She couldn't help but just sit there and stare at the two of them. That was until the brown hair guys bright blue eyes shot up, and she was out of the doorway like a bullet.
"I shouldn't be here," Vesteva said as she tapped her pencil against the wood top of her desk. She was trying to set aside her anger, looking around the room to the other teenagers that sat in there.
Her group counselor stood in confusion as she lifted an eyebrow, peering her eye directly at her in the distance. Ves crossed her legs and began to swing her leg impatiently, wanting to leave and get out. There was no reason that she should be there, she wanted to handle everything her own way. It isn't her that should be sitting here, but the people who criticize her. Vesteva was okay with he few friends that she had, and she always had her intelligence. Though if it wasn't for all the other outside peers, she would have been perfectly happy.
Staring at the ground for a second and then without moving her head, she wrinkled up her forehead, eyeing the counselor to see that mysterious blank eyes stare back at her. Depression was what everyone else in this room had, not her.
" Okay, that dismisses our meeting and we will meet again Sunday, same time." The counselor announced as she paced around the room, drumming the dry/erase marker in her hand.
Vesteva put her things away in her bag, along with the doodles that she scribbled on a sheet of paper that they handed out. Placing the bag over her shoulder she was the last one to leave the room, so she quickly hustled out of there before the teacher stopped her.
She turned the corner and approached the same room where she saw the two guys. Stopping suddenly before she went by, she pressed her body against the wall. Then she lightly lifted her head as she glanced in there, seeing the room completely empty. Letting out a sigh, she continued walking down the long hallway where she recognized the two guys, standing at the front desk.
Abigail was working in American Eagle when she glanced at her watch. She had to pick Vesteva up at 4:30 and time felt like it was going by so slowly. Her mind must have been somewhere else because her watch then read 4: 25. She quickly ran out of the store and out to her car. Well, so much for being on time to pick Ves up. It was a 15 minute drive from the mall where the store was to the place where Vesteva was. She quickly found her dark midnight Geo that she bought from her older brother, in the parking lot and rammed the key into the ignition.
She was driving for about 5 minutes when it happened. Sure Abby saw the cheery red vehicle in front of her. She must have misjudged the distance while stopping for a red light. The front of the old Geo slammed into the back of the car in front of her. Her body was thrown forward with the force and her air bag flew out in front of her face. She saw a wide peace sign on the back of the smashed car.
"Oh no. It was a Mercedes." She whispered out loud. After mumbling a few words under her breath, she slowly stepped out of her demolished car.
In front of her, she saw the car door open to the Mercedes. She silently prayed that whoever was driving wouldn't get mad. Unfortunately, it didn't work. The man walked over to her quickly and started shouting.
" What the fuck!" He screamed. She winced and took a step back from him.
"I'm sorry. I guess I didn't know I was so close." She squeaked. She tried not to make eye contact with him.
"You didn't know! How could you not know?" he rambled on and on. She put her head in her hands and tried to keep tears back. How could he be so mean? It was an accident.
"I told you I was sorry. It was an accident. Jeeze calm down. I'll pay for it." She managed to get out before a tear slipped down her cheek. She wiped it away quickly, not wanting him to see it. The man was already on his cell phone calling a tow truck or something. He turned to her.
"Do you know where we are?" he asked. She told him the intersection and he relayed the directions back to the guy on the phone. It surprised her that he didn't know the street that he was on. It was the busiest intersection in all of the outskirts of Chicago.
She glanced up at the man's face and for a second his eyes locked with hers. She pulled away quickly, but the image of his eyes stayed in her mind. She could still feel the tears welling up in her eyes, but she held them back. The man must have seen them ready to fall because he started talking to her again.
"Don't cry. Look I shouldn't have gotten upset. It's only a car." He tried to comfort. It made her mad that all she had to do was look sad and instantly he was nice to her.
"You are such a jerk. You know that?" Abby wailed at him. She couldn't stop her anger from seeping out of her body.
"I'm a jerk? You're the one that hit my car." he retaliated. The more he talked the madder she got.
"I said it was an accident. Gosh, you have to go and scream at me over a stupid car. Don't you know what a mistake is? Oh wait I forgot, you're Mr. I-Never-Made-A-Mistake-In-my-Life." Abby vented. She just wanted this day to end. Her words must have hit something because he walked back to his car, not even saying anything back.
She looked at the wrecked car that just sat there, now with no value while setting her hands on her hips. Pacing herself towards it she opened the door and squeezed her body over to the passengers side. In the glove compartment was her pack of cigarettes. She slid out holding the half empty pack. In her pocket was her lighter where she brought it out into her right hand.
Abby searched around for a place to sit because she couldn't sit in her car. Finally, she plopped down on the hard graveled road, hitting the pack against her hip. A cigarette plopped out and she settled the pack next to her while she lit one up. Raising the cigarette to her mouth, she sucked in as she lit the opposite end. The butt began to burn as Abby pulled it out of her mouth, blowing a fresh cloud of smoke into the air.
Justin gawked in disgust as the smoke filtered the area. He watched this beautiful girl inhale the cancer at every second. To himself he thought that it was such a turn off. Believing that no matter what, he would never be attracted to a smoker and right now he was obeying it. Her eyes turned dark with anger as her short blonde hair blew back behind her ears with the breeze of the wind. Clouds were beginning to disguise the sky, turning it a nice gray color.
Returning to his smashed car, he couldn't keep his eyes off of the girl who was full of pride.
Quickly in long lunges, Vesteva bolted across the large room where the front desk sat and a waiting area. She didn't want the one guy to notice her or approach her, asking why she was staring in the room. That was mostly because she didn't have an answer.
She ran through the first pair of glass doors and stood in the little room before exiting the other pair. Clouds began to cover the bright sun while it all turned a gray color among the parking lot. Drizzle started to scatter everywhere and Vesteva hoped that Abby would get there before it started raining cats and dogs. leaning up right next to the pay phone, Vesteva waited for the dark blue Geo to come pulling up in front any second now.
" Hey... you...," she heard the words call out as the dark hair man came into the little area, holding the door for his friend. The tone didn't sound rude like most of them directed to her were, people not calling her by her name. Though this was different, like a friendly expression.
She didn't dare speak a word though, while she ignored the words, having her brown eyes wondered aimlessly around, fidgeting with her bag, and her right knee couldn't stop bouncing. The blonde hair guy with the low voice was about to open the doors until he noticed the motion of rain pounding on the cement, then came right back in.
" Hey, I saw you earlier." Bright blue eyes came closer to her. She didn't know what to do, so stupidly as looked from side to side and then pointing her herself with a whisper of "Me?".
" Yeah you, who else would I be talking to. What's your name?" he curiously asked.
" Vesteva, Vesteva Hartner. And you are?" She was barely able to squeeze out.
" Vesteva? I've never heard that name before, it's beautiful. Well, I'm plain and simple JC, and that's Lance." He introduced the other man adding the compliment.
He started walking over in the two's direction as he lent out a hand to be shook. Vesteva took it happily, feeling like she was on cloud nine. All this attention was way too much for her as she began to squirm around, trying to walk her way around from their surroundings. She walked over to the glass doors where Abby's car wasn't in sight. She looked down at her watch and saw that it was ten after 4: 30 and there was no sign of her. How unusual since Abby was always prompt, on time for any event.
The guys followed her though spreading farther from her. " So what are you guys doing here?" Ves asked, though not being able to look either of them in the eyes.
" Long story. Let's just say we volunteered to come down here. We are only going to be in the area for a short time though. What about you?" JC answered.
Vesteva didn't want to tell them the truth about why she was there, it would be too mortifying. How did she know that they weren't going to laugh in her face? She hardly knew them, all she knew were their names mostly.
" Oh, same thing." She spit out. " Oh look, my friend is here to pick me up. Well, I'll see you guys later!" Vesteva lied as she walked out into the pouring rain.
Pulling her hands into her sweater sleeves she then crossed her arms as she walked a couple feet over so that the guys didn't have her in their view. The rain dribbled down her face, making her long hair flat and frizz up. She leaned up against the building, sinking slowly to the ground. Not caring that she might be settling herself in a puddle, she then fell and met with the ground. Vesteva took her tote bag and brought it closely to her chest, almost forgetting that her notebook was in there and some school work.
She saw the guys run out to the parking lot to their car. JC digging in his pocket and looking at his key chain, trying to pick out the car key. He then slipped into the car first, then followed by Lance. The guys pulled out slowly in the rain. Vesteva put her head to the side as she tried to bury her face from their view. The guys then happened to turn the car that way.
JC sat there, just a tad bit soaked as he looked at Vesteva, sitting there, draped with water as he watched it tumbled off her freezing hands. He stopped the car right in front of her, not knowing what to do. She did lie then to escape the two of them, so why should he volunteer to take her home?
" Are you going to ask her to join us?" Lance impatiently asked, looking out JC's window and seeing her sitting there.
JC couldn't help but stare at her. If he was in her situation he would be asking for a ride, especially since they stopped right in front of her. There was something different though about her, something that she was hiding. He knew it ever since he saw her peering into the room when they were reading. Without answering Lance he pressed the button to make the window roll down.
" Do you want a ride?!" he shouted out the window, the sound of rain almost over powering him.
Vesteva just sat there in amazement that he is actually caring like this.
" I'm fine, go home!" She shouted back.
She sat there in the rain as she watched the Jeep drive away.
