on what was said on the phone, along with reading her articles. When she looked up from her magazine, Abby was making her way over to her, then drawing the curtains closed as the rain began to lighten up to a light drizzle. Vesteva was expecting come kind of smile to be spread across her face but the expression was as straight as a line. Her eyes were dark with concentration, making her way back to the kitchen. It was around five in the afternoon and the weather made it look as if it was ten at night.
" Hey Vessie, do you want to join me for a small dinner tomorrow?" Abby asked, pouring the packets of hot chocolate into each coffee cup.
" I wish I could join you but I have to baby sit most of tomorrow. It's what most of my life revolves around." She replied with a shrug of her shoulders.
There was a feeling inside of her wishing that she could go with, feeling as if she was important. Though socializing was not at the top of her list, prior commitments always came first. Abby let out a slight growl of anger now knowing that she has to eat with an argumentative man who has never heard of people other than himself. The microwave filled the room with the sound of it warming up, then going of with a ding. The two girls then sat there together in the dark room as they sipped their hot cocoa in wishes to become warm from their exciting afternoon.
