"Abby...can you please slow down? We have all day!!" Ves screamed at her, pulling her arm to slow her down. Abby whirled around, smiled, and then took off in the other direction. Sighing, the rest of the group reluctantly followed.
After about 2 hours, everyone decided to stop for something to eat in the food court. Abby hauled her numerous bags over to a table while Audra and Vesteva went to get everyone food. When they returned, Abby was sifting through her many purchases.
"So Ves, tell me all about this guy!" Abby chirped. Audra giggled and Ves turned bright red. Abby was happy that Ves was finally starting to open up. She was finally starting to realize that people were not the enemy. Abby was also thankful that Ves had decided to forgive her, after a grueling week of not talking.
"There's nothing really to say. We only went on one date!" Ves replied, still red from before. The girls continued to talk, filing Abby in with all the details. "Ok enough about me! Abby, ask Audra who she's still been talking to!" Ves requested.
"Audra, who have you still been talking to?" Abby mocked. Audra started laughing, and took a sip of her Sprite.
"Lance..." she said very quietly. Abby who was drinking a Dr. Pepper, almost choked. As Audra started to explain how they kept in touch over the months, Abby tried not to think about it. Just bringing it up, brought back all the memories of the night Justin blew up at her and changed her life. It was still hard for her to face the memories of her life before and the mistakes she made. After everything was finished, the girls threw out their garbage and took off to keep shopping. It was almost time for Abby check in at her dorm.
Justin was sitting with the rest of the group in full disguise, hiding in the corner of the food court. They had an autograph signing in about an hour, so they had some time to chill. Lance was distracted by a recent letter he was reading from Audra, while Chris and Joey were having their own conversation. Justin and JC were talking about what they were going to do after the signing tonight, since they had the night off. All of a sudden, a group of three girls came whizzing past their table, heading back into the mall. Justin whipped his head in their direction, swearing to himself that he had just seen Abby. "That's impossible, I haven't seen her in over two months." Justin said to himself.
"Hello? J?" JC was waving his hand in front of Justin's face. "What are you staring at?
"What? Huh? Oh nothing." It was nothing, Justin told himself. It wasn't her. It will never be her.
With full arms, Audra, Vesteva, and Abby made their way to the third floor of Harvard's freshman dorm. Struggling, Abby shoved the key in the door and kicked the door open with her foot. The three walked in on a dark haired girl laying on her bed, watching MTV. She glanced over and turned down the sound on the TV, as everyone dropped the boxes on the floor.
"You must be Kristin, I'm Abby. I'm going to be your room mate this semester." Abby introduced, walking over to shake Kristin's hand. She nodded, and with a warm smile, returned the hand shake. Abby introduced Vesteva and Audra and then she started to unpack all her stuff. Checking out the room, Abby was amazed at how big it was.
Everyone chipped in and finally after a couple hours, Abby had everything unpacked and placed in drawers. The girls glanced around at their work. Abby had pictures of everyone on her desk, baby blue sheets on her bed, and her clothes hanging up in her closet.
"So Kristin? What's there to do around her?" Abby asked, whipping her forehead.
"Well, we could go to a club, but I know I'm sure not up for it. How about a bar? There's plenty around here." she replied. Everyone agreed that they were too tired to go clubbing, so they decided on the bar. After fixing some make up and grabbing some money, the three headed out on campus, with Kristin leading the way.
It was only about a 10 minute walk, when they arrived in a smoky bar. Abby fought the urge to light up, but she controlled herself. She hadn't smoked once since that night and she was trying to stick to it. There were people playing basketball on a little arcade machine in the corner with lots of other people just standing around talking. Kristin ordered a pitcher of beer and the girls grabbed a table. Kristin found a few of her friends and introduced them to Abby.
"So you guys are all from Illinois? " One blonde asked. Ves nodded in response. They kept the talking going as more girls asked questions, getting to know each of them.
"I can't believe we are going to a Harvard bar! There's probably going to be equations and shit on the walls! No fun!!" Chris whined as they walked into the bar. They guys glanced around, checking out all the girls that were hanging around a table.
"Hey Chris...no equations.."Joey laughed. Chris just laughed as he went to order drinks for everyone. They decided just to sit at the bar, since all the tables were taken. Pouring everyone a glass of beer, they talked about their schedule for the next day. As Justin drank, he kept remembering the afternoon. He could not forget how much it had seemed like Abby. He had trouble concentrating at the autograph signing and he was zoning out now. What was wrong with him?
All of the sudden, he heard a girl laugh. It was way to familiar to ignore. Justin glanced over at the table of girls and couldn't believe what he saw. It was impossible, but he was seeing it with his own eyes. Abby, Audra, and Vesteva were sitting at the table laughing at something a girl he had never seen before had said.
"Yo JC!" Justin slapped JC's arm. "Look at that table over there...and tell me what you see." JC turned around to where Justin was pointing and sighed.
"I see a girl with dark hair, a girl with dirty blonde hair, a girl with really blonde hair and I see Vesteva." JC said then turned back to his drink. Within about 5 seconds, JC whipped back around towards the table. "That's Vesteva! Oh my gosh." Justin laughed at JC's delayed reaction, then showed Lance that Audra was over there.
"Come on JC, lets go talk to them." Lance urged already getting up, ready to go talk to Audra.
"No way. I can't go over there. Not after what I did. She doesn't want to see me. I guarantee that." JC said, and then turned so his back was towards the table, and joined the conversation with Chris.
"Justin?" Lance asked. Justin sighed and stood up. "I am not going to screw this up again. This is your last shot Timberlake. Make it count." Justin said to himself.
Abby was in the middle of telling a joke about a cat, when two guys came over to the table. Abby heard Audra gasp before she looked up. Audra had already gotten up and was hugging one of the guys. Abby let her eyes travel to the other, knowing who she was going to see. She saw the curls, she saw the blue eyes, and then she heard her name.
"Can we talk? Please?"Justin begged, as Abby's eyes grew wide. Ves kicked her in the leg and Abby stood up. Kristin looked confused as Lance and Audra went to another table to talk. Justin lent out his hand and Abby placed a shaky hand in it. Her heart was racing. Out of all the things she expected to find at Harvard, this definitely wasn't one of them. The two walked out of the loud environment and into the cold night air of Boston. As soon as they were outside, Justin tried to get everything he had been holding in, off his chest. "Abby, before you say anything, I just want to say I'm sorry. I'm sorry for everything I did, I'm sorry for yelling at you--"
"Justin...wait. Please don't be sorry. Everything I have now is because of you. I want to thank you for yelling at me. I know that may sound weird, but it's true. After that, my whole life changed. Do you even know why I'm here?" Justin shook his head, making his curls bounce. "I'm here, because I got my scholarship reinstated. I'm going to school here now. And it's all because of you...you got my life back on track. I don't know if there's ever going to be a way for me to repay you." The two stayed silent. Both of them were at a loss for words.
Audra and Lance sat down and immediately Audra started talking. " I can't believe you're here!! How come you didn't tell me you were going to be in Boston? Did you get my last letter? I missed you so much!!"
"Whoa whoa...slow down...we have all night!" Lance laughed. "Well first of all, I didn't tell you I was going to be in Boston because I didn't know you would be here in the first place. And yes," Lance replied, pulling a folded letter out of his pocket. "I got your letter." Audra laughed, then took a sip of her beer that she brought with her. The two talked for a little while about Lance's career, and Audra's life at school and how much they wished they could be together more often.
"Lance can I ask you something? I know this may sound funny, but do you like me because of the inside of me, or because of the outside? Because every guy I have ever been with has liked me because I'm a cheerleader, or that to them I look good. But what do you like me for?" Lance paused to take in the whole question that Audra was asking. Then when he was sure of his answer, he responded.
Grabbing her hands across the table, Lance said, "Audra, I like you because of everything about you. That night when I saw your boyfriend hit you, I wasn't worrying about what you were or how you looked on the outside. I was worrying about if you were okay on the inside. And when I got to know you, all I ever wanted was to know what you were feeling or how you would react to certain things I said. In a way, I'm a lot like you. It's hard to find a girl these days that really cares about who I am, and what I'm like on the inside. So I know exactly how you feel. And I hope that you like me for the inside as much as I like you for your inside. "
For the first time, Audra felt as if she had found the right person. Never again would she have to be scared of what was going to happen if things didn't go as planned. Lance leaned over the table and softly pressed his lips to hers, and finally Audra felt that spark that everyone talks about in the movies. Audra knew that he was the one and would always be the one.
Vesteva had been in a small conversation with Kristin and a couple of her friends for about 15 minutes after Abby had left with Justin and Audra had left with Lance. It hurt her inside to see JC sitting at the bar, pretending as if she wasn't there. She wondered if the reason he didn't want to come over was because he really didn't like her and didn't want anything to do with it. But as the way Abby had explained his reaction after she found out about the "deal", she couldn't believe that wasn't true. He wouldn't have been so upset if he didn't care about her. Then why wasn't he coming to talk to her. In a way she felt as if it were her fault, because she hadn't went to talk to him at the airport. Maybe he thought that she didn't want to talk to him. Finally, Vesteva decided to screw it. She had to make the first move. Vesteva excused herself from the table and went over to where he was sitting at the bar.
"You're an idiot." Vesteva whispered in his ear as she leaned up against the bar. JC whipped around not believing she was standing right next to him. He had been working up his courage to go talk to her, and now she was standing right here calling him an idiot.
"What?" JC choked out.
"I have been sitting over there for 15 minutes waiting for you to come talk to me. Justin came over, Lance came over, whisked my friends away, leaving me by myself, and you just sat here." Vesteva scolded.
"I...I...thought you wouldn't want to talk to me. Since you never came...I thought you hated me." JC mumbled, still not sure of what exactly to say.
"You're wrong." Vesteva told him, as JC became very confused. "I did come, I was about to go over to you and then a bunch of girls started screaming. I decided just to stay back and watch you." JC sat there with his mouth open, not believing what he was hearing.
"JC, Abby explained to me why you didn't want to go. Abby told me it was because you didn't want to get recognized and ruin the whole evening. I understand now where she was coming from, making that deal with you. I also understand that she made it because she just wanted me to have a good time." Vesteva paused, planning what she was going to say next.
"I really am sor–"
"Wait...let me finish. I want to thank you for giving me the best night of my life. Because of you, I've made friends. I even went out on my first date! Besides the one with you anyhow. You showed me that it's okay to be me and not to be scared anymore. I don't know what I would have ever done if you hadn't made that deal. JC I...I..." Vesteva couldn't get out the last words because JC had pressed his lips to hers in mid sentence. Sitting herself down, Vesteva wrapped her arms around JC's neck, deepening the kiss. She heard Chris and Joey whistling in the background, but she didn't care. It felt too right. Vesteva's life was finally perfect.
After a grueling silence of both Justin and Abby not knowing what to say, Abby finally decided to take the action into her own hands. Taking a deep breath she asked Justin a question.
"Hey Justin..." he looked up, not sure of what was coming next. "Do you like apples?" Justin started cracking up, not sure of why Abby would ask such a question. "I'm so serious...do you like apples? Justin stopped laughing.
"I guess so...I mean I like the red ones better than the green or yell–" Justin babbled before being cut off by Abby's lips. After the initial shock of what was happening, he bent down slightly and wrapped his arms around Abby's waist. Abby slowly pulled away, caught her breath, then said, "How do you like them apples?"
