She gave a squeeze of JC's hand as they made there way over to an empty table that is set for eight people. Couples were all over the dance floor, dancing already with the DJ up at the front pumping the music out. People were standing around talking with their dates, some who didn't have any though joined in with the crowds. Dresses ranged from dozens of colors though the same black suit on the guys showered the room.
In his mind, JC was hoping that no one would recognize him or even play one of their songs tonight. He wanted to be normal for one day, pretend that his fame was all pushed behind him and have a blast with a girl that he liked. It felt strange for him to be back in high school from a long five year break of school. He can imagine himself running laps around the gym, having the coach yell at him to speed it up and use the arms. Laughing to himself, Vesteva crunched low in a ball having her face almost buried in her lap. The curls from her hair bounced up and down from her steady breathing.
Wanting to see those eyes that he saw earlier in the night, JC tried sneaking his hand into hers so that she would know that he cares. Her hands were hiding her face, buried between her face and her lap. A slow song popped on as each couple separated among the dance floor. It was the theme song to Armageddon, " I Don't Want to Miss A Thing". Vesteva's face brushed up, lifting it slowly to wince up at the people dancing to her favorite song to one of her all time favorite movies. How she wanted to be in someone's arms who she really felt connected to so she could know what this song is really about. The words are what she wants in a relationship, though she's never even had a boyfriend before.
On her light purple dress on her lap, a couple dark spots laid there from her soft, silent cry. " Would you like to dance?" JC slipped the words out of his mouth. Standing up, he walked to the side of her and offered his hand out.
Surprise and shocked, she looked up and could see his face in a spotlight with the lightly dimmed lights bringing out his best features. She delicately tapped the tips of her fingers into the palm of his hand, letting it slide in by itself. She sat up from her seat, leading her to a corner on the dance floor. Going into the usual dance position with her hand on his shoulder and the other in his hand, he conducted her to small steps, barely moving from their position. Her head just went a slight bit above his shoulders so she stared over them.
Feeling the sense of security for once, loosening her tense feelings she let him have full attention. Vesteva felt like she was average, the same as everyone else for that small moment. Having no fears of what was happening around her surrounding, she didn't think about the past or about the future, she just cared about what was happening then. Thinking, what a predicament being in this spot at this very second. It was only her dream less than two hours ago and now it was all coming true, what she has dreamed for her entire life. To have someone hold her, to look into his eyes and know that what she was feeling was the exact same thing that he felt in his heart, too.
Bringing him closer she placed her hands around his neck and gathered her face by his ear. He for once followed her lead and wrapped his arms around her body, placing them on her cold bare back. Running her fingers through his short dark hair, she felt great as the words of the song passed through her ears. The chorus came and she sang the words beneath her breath though audible for JC to listen to it. Her curls flushed his cheeks as he breathed in the smell of fresh flowers with a soft touch against his skin. Closing her eyes, she inhaled this moment wishing it would never end.
Lance put the phone back in it's cradle and got up off the couch. He sighed as he bent down to put his shoes on. He was always doing these things for Justin and the rest of the group for that matter. Grabbing the keys to the Jeep off the counter, he set off for the door. He was almost out the door until he turned back and grabbed the directions Justin had given to him.
Lance slipped into the Jeep and pulled out of the drive way. After about 5 min, he flipped on the radio to get rid of the silence that was taking over the car. BBMak's Back Here filled the car. Lance chuckled to himself to hear their accents slightly in the song. He glanced down to the scribble on the Post-It note and switched into the left lane. After about 15 minutes, Lance pulled up to Abby's house to find Justin with his head in his hands. He reached for the door handle and slowly pushed himself out of the car.
Sitting down next to Justin, he softly touched Justin's shoulder making him glance up for the first time. Justin's face was a mix of anger and sadness, almost impossible for Lance to read what he was feeling. After about a minute of silence, Lance cleared his throat and spoke.
"Hey Justin. Let's go home. You can talk to me about it in the car." Lance's deep voice comforted. Justin nodded and got up off the step. They both made their way to the car in silence. They strapped on their seat belts and pulled out of Abby's driveway. Justin stole a glance at Abby's small house for the last time because he knew he would never see it again.
The song was just near to ending when Vesteva spotted a couple coming through the doors. Eric walked in with Audra's hand cuffed around his arm. Ves's heart felt like shattering into a million pieces but she held herself tall. In her arms was a great guy that was making this night wonderful. They walked over towards Caylin and that's when she heard her name being called. Startled, she jumped from JC's arms and backed up away from him. Placing her hand on the side of her neck, she began to rub it so she didn't seem so noticeable.
The calling continued from Caylin and Audra's table, steps away from where they were dancing. Feeling like all eyes were on her, she couldn't back down or else they could destroy her. Walking over regularly to their command, she braced her shoulders back and walked over there with confidence for once.
Audra sat back with her arms crossed with a very disturbed look on her face while Eric has his arm around the chair. Caylin sat there with her blonde hair straight down to her shoulders with her black roots showing an inch down. A grin was plastered from ear to ear as Vesteva approached the over packed table. People gathered around who weren't there at the beginning, either mingling or just standing around, waiting for something to happen. Standing diagonal to Caylin sitting, Ves shuffled around near the rim of the table.
Listening closely behind her, she felt the touch of someone beginning to pull her arm but she shrugged it off, knowing it's JC. This was her own battle, and she didn't want to run away from it this time like always. JC moved a few feet back from her, letting her have her space as the Ahh's of the end of the song filtered the room.
Caylin had something placed in front of her spot on the table, keeping her hands tightly on it. The way that Vesteva was standing from her didn't let light travel to see what the object was. " Hey Ves, how have you been lately?" Caylin asked, leaning forward and placing her chin on the back of her hand.
" I have been fine, and you?" she answered back with a crack in her voice.
" Well, I've been better ever since I ran into you in the hallway." Vesteva furrowed her eyebrows, having no clue at to what she was talking about. Her hands were cuffed together, placed down in front of her nervously bouncing them against her legs. She stared around the table, everyone having their full attention on Caylin. When all was silent for a second, Audra excused herself from the table promptly creating a scene as everyone's attention switched. Vesteva just pushed her head out slowly, she knew that Caylin had more to add to that. " You know, I was looking through my books and I found this one that grabbed my attention. And there was an inscription on it... wait... let me read it to you..." Caylin began as she cleared her throat, " Dedicated to Vesteva Hartner, From Dr. Karen. I wish the best and hope that this book helps."
With a devilish grin, she closed the book and slid it over to where Vesteva stood, landing straight in front of her. The title glared right into her eyes 'You're Not Alone', and she knew now that she was ruined. Her secret has been let loose and is now known by her worst enemies. As she stared at the book, everyone around her began to laugh and giggle. Forgetting all about JC behind her, she didn't realize that he heard the whole thing.
Her eyes didn't leave the book, her body didn't unfreeze. She could only stand there as everyone pointed and gasped. She took it all in and couldn't believe what was actually happening. Everything was going great and she felt like she was actually special. Sure she was special, because she was the laughing stock of the entire dance.
" You know, we all go a little bit... mad sometimes..." Caylin slipped out as she rolled her tongue around her lips, knowing that she did a job well done.
Vesteva looked up from the book, seeing all the faces of people smiling and hearing the terrible noises that she tried to block every day. Her name being called in unmentionable ways, that she just covered her ears to try to block out the horror. Wanting to sink to her knees, she knew that she couldn't do that in such a large crowd, showing her inferiority to the others. Glancing over to where Eric was sitting, she saw the smile on his face knowing that he's just like the others. Then, smacking the book off of the table to get it out of her sight, she closed her eyes tightly and screamed and growled, " What.... have I EVER done to you?!".
People began to calm down at that point, wanting to listen to Caylin's response, " You are here, aren't you?".
Shaking her head back and forth, Vesteva made a run for the doors. JC tried catching her in his arms before she got past him but she broke away, flinging her arms in certain directions while trying to cover up her crying. Her breathing became unregular as she held in all the pain, she gasped out from breaths of air as she ran through the gym, wiping past people's bodies and not caring who she pushed.
Abby finally lifted her head off of her tear soaked pillow. Justin's words were replaying over and over in her head. She couldn't get the sound of his voice to stop ringing in her ears or get the picture of his face written with rage out of her vision. She clenched and unclenched her hands trying to relive the stress she was putting herself through. No wait, that Justin was putting her through. After about 5 more seconds, Abby groaned and threw her pillow across the room. Her whole body was starting to shake.
"I need to calm down." she thought out loud. "I need something to calm me down. A cigarette!" She screamed to no one. Running out of her room, she grabbed an open pack sitting on a desk. As soon as she picked one up though, the only thing she saw was Justin.
"And what's with the smoking? You're an honors student, you have to know the dangers that it causes. Even a kid in 1st grade knows it's horrible for you." Justin voice rang out through her conscience. Abby muttered loudly and crushed the cigarette in one hand. Then with one swipe, the rest of the pack fell into the garbage can below the desk. Abigail then collapsed into a fit of sobs.
"What is wrong with me? What did I do to my life?" she sobbed, trying to get her mind to obey her heart.
Walking through the halls of deafening quiet, JC lost himself in the mess of entrances, not knowing where he was heading. Leaving was a thought that crossed his mind, he felt out of place from what had just happened. His shoes tapped along the white tiled floor, with his eyes opened wide around every corner. His hands got cold and the time was going by slowly. Suddenly he felt a hand on his shoulder and whipped around to find himself staring into a pair of green eyes. He saw a familiar face and blonde hair, but never had caught the girl's name.
"You're Vesteva's date right?" she said softly. JC nodded, glancing down the hall way. The girl extended her hand and JC timidly took it. "I'm Audra. And you're...JC."
"How...how...how did you know that?" JC stuttered. He never recalled telling anyone his name, except for Abby and of course Vesteva.
"Oh come on. It's not like I don't watch MTV JC. But don't worry, I won't make a big scene. I'm just trying to help you find Vesteva. She's probably over here. Come on."
JC and Audra took off towards an exit, Audra's heels clicking against the tile floor. As soon as they stepped outside, JC heard faint sobs coming from around the corner of the school. The two quietly walked towards the sound and saw Ves curled up in a ball, on the pavement. Audra quickly squatted next to her, placing her hand on Vesteva's quivering shoulders. She glanced up, mascara streaming down her cheeks. As soon as she saw Audra she squirmed to her feet and started walking away.
"Wait! I'm Abby's friend. I'm not going to hurt you." Audra cried. Vesteva stopped and turned around seeing Audra and JC apologetic looks. Before either of them could say anything, a bunch of people burst out of the entrance, giggling.
"Did you see the look on her face? That was a classic!" A familiar voice laughed, as Vesteva recalled the voice belonged to Eric. The group came around the corner and saw the three of them standing there.
"Aww...look Eric. We made her cry." Caylin taunted, pointing to Vesteva. Eric flashed her a look of death, then directed his eyes towards Audra. Walking over to her, he grabbed her arm, pulling her back to him. Caylin then glanced over to JC who was slowly making his way over to a sobbing Vesteva. Slipping his arm around her waist, he pulled her close, giving her a shoulder to cry on for once.
"Why can't you just leave her alone?" JC croaked, his voice dry from not speaking. Caylin just cocked her head back and burst out laughing.
"And who are you? Her boyfriend? What's a famous person like you doing at a high school Homecoming, with this loser?" Caylin surged. "Hey Bianca. Go alert everyone that JC Chasez from *NSYNC is here." A girl with short brown hair ran back into the school, following a direct order. Vesteva glanced up at JC with confusion written all over her face. Within a few seconds, screams arose from inside and burst out into the night. Audra shot JC a regretful look, while he grabbed Ves's hand and tore off towards where the limo was waiting.
